Responding to questions from reporters on Sunday on whether it was time for Congress to pass measures aimed at pressuring Russia and President Vladimir Putin, Trump said, &ldquo;I hear they're doing that, and that&rsquo;s okay with me.&rdquo;
&ldquo;They're passing legislation... the Republicans are putting in legislation... very tough sanctioning... on any country doing business with Russia. They may add Iran to that... I suggested it,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;So any country that does business with Russia will be very severely sanctioned. We may add Iran to the formula,&rdquo; Trump reiterated.
The Trump administration has imposed 50 per cent tariffs on India, among the highest in the world, including 25 per cent levies for its purchases of Russian energy.
A bill introduced by Senator Lindsey Graham has proposed a 500 per cent tariff on secondary purchase and reselling of Russian oil. The proposal has near-unanimous backing in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Graham and Senator Richard Blumenthal have jointly introduced the Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025, which seeks to impose secondary tariffs and sanctions on &ldquo;countries that continue to fund Putin&rsquo;s barbaric war in Ukraine". The proposed legislation has 85 cosponsors in the Senate.
&ldquo;President Trump and his team have made a powerful move, implementing a new approach to end this bloodbath between Russia and Ukraine... The BBC said Thursday that its chairman had sent a letter to US President Donald Trump apologising for a misleading edit of one of his speeches, but rejected that it was grounds for a defamation lawsuit.
The comments came after Britain's embattled public broadcaster said earlier that it was investigating a possible second instance in which a Trump speech was edited in a misleading way.
On Monday, the BBC apologised for giving the impression in a documentary aired last year that Trump had directly urged "violent action" just before the assault on the US Capitol by his supporters on January 6, 2021.
The video edit has triggered a firestorm, leading the BBC director-general and the organisation's top news executive to resign on Sunday, and drawing a threat from Trump's lawyers to sue for $1 billion.
BBC Chair Samir Shah has "sent a personal letter to the White House making clear to President Trump that he and the corporation are sorry for the edit of the president's speech", the broadcaster said in a statement.
However, it added: "While the BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, we strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim."
It said BBC lawyers had written to Trump's legal team in response.
As controversy continued to swirl around the "Panorama" documentary on Trump aired in October 2024, the BBC said it was now probing another edit of Trump's speech from the day of the Capital riots.
The Telegraph newspaper said the BBC also aired another report, in June 2022 on its "Newsnight" programme, in which phrases spoken at different points in Trump's speech were edited together to make it appear as if he were urging supporters to go to the Capitol and "fight like hell".
A BBC spokesperson said: "This matter has been brought to our attention and we are now looking into it."
The editing row comes at a politically sensitive time for the BBC, which is due to renegotiate the Royal Charter that outlines the corporation's governance. Its current charter will end in 2027.

The Republican-led House of Representatives voted largely along party lines to approve a Senate-passed package that will reopen federal departments and agencies, as many Democrats fume over what they see as a capitulation by party leaders.
Trump lashed out at Democrats as he put his signature to the bill later in the Oval Office, urging Americans to remember the chaos when voting in hotly contested US midterm elections in a year's time.
"Today we are sending a clear message that we will never give in to extortion," said Trump, surrounded by gleeful Republican lawmakers including House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Johnson had earlier pointed the finger at the minority party in a withering floor speech before the vote.
"They knew that it would cause pain, and they did it anyway," he said. "The whole exercise was pointless. It was wrong and it was cruel."
The package funds military construction, veterans' affairs, the Department of Agriculture and Congress itself through next fall, and the rest of government through the end of January.
Around 670,000 furloughed civil servants will report back to work, and a similar number who were kept at their posts with no compensation -- including more than 60,000 air traffic controllers and airport security staff -- will get back pay.
The deal also restores federal workers fired by Trump during the shutdown, while air travel that has been disrupted across the country will gradually return to normal.
Trump falsely accused Democrats of costing the country $1.5 trillion. While the full financial toll of the shutdown has yet to be determined, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that it has caused $14 billion in lost growth.

Last week, the Trump administration launched about 175 investigations into H-1B visa abuse, including lapses such as low wages, work sites that didn't exist, and the practice of "benching" employees.

Relations between New Delhi and Washington have been reeling under severe stress after Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on India, including 25 per cent for New Delhi&rsquo;s procurement of Russian oil.

US senators reached a bipartisan deal Sunday that would resume federal funding and end a shutdown which has stretched to a record 40 days and forced many government operations to grind to a halt.
The deal between Democratic and Republican senators -- just the first step to halting the shutdown -- came as authorities warned US air travel could soon "slow to a trickle" as thousands more flights were cancelled or delayed over the weekend.
Outlets including CNN and Fox News reported lawmakers had reached a stopgap agreement to fund the government through January after wrangling over health care subsidies, food benefits and President Donald Trump's firings of federal employees.
As news of the breakthrough emerged, Trump told reporters when he arrived at the White House after a weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida: "It looks like we're getting very close to the shutdown ending."
The Republican-led Senate swiftly held a procedural vote Sunday aimed at moving the legislative measure forward, and the vote appeared to have support from enough Democrats to advance.
Once it clears the Senate, it would need to pass the House of Representatives, also in Republican control, and then head to Trump's desk for his signature -- a process that could take days.
Earlier Sunday, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said that if the shutdown continued, the number of flights being snarled or cut would multiply while Americans gear up to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday later this month.
By Sunday evening, the number of cancellations of flights within the United States and to and from the US had surpassed 2,700, with nearly 10,000 delays, according to data from tracking platform FlightAware.
Airports that were particularly hard hit included the three New York City area airports, Chicago's O'Hare, and Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta.
Newark's Liberty International Airport -- a major northeastern US hub -- was among the worst-hit. At New York's LaGuardia Airport more than half of all outbound flights were delayed.

Without a deal, Duffy warned that many Americans planning to travel for the November 27 Thanksgiving holiday would "not going to be able to get on an airplane, because there are not going to be that many flights that fly if this thing doesn't open back up."
It could take days for flight schedules to recover after the shutdown is finally ended, and federal funding -- including salaries -- starts to flow again.
Sunday marked the third day of flight reductions at airports nationwide, after the Trump administration ordered reductions to ease strain on air traffic controllers working without pay.
According to lawmakers, the bill would restore funding for the SNAP food stamp program which helps more than 42 million lower-income Americans pay for groceries.
It would also reverse Trump's firings of thousands of federal workers over the past month, and assure a vote on extending health care subsidies that are set to expire at the end of this year.
"This deal guarantees a vote to extend Affordable Care Act premium tax credits, which Republicans weren't willing to do," Senate Democrat Tim Kaine said in a statement.
The bill -- a so-called continuing resolution (CR) to keep government funded at pre-shutdown levels -- "will protect federal workers from baseless firings, reinstate those who have been wrongfully terminated during the shutdown, and ensure federal workers receive back pay" as required by law, he added.
But many Senate Democrats are opposed to the deal, including the chamber's top Democrat Chuck Schumer, who expressed anger that it offers a vote for extending the health care subsidies instead of extending them directly.
"I can not in good faith support this CR that fails to address the health care crisis," Schumer told the chamber, adding: "This fight will and must continue."

&ldquo;You know, I was in the midst of a trade deal with both of them (India and Pakistan), and then I read on the front page of a certain newspaper... I heard they were going to war. Seven planes were shot down, and the eighth was really badly wounded... Eight planes were shot down essentially," Trump said.

In his remarks in Miami, Trump went on to add that he helped solve the conflict between Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, Armenia and Azerbaijan and Cambodia and Thailand. &ldquo;All of them were in war&hellip; Some of the wars were 32 years old. One was 38 years old. I got some of these settled in an hour. No help from the United Nations at all," Trump said.

Polls were due to open at 6:00 am (1100 GMT) and close at 9:00 pm, while early voting, which wrapped up Sunday, saw more than 735,000 people cast ballots according to election officials, the highest ever number.
A total of 1.14 million votes were cast in 2021 which saw the election of current Mayor Eric Adams who bowed out after his reelection campaign struggled to build momentum amid scandals and corruption allegations. He endorsed Cuomo, 67.

In a final push for votes, Mamdani toured nightclubs over the Halloween weekend, making a pit stop at one event called "Papi Juice" without ditching his trademark dark suit.
If elected, he would be the city's first Muslim mayor and far-right Republicans have scorned a video he issued in Arabic to supporters in the famously diverse city.
Cuomo visited all five city boroughs Monday, while Sliwa crisscrossed the city pushing his "tough on crime" message.
The race has centered on cost of living, crime and how each candidate would handle Trump, who has threatened to withhold federal funds from the city.
"If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home," Trump wrote on social media.
Mamdani fired back during a canvassing event in Queens Monday.
"What was rumored, what was feared has become naked and unabashed -- the 'MAGA' movement's embrace of Andrew Cuomo," he said.
Syracuse University political science professor Grant Reeher said a Mamdani win would set up a "showdown" with Trump.
"Trump will treat New York City more aggressively," he said. "There will be some kind of political showdown."
Mamdani's improbable ascent to the cusp of leading America's biggest city has also sent shock waves through the Democratic Party, which is struggling to decide whether to embrace a centrist or a populist, leftist path.
"I think that this has to be a party that actually allows Americans to see themselves in it and not just be a mirror image of just a few people who are engaged in politics," Mamdani said at a dance event with the elderly Friday.

Voters in the states of New Jersey and Virginia will pick a new governor Tuesday.
Democratic Party candidate Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot, faces off against Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a businessman backed by Trump, with the two neck-and-neck according to polling.
In Virginia's race for governor, Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger has been polling comfortably ahead of Virginia's Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears.
Both sides have wheeled out big guns, with former president Barack Obama rallying support for Spanberger and Sherrill at two separate events over the weekend and Trump scheduling tele-rallies for both Virginia and New Jersey on the eve of voting.

"Russia's testing, and China's testing, but they don't talk about it," he told CBS's "60 Minutes" program, in an interview released Sunday.
"I don't want to be the only country that doesn't test," he said, adding North Korea and Pakistan to the list of nations allegedly testing their arsenals.
Confusion has surrounded Trump's order that the United States begin testing, particularly if he meant conducting the country's first nuclear explosion since 1992.
The 79-year-old Republican first made his surprise announcement by social media post on Thursday, minutes before entering a summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in South Korea.
The announcement came in the wake of Russia saying it had tested a new nuclear-powered cruise missile, the Burevestnik, and a nuclear-powered and nuclear-capable underwater drone.
Asked directly if he planned for the United States to detonate a nuclear weapon for the first time in more than three decades, Trump told CBS: "I'm saying that we're going to test nuclear weapons like other countries do, yes."
No country other than North Korea is known to have conducted a nuclear detonation for decades.
Russia and China have not carried out such tests since 1990 and 1996 respectively.
Pressed on the topic, Trump said: "They don't go and tell you about it."
"As powerful as they are, this is a big world. You don't necessarily know where they're testing."
"They test way underground where people don't know exactly what's happening with the test. You feel a little bit of a vibration," he added.
Asked about the comments Monday, China's foreign ministry denied conducting nuclear weapons tests.
As a "responsible nuclear-weapons state, China has always... upheld a self-defence nuclear strategy and abided by its commitment to suspend nuclear testing", spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a regular press conference in Beijing.
She added that China hopes the United States will "take concrete actions to safeguard the international nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime and maintain global strategic balance and stability".
Trump's energy secretary on Sunday downplayed that the United States was planning to set off a nuclear explosion.
"I think the tests we're talking about right now are system tests. These are not nuclear explosions," Chris Wright said in a Fox News interview.
"These are what we call 'non-critical explosions,' so you're testing all the other parts of a nuclear weapon to make sure they deliver the appropriate geometry and they set up the nuclear explosion," he said.
The United States has been a signatory since 1996 to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, which bans all atomic test explosions, whether for military or civilian purposes.

"They're killing the Christians and killing them in very large numbers. We're not going to allow that to happen," he added.
In an explosive post on his Truth Social platform on Saturday, Trump said that he asked the Pentagon to map out a possible plan of attack in Nigeria, one day after warning that Christianity was "facing an existential threat" in Africa's most populous country.
Nigeria, which is almost evenly divided between a Muslim-majority north and a largely Christian south, is embroiled in numerous conflicts that experts say have killed both Christians and Muslims without distinction.

"As for the differences as to whether terrorists in Nigeria target only Christians or in fact all faiths and no faiths, the differences if they exist, would be discussed and resolved by the two leaders when they meet in the coming days, either in State House or White House."
Bwala, who was speaking on the phone from Washington, declined to disclose details of any potential meeting.
Trump posted on Friday, without evidence, that "thousands of Christians are being killed (and) Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter."
Nigeria has denied that Christians have been targeted by jihadist attacks more than other faiths.

Trump added that the deal included China immediately buying "tremendous amounts of soybeans and other farm products", a key issue for Trump's support in farm country and a point of leverage for Beijing.
The US leader said the talks yielded an extendable one-year deal on China's supply of crucial rare earths, materials that are essential for sophisticated electronic components across a range of industries.
"All the rare earths has been settled, and that's for the world," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.

Trump also noted the United States has more nuclear weapons than any other country, praising his own efforts to do "a complete update and renovation of existing weapons."

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) says nine countries possess nuclear weapons: Russia, the United States, China, France, United Kingdom, Pakistan, India, Israel and North Korea.

In his remarks in Japan on Tuesday, Trump reiterated that he ended the India-Pakistan military conflict. "A lot of the wars that I stopped were because of tariffs. And, frankly, I did a great service to the world because of tariffs, because of trade. If you look at India and Pakistan, they were going at it."
"Seven planes were shot down. Seven brand-new, beautiful planes were shot down, and they were going at it, two big nuclear powers. I said to Prime Minister Modi, and I said to the prime minister and the Field Marshal over in Pakistan, I said that we're not going to do any trade if you're going to be fighting," Trump said. "(They said) 'no, no, one thing has nothing to do with the other' and I said it has a lot to do with the other. We said we are not doing any deals if you are going to fight and in about 24 hours that was the end of that, it was amazing," the US president added, referring to the stopping of the India-Pakistan conflict in May.
Last month, in his address to world leaders from the UN podium, Trump had repeated his claim that he stopped the conflict between India and Pakistan. India has been consistently maintaining that the understanding on cessation of hostilities with Pakistan was reached following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations of the two militaries.

US President Donald Trump said that &ldquo;seven brand new&rdquo; planes were shot down during the India-Pakistan conflict without specifying to which country they belonged, while once again claiming to resolve the war between the &ldquo;two big nuclear powers.&rdquo;
While speaking at a reception and dinner with business leaders in Tokyo on Tuesday, Trump said, &ldquo;Seven planes were shot down, seven brand new, beautiful planes were shot down, and they were going at it .. two big nuclear powers.&rdquo; The US President reiterated that he used trade to resolve the war between India and Pakistan.
&ldquo;I said to Prime Minister Modi, and I said to the prime minister, a very nice man, a very good man, and the Field Marshal over in Pakistan, I said, Look, we&rsquo;re not going to do any trade if you&rsquo;re going to be fighting,&rdquo; Trump said.
Trump said that India and Pakistan argued that war has nothing to do with trade with the US.

Since May 10, when Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a &ldquo;full and immediate&rdquo; ceasefire after a &ldquo;long night&rdquo; of talks mediated by Washington, he has repeated his claim dozens of times that he &ldquo;helped settle&rdquo; the conflict between India and Pakistan.
India has consistently maintained that the understanding on cessation of hostilities with Pakistan was reached following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two militaries.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.
India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the conflict after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.

The White House has claimed that India has begun "scaling back" its oil purchases from Russia at the "request" of US President Donald Trump.&nbsp;
During a press briefing on Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, "If you see and read the sanctions on Russia, they are pretty hefty."&nbsp;
She was referring to the US sanctions on Russia&rsquo;s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, on Wednesday, as part of its efforts to choke off key revenue streams for Moscow amid the Russia-Ukraine war.&nbsp;
"I saw some international news that suggests China is scaling back oil purchases from Russia; we know that India has done the same at the request of the President," she claimed.&nbsp;
Leavitt said Washington has also urged its European allies to cut their Russian oil imports as part of what she called a &ldquo;full-court press&rdquo; against Moscow's war-financing channels.&nbsp;
The US president and his administration have been claiming for the past few days that India has assured that it will significantly reduce its oil imports from Russia. However, India has been maintaining that its energy policy is guided by its own national interest, especially ensuring affordable and secure supplies for its consumers.&nbsp;
According to the US, India is helping Russian President Vladimir Putin to finance the Ukraine war through its purchase of crude oil from Moscow.&nbsp;
The relations between New Delhi and Washington have been reeling under severe stress after Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to a whopping 50 per cent, including a 25 per cent additional duty for India's purchase of Russian crude oil.&nbsp;
India described the US action as "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable". Leavitt said Trump had long signalled that he would act against Russia &ldquo;when he felt it was appropriate and necessary, and yesterday was that day&rdquo;. She said Trump has "long expressed his frustration" with Putin for showing "not enough interest or action" in moving toward a peace settlement.&nbsp;
Trump and Putin were expected to meet later this year in Hungary, but the meeting has now been postponed indefinitely. However, Leavitt said a meeting between the two leaders "is not completely off the table" and "can happen again one day".

With Prime Minister Narendra Modi unlikely to travel to Malaysia for the ASEAN summit, the Congress on Thursday claimed that the reason for his not going was that the PM doesn't want to be cornered by US President Donald Trump.&nbsp;
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said posting messages in praise of President Trump on social media is one thing, but to be seen hobnobbing physically with the man who has claimed 53 times that he stopped Operation Sindoor and has claimed five times that India has promised to stop buying oil from Russia is far too risky for him.
"For days the speculation has been - will He or won't He? Will Mr. Modi go to Kuala Lumpur for the Summit or not?" Ramesh said on X. "Now it appears certain that the PM will not go. It means the loss of so many opportunities to hug and get photo ops with world leaders or to flaunt himself as the self-styled Vishwaguru," the Congress leader said.
"The reason why Mr. Modi is not going is simple. He just doesn't want to be cornered by President Trump who will also be there. He refused an invitation to attend the Gaza peace summit in Egypt a few weeks back, precisely for this reason," Ramesh said.&nbsp;

"The PM may well be recalling that old hit Bollywood number: Bachke re rehna re baba, bachke rehna re," Ramesh said. Modi is unlikely to travel to Malaysia to participate in the meetings related to the ASEAN summit beginning Sunday due to scheduling issues, people familiar with the matter said. It is learnt that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will represent India at the meetings.&nbsp;
The ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) summit will be held in Kuala Lumpur from October 26 to 28. There is no official word on India's level of participation at the deliberations related to the summit. India is learnt to have conveyed to Malaysia that Jaishankar will represent India at the ASEAN meetings.&nbsp;
There is a possibility of PM Modi's participation through virtual mode at the ASEAN-India summit. The prime minister has led the Indian delegations at the ASEAN-India summit and the East Asia Summit in the last few years. Malaysia has invited Trump as well as leaders of several countries which are the dialogue partners of the ASEAN. Trump is set to travel to Kuala Lumpur on October 26 on a two-day trip. The ASEAN-India dialogue relations started with the establishment of a sectoral partnership in 1992. This graduated to full dialogue partnership in December 1995 and summit level partnership in 2002. The ties were elevated to a strategic partnership in 2012.&nbsp;
The 10 member countries of ASEAN are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. The two-way relations between India and ASEAN have been on a significant upswing in the last few years with focus being on boosting cooperation in the areas of trade and investment as well as security and defence.&nbsp;
