A tear gas shell-dropping drone system has been developed by the Border Security Force (BSF) that can be used by police for controlling protesters and rioters, a senior officer of the border-guarding force said on Friday.
He said the &ldquo;drone tear smoke launcher&rdquo; can be used for launching these shells from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or drone and it &ldquo;will be a potential force multiplier for the security forces working in the law-and-order management domain&rdquo;.
A BSF spokesperson said the new system was tested recently at its famed tear smoke unit (TSU) in Tekanpur, Madhya Pradesh and this was informed at the annual governing body meeting of the special unit held in Delhi under the chairmanship of BSF Director General (DG) Pankaj Kumar Singh.

The TSU was established under the BSF in 1976 and it develops and manufactures anti-riot tear smoke munitions for supply to both central and state police forces. The BSF is primarily deployed to guard the Indian borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh, besides playing a variety of roles in the country&rsquo;s internal security domain.
A video clip shared by the force showed at least six tear smoke shells placed tightly in a metal cage fixed under a hexacopter drone. The drone system drops the tear shells from the air at designated spots.
During the meeting, the BSF DG praised the TSU for bringing out a variety of non-lethal munitions for police and security forces as he said &ldquo;indigenous production of these items has reduced the country&rsquo;s dependence on foreign munitions&rdquo;.
The TSU also produces a variety of other lachrymatory munitions, flash-bang shells, impact munitions and customised products for special operations, the BSF spokesperson said.&nbsp;

Taiwan's forces said in a statement that troops took the action on Tuesday after drones were found hovering over the Kinmen island group. Dadan, one of the islands where a drone was spotted, lies roughly 15 kilometres (9 miles) off the Chinese coast.
The statement Wednesday referred to the unmanned aerial vehicles as being of &ldquo;civilian use," but gave no other details.
It said the drones returned to the nearby Chinese city of Xiamen after the shots were fired. Taiwan previously fired only flares as warnings.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions after China fired missiles into the sea and sent planes and ships across the dividing line in the Taiwan Strait earlier this month.
It followed angry rhetoric from Beijing over a trip to Taiwan by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the highest-ranking US dignitary to visit the island in 25 years.
China claims Taiwan as its own territory and its recent actions have been viewed as a rehearsal of a possible blockade or invasion.
China's drills brought strong condemnation from Taiwan's chief ally, the US, along with fellow regional democracies such as Australia and Japan. Some of China's missiles early in August fell into nearby Japan's exclusive economic zone.
Taiwan maintains control over a range of islands in the Kinmen and Matsu groups in the Taiwan Strait, a relic of the effort by Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists to maintain a foothold on the mainland after being driven out by Mao Zedong's Communists amid civil war in 1949.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry said China's actions failed to intimidate the island's 23 million people, saying they had only hardened support for the armed forces and the status quo of de-facto independence.

Officials said anti-drone defences were being strengthened, part of a 12.9 per cent increase in the Defense Ministry's annual budget next year. The government is planning to spend an additional 47.5 billion New Taiwan dollars (USD 1.6 billion), for a total of 415.1 billion NTD (USD 13.8 billion) for the year.
The US is also reportedly preparing to approve a USD 1.1 billion defence package for Taiwan that would include anti-ship and air-to-air missiles to be used to repel potential Chinese invasion attempts.
Following the Chinese drills, the US sailed two warships through the Taiwan Strait, which China has sought to designate as its sovereign waters. Foreign delegations from the US, Japan and European nations have continued to arrive to lend Taipei diplomatic and economic support.
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey is currently visiting Taiwan to discuss the production of semiconductors, the critical chips that are used in everyday electronics and have become a battleground in the technology competition between the US and China.
Ducey is seeking to woo suppliers for the new USD 12 billion Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (TSMC) plant being built in his state.
The governor is also visiting tech powerhouse South Korea, and in a statement on his official website said his aim was to take these relationships to the next level - to strengthen them, expand them and ensure they remain mutually beneficial.&rdquo; Last week, the Indiana governor visited Taiwan on a similar mission.
Taiwanese Air Force pilots have also trained at Luke Air Force Base outside Phoenix for more than 25 years, an indication of continuing US support for Taiwan's defence despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties.
Taiwan produces more than half the global supply of high-end processor chips. China's firing of missiles during its exercises disrupted shipping and air traffic and highlighted the possibility that chip exports might be interrupted.
Reacting to Ducey's visit, China on Wednesday reaffirmed its opposition to any official contacts between the US and Taiwan.
That was a further reminder of the Communist Party's refusal to acknowledge the separation of powers within the US government and the right of American local officials to operate independently of the administration.
&ldquo;We urge the relevant parties in the US to ... stop any forms of official contacts with Taiwan, and refrain from sending wrong signals to the Taiwan independence forces," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said at a daily briefing.
&ldquo;China will take strong measures to resolutely safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity," Zhao said.

Drone corridors will be developed for cargo deliveries and the coverage of drones under Drone Rules 2021 has increased from 300 kilograms to 500 kilograms to include drone-taxis too.
The interactive airspace map with green, yellow, and red zones will be displayed on the digital sky platform.
There will be no restriction on foreign ownership in Indian drone companies and the maximum penalty under Drone Rules, 2021 has been reduced to ₹ one lakh.
All drone training and examination to be carried out by an authorised drone school. Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) shall prescribe training requirements, oversee drone schools and provide pilot licences online.
The new rules are believed to have been designed to usher in an era of super-normal growth while balancing safety and security considerations.

In first such terror attack using unmanned aerial vehicles, between 1.37 am and 1.42 am on Sunday, most reports say, two drone-laden explosives went off inside the high security area sending the defence establishment in to tizzy.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
With most reports saying that the stealth flying devices came from across the border, it is safe to presume that the drones travelled at least 14 kilometers without being spotted.&nbsp; Officials, however, said that possibility of the drone being controlled from India could not be ruled out.
&nbsp;
Officials of the anti-terror agency and the Jammu and Kashmir Police say that a clarity on where the drones had taken off and their flight path were yet to be reached.
&nbsp;
Almost 24 hours after the incident, two drones were spotted over the Ratnuchak-Kaluchak military area on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday after security forces who opened fire forcing the drones to fly away.

A surveillance drone of Chinese make was shot down and seized by the Army on the Line of Control in Kupwara district on October 24, that year.&nbsp;

There were three more arms recoveries in Jammu and Punjab&rsquo;s Gurdaspur and among them was the Border Security Force recovering 14 Improvised Explosive Devices with inbuilt magnets or what is called the sticky bomb used by the Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan.&nbsp;

The matter of Pakistan using drones for surveillance and arms drop was even raised in Parliament earlier this year. Union Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy informed the Rajya Sabha that the govt was aware of such instances and has been taking various steps to meet such challenges.&nbsp;

While it is clear that the use of drones has been on rise since the reading down of Article 370, it also coincides with what many is Jammu and Kashmir security circles say the rise of militancy in the Jammu division particularly the Muslim dominated regions.&nbsp;

According to police data quoted by The Print its report, the J&amp;K Police arrested 25 people accused of working as overground workers to various militant organisations in 2020 in Jammu division. The figure for the same each year between 2015 and 2019 was not more than a dozen.&nbsp;

Moreover, a total of 13 encounters took place in Jammu last year, the Print reported. In 2015, this number was at 20, after which it was 13, 7, 16, and 9 in the following years until 2019, respectively.

With the use of drones becoming prevalent and the number of people joining militant ranks growing, a clear challenge lays ahead for the security forces in the region that has largely remained peaceful since the last decade.

In 2019, there were 167 recorded sightings of drones on the Western front. In 2020, there were 77 sightings of drones on this front," he said at a seminar organised by FICCI at Aero India 2021 exhibition. Asthana added that there have been instances of dropping of arms, ammunition, explosives and narcotics through the drones, particularly in Punjab and Jammu sectors. "As per intelligence inputs, the Pakistan Army is looking for mini or small UAVs which can stay for several hours in the air to monitor the borders with a preferable range of 150 kms," he added.
