Iran's army has so far found no evidence of criminal activity in a helicopter crash that killed the country's president Ebrahim Raisi and seven others, state media reported.
The 63-year-old died on Sunday after his helicopter went down in the country's mountainous northwest while returning from a dam inauguration on the border with Azerbaijan.
"No bullet holes or similar impacts were observed on the helicopter wreckage," said a preliminary report by the general staff of the armed forces published by the official IRNA news agency late Thursday.
"The helicopter caught fire after hitting an elevated area," it said, adding that "no suspicious content was observed during the communications between the watch tower and the flight crew."
Raisi's helicopter had been flying on a "pre-planned route and did not leave the designated flight path" before the crash.
The report said the wreckage of the helicopter had been found by Iranian drones early on Monday but the "complexity of the area, fog and low temperature" hindered the work of search and rescue teams.
The army said "more time is needed" to investigate the crash and that it would announce more details later.

Among the people killed in the incident was foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian who was also buried on Thursday in the town of Shahre Ray south of the capital.

He is the one who decides the direction of foreign policy. Iran&rsquo;s constitution dictates that the Supreme Leader be appointed by the Assembly of Experts comprising 88 members. The assembly supervises and can also sack the Supreme Leader but only in theory.
The final decision in all matters of state rests with the Supreme Leader&rsquo;s office and only two men have held the position since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
With Khamenei health declining, he has not endorsed anyone, and with Raisi no more, the path has been cleared for Mojtaba Khamanei as there is no other candidate so far.

Born on September 8, 1969, Sayyid Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei is the second son of the present Supreme Leader of Iran.The 54-year-old has served in the war of Iran and Iraq from 1987 to 1988. In 1999, he continued his studies in Qom to become a cleric.Presently, Mojtaba teaches theology in the Qom seminary.
Although Mojtaba does not have any active public profile, he has played quite active roles in the Supreme Leader&rsquo;s office.

Huge crowds of Iranians thronged the streets of the capital Tehran on Wednesday for the funeral procession of president Ebrahim Raisi and his entourage, who died in a helicopter crash.
In the city centre, mourners clutching portraits of Raisi gathered in and around the University of Tehran, where Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, led the prayers.
Flanked by top officials, Khamenei said prayers over the coffins of the dead, who also included Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
The leader of Palestinian militant group Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, joined the procession, as did the deputy leader of Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, Naim Qassem.
"I say once again... we are sure that the Islamic Republic of Iran will continue its support for the Palestinian people," Haniyeh told the crowd to chants of "Death to Israel".
Raisi's helicopter crashed into a fog-shrouded mountainside in northwestern Iran on Sunday as he headed back to the city of Tabriz after attending a ceremony on the border with Azerbaijan.
A huge search and rescue operation was launched, involving help from Turkey, Russia and the European Union. State television announced Raisi's death early on Monday.
Raisi, who was widely expected to succeed Khamenei as supreme leader, was 63.
In the capital, huge banners have gone up hailing the late president as "the martyr of service", while others bade "farewell to the servant of the disadvantaged".
Tehran residents received phone messages urging them to "attend the funeral of the martyr of service".
From the university, the coffins will be driven to the huge Enghelab Square in the city centre and on to Azadi Square, state media said.
<h3>Burial in Mashhad</h3>
Funeral rites for Raisi and his entourage began on Tuesday with processions through Tabriz and the Shiite clerical centre of Qom drawing tens of thousands of black-clad mourners.
From Tehran, the bodies will be taken to Iran's second city of Mashhad, Raisi's hometown in the northeast, where he will be buried on Thursday evening after funeral rites at the Imam Reza shrine.
Khamenei, who wields ultimate authority in Iran, has declared five days of national mourning and assigned vice president Mohammad Mokhber, 68, as caretaker president until a June 28 election for Raisi's successor.
Iran's top nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri, who was Amir-Abdollahian's deputy, has been named acting foreign minister.
The country's armed forces chief of staff Mohammad Bagheri has ordered an investigation into the cause of the helicopter crash.
Raisi was elected president in 2021, succeeding the moderate Hassan Rouhani at a time when the economy was battered by US sanctions imposed over Iran's nuclear activities.
The ultra-conservative's time in office saw mass protests, a deepening economic crisis and unprecedented armed exchanges with arch-enemy Israel.
After his death, global allies Russia and China sent their condolences, as did NATO, while the UN Security Council observed a minute's silence.
Messages of condolence also flooded in from Iran's allies around the region, including the Syrian government as well as Hamas and Hezbollah.

Condolences are pouring in after the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, killed in a helicopter crash in a remote and fog-shrouded western mountain region on Sunday, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
However, not everyone in Iran is mourning for the hardline cleric-turned-president, who was accused of several crimes against humanity.
<h3>Early life&nbsp;</h3>
Raisi studied theology and Islamic jurisprudence under the now Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and was part of protests against the US-backed monarchy, that was eventually toppled by the Islamic revolution in 1979.
Aged just 20, he started his judicial career in the the newly formed Islamic Republic.&nbsp;
<h3>Mass executions</h3>
As the deputy prosecutor of Tehran in 1988, he was part of a tribunal that presided over secret re-trials of thousands of political prisoners. Most of them were part of opposition leftist groups like the People's Mujahedin Organisation of Iran, and were sentenced to death. According to human rights groups, about 5,000 men and women were executed and buried in unmarked mass graves.&nbsp;
Raisi repeatedly denied his role in what has come to be known as the "Death Committee". But, for Iran's exiled opposition, his name is a reminder of the mass executions.
<h3>Human rights violations</h3>
As the deputy chief of the Judicial Authority, he was involved in the violent crackdown on the "Green Movement" against the disputed presidential election in 2009. Raisi was uncompromising in confronting protesters rallying against populist president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's second term.
He was put on Washington's sanctions blacklist for complicity in "serious human rights violations" -- charges rejected as null and void by the authorities in Tehran.
<h3>Presidential bid</h3>
After an unsuccessful attempt in 2017, Raisi defeated moderate predecessor Hassan Rouhani in the 2021 presidential election. But, more than half the electorate boycotted the polls after prominent moderate and reformist candidates were barred from contesting.
What followed were turbulent years of protests and tensions.
<h3>Hijab protests</h3>
In September 2022, Iran was on the boil, following the death in custody of Mahsa Amini. She was detained by Tehran's morality police for wearing her hijab "improperly," and according to a UN fact-finding mission, subjected to "physical violence that led to her death."
The death of the young woman sparked the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement demanding the end of clerical rule.
Raisi suppressed the movement with force, killing over 550 protesters, and detaining 20,000 others. According to the UN, nine young male protesters were executed based on confessions made under torture.
Despite stricter hijab laws and repeated crackdowns, discontent against the clerical establishment is widespread. A large part of the resentment was directed at Raisi.
Always dressed in a black turban and religious robe, Raisi was known to be pious. Like other ultraconservatives, he harshly criticised United States' unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear pact in 2018 and the punishing sanctions that followed. The late President was a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause, and backed tit-for-tat escalations that led to Tehran's direct attack on Israel last month.
But for many in Iran, and those exiled, Raisi represented mass executions and a brutal crackdown on dissent.

The Iranian president, the country's foreign minister and several other officials were found dead on Monday, hours after their helicopter crashed in a foggy, mountainous region of the country's northwest, Iran state media reported.
A home ministry spokesperson said Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Hossein Amit-Abdollahian, the country's foreign minister, passed away in a helicopter crash.
"As a mark of respect to the departed dignitaries, the government of India has decided that there will be one day's state mourning on May 21 (Tuesday) throughout India," the spokesperson said.
"On the day of mourning, the national flag will be flown at half-mast throughout India on all buildings where the national flag is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment on the day," the official added.
