There&rsquo;s a common perception that computer science and engineering careers&nbsp;are a better&nbsp;fit for boys. Even hit TV shows like The Big Bang Theory&nbsp;somewhat peddle the same belief.&nbsp;&nbsp;
But stereotypes about what young kids should or shouldn&rsquo;t like have&nbsp;a bigger impact on their adult life than we realise. In fact, the notion that boys are more interested&nbsp;in computer science may be the reason why girls and women are underrepresented in STEM career fields, says a new study.

A survey of nearly 2,500 students&nbsp;found that&nbsp;63 per cent of students believed girls were less interested in engineering than boys while 9 per cent think girls were not interested at all.
Published in the PNAS journal, the findings show&nbsp;that&nbsp;interest stereotypes were also linked to worse outcomes for girls. The&nbsp;stereotypes about girls&rsquo; disinterest in STEM fields lessens their motivation and sense of belonging in these fields whereas the opposite was true for boys.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Some may also ask that what if the stereotype is true? But scientists say the current belief system creates a vicious cycle, making it hard to gauge actual interests.&nbsp;
This is why it is important for parents, teachers and other stakeholders to promote the message that girls can enjoy STEM just as much as boys do, which will help draw them into STEM activities.

The centenarian woman has scored 89 out 100 marks in an exam conducted by the state government's continuing education initiative.
Kerala's Education Minister Vasudevan Sivankutty posted a picture of 104-year-old Kuttiyamma on social media to wish her on the feat.
"104-year-old Kuttiyamma from Kottayam has scored 89/100 in the Kerala State Literacy Mission's test. Age is no barrier to enter the world of knowledge. With utmost respect and love, I wish Kuttiyamma and all other new learners the best," he tweeted, along with the picture of a beaming Kuttiyamma.
Reports said that Kuttiyamma had never received any formal school education. Although she could read, Kuttiyamma did not know how to write. Because of the state govt's literacy programme, she learned writing as well. The classes were held every morning and evening at her home. After attending the classes, Kuttiyamma became eligible to take the exam for fourth standard.
The Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority aims to promote literacy, continuing education and lifelong learning for all citizens. Currently, it provides equivalency programs for 4th, 7th, 10th, 11th and 12th standards.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia&nbsp;in a high level meeting called by the Ministry of Education said that conducting 12th board examinations before vaccinating students can be a big mistake.
The boards were postponed in view of the second wave of the covid crisis.
