A 42-year-old man has started a donkey farm at a village in Dakshina Kannada district.
The farm, which opened on June 8, is the first of its kind in Karnataka and the second in country after one in Ernakulam district of Kerala.
Srinivas Gowda, the owner of the farm, says he was moved by the plight of donkeys which were often spurned and undervalued.
Gowda, a BA graduate, first started Isiri farms, an integrated agriculture and animal husbandry, veterinary services, training and fodder development centre on a 2.3-acre plot at Ira village in 2020 after quitting his job in a software company.
Starting with goat breeding, the farm already has rabbits and Kadaknath chicken. The donkey farm will have 20 donkeys to start with, Gowda said.
He said the number of donkey species is dwindling as they are no longer used by dhobis with the advent of laundry machines and other technology to wash linen.
Gowda said several people were apprehensive and made fun of him when the idea of a donkey farm was shared with them. The donkey’s milk is delicious, very expensive and has medicinal value.
Gowda is planning to supply donkey’s milk to people in packets. A 30ml of milk packet will cost Rs 150 and it will be supplied through malls, shops and supermarkets, he said.
He also plans to sell donkey’s milk to be used for beauty products. Orders worth Rs 17 lakh has already been received, he says.

The study by Brooke India, a chapter of the United Kingdom-based international equine charity Brooke, has cited reduced utility, theft, illegal slaughtering and decreasing grazing land as major reasons for dwindling donkey numbers.
Field visits and interviews for the study were conducted in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Bihar, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, where a major decline in donkey population has been witnessed between 2012 and 2019, as per the livestock census.
It said Maharashtra witnessed a 50 per cent decrease in its donkey population in the eight-year period while Andhra Pradesh registered 53 per cent fall in donkey population.
Rajasthan saw a fall of 71 per cent in these eight years, Gujarat registered 71 per cent fall, Uttar Pradesh nearly&nbsp;72 per cent and Bihar registered a decline of 47 per cent in the population of donkeys between 2012 and 2019, the study said.
Increasing literacy rate, mechanisation at brick kilns and adoption of mules instead of donkeys for transportation purpose are also among the reasons for their decline, the study noted.
The porous Nepal border and donkey fair, too, deny the perception that the country is free from the fangs of illegal donkey killings, it said.
The study found that the illegal export of live donkeys, their hides and meat is being carried out across borders via easily accessible routes.
