During Putin&rsquo;s two-day visit to Delhi last week, PM Modi personally welcomed him at Palam Airport, underscoring the significance of the India-Russia relationship.
The leaders then shared a car from the airport to the Prime Minister&rsquo;s residence at Lok Kalyan Marg, a gesture described by both sides as a demonstration of personal rapport.&nbsp;
The two had previously shared a car at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in China, traveling in a made-in-Russia Aurus sedan &mdash; a moment widely interpreted as a sign of their close working relationship.

She warned that President Donald Trump&rsquo;s tariffs and confrontational stance toward India were pushing the US&rsquo;s strategic partner closer to Moscow.
"Trump's policies towards India can only be described as cutting our nose to spite our face, and this is doing real and lasting damage to the strategic trust and mutual understanding between our two countries," Kamlager-Dove said. Pointing to the poster, she added, "Being a coercive partner has a cost, and this poster is worth a thousand words."
"You do not get a Nobel Peace Prize by driving US strategic partners into the arms of our adversaries," she emphasized, highlighting the potential fallout of current US policies. Kamlager-Dove also criticized Trump for undoing decades of bipartisan progress, stating, "The Biden administration handed Trump a bilateral relationship at the height of its strength, with a revitalised Quad, a budding defence tech partnership and a trusted supply chain partner, only for it to be flush, flush, flush down the toilet."
Warning of historical consequences, she said, "Unless he changes course, Trump will be the American President who lost India." The tariffs she referenced included Trump&rsquo;s 25 per cent &ldquo;Liberation Day tariffs&rdquo; plus an additional 25 per cent levy on India&rsquo;s imports of Russian oil, bringing the total to a 50 per cent burden. Kamlager-Dove noted, "The tariff rate on India is currently higher than the tariff rate on China," calling the approach counterproductive.
Urging swift action to repair the US-India partnership, Kamlager-Dove concluded, "Congress understands the stakes on a bipartisan basis. And I thank the chair for putting this on the record today."

US President Donald Trump has said it is a &ldquo;shame&rdquo; that students from countries such as India and China have to go back to their home countries after graduating from top American universities as he touted that the 'Trump Gold Card' will enable companies to hire and retain such talent in the country.
Trump on Wednesday announced the launch of the one million dollar 'Trump Gold Card' that will be a visa programme offering pathway for immigrants to US citizenship.
The Trump Gold Card is a visa based upon an individual&rsquo;s ability to provide a substantial benefit to the United States.
"It is a gift of getting somebody great coming into our country, because we think these will be some tremendous people that wouldn't be allowed to stay. They graduate from college, you have to go back to India, they have to go back to China, they have to go back to France. They have to go back to where ever they came from. Very hard to stay. It's a shame. It's ridiculous thing. We're taking care of that,&rdquo; Trump said during a roundtable in the White House.
Flanked by IBM's Indian-American CEO Arvind Krishna and Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell, Trump announced that the Gold Card website is live and companies can &ldquo;buy" the Gold Card to keep the students they hire from top American universities such as Wharton, Harvard and MIT in the US.
Trump said that he has heard from Apple CEO Tim Cook several times and other executives that they cannot hire people from the best colleges because &ldquo;you don't know whether or not you can keep the person.&rdquo;
Trump said students are &ldquo;thrown&rdquo; out of the country.
"You graduate number one from your college, and there's no way of guaranteeing... that they're able to stay in the country.&rdquo;
Trump said Cook spoke to him about this &ldquo;real problem&rdquo;.
&ldquo;It's not going to be a problem anymore. As you know, they used to send people up to Canada and other places, other countries. So we solved that,&rdquo; Trump said adding that through the Gold Card, the US will take in billions of dollars that will be used for the country.
&ldquo;So it'll be a great thing. We'll take in, I think, billions of dollars, many billions of dollars even. So that's very exciting,&rdquo; he said.
Trump added that the companies are now going to be very happy with the Gold Card, which will have greater advantages over a green card that offers permanent residency in the US.
He said companies will be able to go to the schools such as Wharton School of Finance, New York University&rsquo;s Stern Business School, Harvard, MIT, &ldquo;wherever you may get your students, any school, and you're able to buy a card and keep that person in the United States. So there's certainty.&rdquo;
Trump described the Gold Card as a &ldquo;Green Card, but much better, much more powerful, a much stronger path and a path is a big deal. Have to be great people, but much stronger path&rdquo;, which also helps companies.
He cited the example that if IBM wants to hire an individual at the top of his or her class at Wharton but can't guarantee the person stays in the country, the company can buy the Gold Card and "that employee can be there for essentially a very long period of time. It's so needed for the companies. It's basically a much better form of green card. And you can't get green cards. They are impossible to get. This is much better than a green card,&rdquo; Trump said.
Giving details of the Gold Card, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said it will cost one million dollars for an individual and two million dollars for a corporation and will involve &ldquo;full&rdquo; and &ldquo;best&rdquo; vetting to "make sure these people absolutely qualify to be in America.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Then the company can keep them here, and they have a path to citizenship. Obviously, they have to be perfect people in America, and having passed the vetting. After five years, they'll be available to become citizens,&rdquo; Lutnick said, adding that then the corporation can put someone else on the card.
&ldquo;For a company they can keep putting people on the card, one person per card, and for an individual, it's a million dollars. And it's a gift to the United States of America, to help America be great again under Donald Trump,&rdquo; Lutnick said.
Lutnick added that the Trump Gold Card is part of the already approved visas, so this will ensure that only the &ldquo;great people" come into this country. The average green card holder earned less than the average American, he said adding that &ldquo;they were more likely to be on the dole and on federal assistance programs than average Americans.
&ldquo;And the idea is from President Trump, he wants to raise it, bring in the best people into America. So same visas, but now just full of the best people,&rdquo; Lutnick said.
President Trump officially launched his &ldquo;gold card&rdquo; visa, a new immigration pathway that will allow foreigners to pay USD 1 million to expedite their visa application, or have companies pay USD 2 million to sponsor a foreign worker they want to bring into the US.
&ldquo;Very excitingly, for me and for the country, we&rsquo;ve just launched the &lsquo;Trump Gold Card,&rsquo;&rdquo; the president said at a White House roundtable event.
The visa website, trumpcard.gov, launched Wednesday afternoon and includes a link of the official application, promising &ldquo;US residency in record time.&rdquo;

&ldquo;In 10 months, I ended eight wars, including Kosovo (and) Serbia, Pakistan and India, they were going at it. Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia.&hellip; Armenia and Azerbaijan,&rdquo; Trump said on Tuesday in remarks to his supporters at a rally on the economy in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.
India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the conflict after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.
India has consistently denied any third-party intervention in resolving the conflict.
Meanwhile, Trump said Cambodia and Thailand have started fighting again and &ldquo;tomorrow&rdquo;, he will make a phone call to those countries.
&ldquo;Who else could say I'm going to make a phone call and stop a war of two very powerful countries, Thailand and Cambodia. They are going at it. But I&rsquo;ll do it. So we're making peace through strength. That's what we're doing,&rdquo; Trump said.
On immigration, Trump said that for the first time in 50 years, &ldquo;we now have reverse migration, which means more jobs, better wages and higher income for American citizens, not for illegal aliens.&rdquo;
He said that he has announced a permanent pause on &ldquo;Third World migration&rdquo;, including from &ldquo;hellholes" like Afghanistan, Haiti, Somalia and many other countries.
&ldquo;&hellip;Why can't we have some people from Norway, Sweden, just a few. Let's have a few from Denmark. Do you mind sending us a few people? Send us some nice people. Do you mind? Last month, Trump had said he would &ldquo;permanently pause" migration from &ldquo;all Third World Countries&rdquo; and deport foreign nationals who are a &ldquo;security risk&rdquo; as his administration intensified its crackdown on immigration in the wake of the killing of a National Guard member by Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal.
US Citizenship and Immigration Services issued new guidance allowing for &ldquo;negative, country-specific factors&rdquo; to be considered when vetting aliens from 19 high-risk countries.
These countries are Afghanistan, Burma, Burundi, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Laos, Libya, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Togo, Turkmenistan, Venezuela and Yemen.
These are the same countries that were subject to a travel ban announced by Trump in a proclamation issued in June this year.
The proclamation &lsquo;Restricting the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the United States from Foreign Terrorists and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats' restricted and limited the entry of nationals of these countries into the US and applied to both immigrants and nonimmigrants.

US President Donald Trump has said that India should not be "dumping" rice into the United States market and he will "take care" of it, while stressing that tariffs will solve the "problem" easily.
Trump held a roundtable in the White House on Monday with representatives of the farming and agriculture sector as well as key members of his cabinet, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins.
He announced USD 12 billion in federal aid for farmers.
Meryl Kennedy, who runs her family's agribusiness Kennedy Rice Mill in Louisiana, told Trump that rice producers in the southern part of the country are "really struggling' and that other nations are "dumping" rice into the US.
When asked by Trump which countries are dumping rice into America, Kennedy, sitting next to the President, replied, "India, and Thailand; even China into Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico used to be one of the largest markets for US rice. We haven't shipped rice into Puerto Rico in years."
Kennedy said that this has been happening for years and did not start during the Trump administration. "But unfortunately, we're seeing it in a much bigger way now," she said.
She said that tariffs imposed by the Trump administration are working, &ldquo;but we need to double down&rdquo;, to which Trump said, "You want more, I understand".
Trump then turned to Bessent and said, &ldquo;India, tell me about India. Why is India allowed to do that? They have to pay tariffs. Do they have an exemption on rice?&rdquo;
"No sir, we're still working on their trade deal," Bessent replied.
Trump then said, "But they shouldn&rsquo;t be dumping. I mean, I heard that. I heard that from others. They can&rsquo;t do that."
Kennedy then told Trump there's a World Trade Organisation case against India.
Trump asked Kennedy to give him the names of the countries dumping rice into the US and instructed Bessent to note down the names. "India. Who else?" Trump said.
"India, Thailand, China into Puerto Rico, not into the continental US, but into Puerto Rico. Those are the main culprits," Kennedy said, adding that American farmers can feed the US as well as nations around the world, but "we need fair trade, not free trade".
Trump said this will be &ldquo;so easy to settle&rdquo;.
"It's solved so quickly with tariffs to these countries that are illegally shipping. It's solved. Your problem is solved in one day. That's why we have to win the Supreme Court case," he said, adding that this problem will be solved in &ldquo;one day&rdquo;.
Lower courts in the US have ruled that Trump's use of emergency powers to impose tariffs on nations around the world is illegal, and the case will now be decided by the Supreme Court.
"It's so unfair. They go out of business. They put everyone out of business," Trump said.
Trump said that America lost half of its car industry and chip industry because these products were being manufactured in other countries, and previous administrations did not impose tariffs on these imports into the US.
"It's the same thing with rice. It'll be good, will get it solved very quickly. We just need the countries. Just give us the names of the countries. Tariffs, again. It solves the problem in two minutes," the president said.
Kennedy then said that they have "bought" the largest brands at retail, too, so they have an incentive to subsidise their products. When Trump asked, "Who did that?" she said, "Indians".
"We'll take care of it. It&rsquo;s so easy," Trump said.
India is the largest producer of rice -- 150 million tonnes -- and has a 28 per cent share of the global market. It is also the top exporter, with a 30.3 per cent share of global exports in 2024&ndash;2025, Indian Rice Exporters Federation (IREF) data shows.
According to information on the website of the India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), India exported about 2.34 lakh tonnes of rice to the US in the 2024 fiscal, less than 5 per cent of its total global basmati rice exports of 52.4 lakh tonnes.
West Asia remains the dominant destination for Indian rice, it said.
Among the rice varieties that India exports globally, 'Sona Masoori' is preferred in markets such as the US and Australia.
Trump has imposed a 50 per cent tariff on India, the highest in the world, including 25 per cent for Delhi's purchases of Russian oil.
Indian Rice Exporters Federation National President Prem Garg had termed the 25 per cent reciprocal tariff as a temporary "hurdle" for rice shipments and had stated that India still retains a pricing advantage over competitors like Vietnam and Pakistan.
"This tariff is a temporary hurdle, not a long-term roadblock. With strategic planning, diversification, and flexibility, Indian rice exporters can protect and even expand their presence in the US market," Garg had said earlier this year.

The US government has expanded screening and vetting measures for H-1B visa applicants and their H-4 dependents, directing them to keep the privacy settings on all their social media profiles set to "public".
In a new order issued Wednesday, the State Department said beginning December 15, a review of the online presence for all H-1B applicants and their dependents will be conducted. Students and exchange visitors were already subject to such scrutiny, which has now been extended to include those applying for H-1B and H-4 visas.
&ldquo;To facilitate this vetting, all applicants for H-1B and their dependents (H-4), F, M, and J nonimmigrant visas are instructed to adjust the privacy settings on all of their social media profiles to 'public',&rdquo; the State Department said.
Underscoring that a US visa is a privilege and not a right, the department said it uses all available information in screening and vetting to identify visa applicants who are inadmissible or pose a threat to America's national security or public safety. "Every visa adjudication is a national security decision," it said.
The department said the US &ldquo;must be vigilant&rdquo; to ensure applicants do not intend to harm Americans and that all visa applicants credibly establish eligibility and intent to comply with the terms of their admission.
The directive is the latest in a series of steps by the Trump administration to tighten immigration rules. The administration has launched a massive crackdown to check abuse of the H-1B visa programme, used largely by US technology companies to hire foreign workers. Indian professionals, including tech workers and physicians, form one of the largest groups of H-1B visa holders.
In September, US President Donald Trump issued a proclamation, titled &lsquo;Restriction on Entry of Certain Nonimmigrant Workers&rsquo;, imposing a one-time USD 100,000 fee on new H-1B work visas, an order that could significantly impact Indian workers seeking temporary employment in the US.
Separately, Washington has also paused with immediate effect Green Card, US citizenship and other immigration applications for people hailing from 19 &ldquo;countries of concern&rdquo;, following the shooting of National Guard soldiers by an Afghan national.
A policy memorandum issued Tuesday directs the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to &ldquo;place on hold&rdquo;, effective immediately, all asylum applications, regardless of the immigrant&rsquo;s country of nationality, pending a comprehensive review. The pause also applies to all immigration applications from nationals of 19 countries previously covered by the administration's travel ban. These countries are Afghanistan, Burma, Burundi, Chad, Congo, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Laos, Libya, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Togo, Turkmenistan, Venezuela, and Yemen. The applications will be on hold &ldquo;pending a comprehensive review, regardless of entry date&rdquo;, the directive said.
The new guidance follows the shooting of US Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and US Air Force Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, 24. Beckstrom succumbed to her injuries, Trump said Thursday during a Thanksgiving call with service members, while Wolfe remains in critical condition.
The accused, Lakanwal, 29, had entered the US through &lsquo;Operation Allies Welcome&rsquo;, a Biden-era programme for Afghan nationals fleeing the Taliban takeover in 2021.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday he believes Russia's Vladimir Putin wants to end the Ukraine war despite inconclusive talks in Moscow, as US officials prepared for a follow-up meeting with Kyiv's top negotiator.
Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner huddled into the early hours with Putin in the Kremlin but reached no breakthrough on halting Europe's worst conflict since World War II.
The Kremlin said afterward it found parts of the US plan to end the war unacceptable, even though the proposal includes Ukraine ceding parts of the eastern Donbas region it still holds nearly four years after Russia's invasion.
"I can tell you that they had a reasonably good meeting with President Putin," Trump said when an AFP reporter asked him about the talks, adding afterwards that the talks were "very good."
Trump said it was too soon to tell what would happen "because it does take two to tango."
Pressed on whether Witkoff and Kushner got any sense that Putin genuinely wanted to halt Russia's nearly four-year-old invasion, Trump replied: "He would like to end the war. That was their impression."
Trump added that Ukraine "pretty well" backed the US proposal, although he added that Kyiv should have done so earlier when he had a notoriously heated meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval office in February.
Witkoff and Kushner were now due to meet top Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov in Florida on Thursday, two US officials told AFP, to follow up on the Kremlin talks.
 - 'Successes of the Russian army' -
But while the White House had voiced optimism ahead of the Kremlin talks, Moscow said that the two sides had failed to reach a compromise and that more work was needed.
The Kremlin added Wednesday that its army's recent battlefield successes in Ukraine had bolstered its position and that Kyiv's ties to NATO remained a key question.
Russia's advance in eastern Ukraine gathered pace last month and Putin has said in recent days that Moscow is ready to fight on to seize the rest of the land it claims if Kyiv does not surrender it.
"The progress and nature of the negotiations were influenced by the successes of the Russian army on the battlefield in recent weeks," Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, who took part in the US-Russia talks, told reporters, including AFP.
Moscow insisted it was incorrect to say Putin rejected the plan in its entirety.
It also said Russia was still committed to diplomacy, despite Putin's stark warning earlier this week that Moscow was prepared to fight Europe if it wanted war.
"We are still ready to meet as many times as is needed to reach a peace settlement," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
 - 'Opportunity to end the war' -
In Kyiv, Zelensky said that though a window of opportunity for peace has opened, it must be accompanied by pressure on Moscow.
"The world now clearly feels that there is an opportunity to end the war, and the current activity in negotiations must be supported by pressure on Russia," he said in a regular evening address.
The fresh talks come as NATO pledges to buy hundreds of millions of dollars worth of US arms for Kyiv.
NATO chief Mark Rutte said it was positive that peace talks were ongoing, but that the alliance should make sure that "Ukraine is in the strongest possible position to keep the fight going".
Russian troops have been grinding forward across the front line against outgunned and outnumbered Ukrainian forces.
Earlier this week, Moscow claimed to have captured the important stronghold of Pokrovsk, but a Ukrainian army unit fighting in the city said urban combat was still ongoing.
European countries have expressed fears Washington and Moscow will reach agreements without them and have spent the last weeks trying to amend the US plan so that it does not force Kyiv to capitulate.

The US government has halted immigration applications for citizens from 19 nations including Afghanistan, Yemen and Haiti, an official memorandum said Tuesday, deepening the nation's sweeping crackdown on migration.
Authorities paused green card and citizenship processing, according to the memo, for people from countries already subject to travel restrictions announced in June by President Donald Trump.
Those 19 nations also include Venezuela, Sudan and Somalia.
Senior US officials have signaled in recent days they would starkly tighten restrictions on immigration, a move fueled by the shooting of two National Guard soldiers last week.
The main suspect in the shooting, which killed one, is an Afghan national.
The man, who on Tuesday pleaded not guilty to murder charges, entered the United States during mass evacuations as foreign forces withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021.
"USCIS plays an instrumental role in preventing terrorists from seeking safe haven in the United States and ensuring that USCIS' screening and vetting and adjudications prioritize the safety of the American people and uphold all US laws," the memorandum said, referring to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services.
The memorandum said the US had recently seen "what a lack of screening, vetting, and prioritizing expedient adjudications can do to the American people," citing the suspected shooter in last week's attack as an example.
Trump, who campaigned for the White House on a pledge to deport millions of undocumented migrants, said on November 26, following the shooting that he planned to "permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries to allow the US system to fully recover."
US Homeland Security chief Kristi Noem also urged on Monday an expansion of the list of countries covered by the June travel restrictions.
"I just met with the President. I am recommending a full travel ban on every damn country that's been flooding our nation with killers, leeches, and entitlement junkies," she said on X, without naming which countries she believed should be included.
The travel restrictions currently also apply to Burundi, Chad, Republic of Congo, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Iran, Laos, Libya, Myanmar, Sierra Leone, Togo, and Turkmenistan.
Also on Tuesday, US media reported federal authorities planned in coming days to launch a major immigration enforcement operation in Minnesota that would focus on Somali immigrants, sparking pushback from local leaders who said state police would not cooperate.
"Our values and our commitments to the Somali community, to every community of immigrants and people in our city is rock solid and will be unwavering," said Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey.

The US leader has been pushing for a security pact between Israel and Syria since President Ahmed al-Sharaa's Islamist coalition overthrew longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad a year ago.
But tensions have risen over hundreds of strikes by Israel on Syria, and in the deadliest so far Israeli forces killed 13 people on Friday in an operation in the southern village of Beit Jin.
Syria called the Israeli operation a "war crime." Israel said it targeted an Islamist group.

Trump had earlier announced that Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old West Virginia National Guard member deployed in Washington as part of his crackdown on crime, had died from her wounds.
The FBI has launched an international terror investigation as new details emerged about the alleged gunman, a 29-year-old Afghan national who had served with US troops in Afghanistan.
The shooting on Wednesday, which officials described as an "ambush-style" attack, brings together three politically explosive issues: Trump's controversial use of the military at home, immigration, and the legacy of the US war in Afghanistan.

Joseph Edlow, Trump's director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), said Thursday that he had ordered a "full scale, rigorous reexamination of every Green Card for every alien from every country of concern."
His agency later pointed to a list of 19 countries -- including Afghanistan, Cuba, Haiti, Iran and Myanmar -- facing US travel restrictions under a previous order from Trump in June.
The Trump administration had earlier ordered an immediate halt to the processing of immigration applications from Afghanistan.
 - Gunned down in 'brazen' attack -
The other soldier injured in Wednesday's attack, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, was "fighting for his life" Thursday, Trump said. The suspected shooter was also in a serious condition.
The US attorney for Washington DC, Jeanine Pirro, said the suspected assailant -- identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal -- had been living in the western state of Washington and had driven across the country to the nation's capital.
In what she called a "brazen and targeted" attack, Pirro said the gunman opened fire with a .357 Smith and Wesson revolver on a group of guardsmen on patrol just a few blocks from the White House.
The suspect was charged with three counts of assault with intent to kill -- charges that Pirro said would immediately be upgraded to first-degree murder if any of the guardsmen died.
Officials said they still had no clear understanding of the motive behind the shooting.

CIA director John Ratcliffe said the suspect had been part of a CIA-backed "partner force" fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan, and had been brought to the United States as part of a program to evacuate Afghans who had worked with the agency.
The heads of the FBI, CIA and Homeland Security and other senior Trump appointees all insisted that Lakanwal had been granted unvetted access to the United States because of lax asylum policies in the wake of the chaotic final US withdrawal from Afghanistan under former president Joe Biden.
But AfghanEvac, a group that helped resettle Afghans in the United States after the military withdrawal, said they undergo "some of the most extensive security vetting" of any migrants.
The group noted Lakanwal had been granted asylum in April 2025, under the Trump administration, and would be eligible to request permanent residency a year later.
"This individual's isolated and violent act should not be used as an excuse to define or diminish an entire community," said its president, Shawn VanDiver.
In the wake of Wednesday's shooting, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced 500 more troops would deploy to Washington, bringing the total to 2,500.
Trump has deployed troops to several cities, all run by Democrats, including Washington, Los Angeles and Memphis. The move has prompted multiple lawsuits and allegations of authoritarian overreach by the White House.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the two Guards members were in "critical condition."
Trump earlier said on social media that the suspect was "also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price."
An AFP reporter near the scene heard several loud pops and saw people running.
Dozens of bystanders were caught up in the chaos.
"We heard gunshots. We were waiting at the traffic light and there were several shots," said Angela Perry, 42, who was driving home with her two children.
"You could see National Guard running toward the metro with their weapons drawn."
Soon after the shootings, security agents flooded the area. Officers carrying rifles stood guard behind yellow tape at the perimeter and a helicopter circled overhead.
An AFP reporter saw emergency crews running toward the metro with a wheeled stretcher and shortly after emerging with a casualty wearing camouflage whom they loaded into an ambulance.

I&rsquo;ve done very well with that over the years, even before this. I was talking about the different wars&hellip; India, Pakistan... they were going to go at it, nuclear weapons,&rdquo; Trump said on Wednesday.
Speaking at the US-Saudi Investment Forum attended by visiting Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman, Trump said that he told the two nuclear-armed neighbours that they &ldquo;can go at it, but I'm putting a 350 per cent tariff on each country. No more trade with the United States.&rdquo;
Claiming that both India and Pakistan told him not to do it, Trump said that he told them, &ldquo;I'm going to do it. Come back to me and I'll take it down. But I'm not going to have you guys shooting nuclear weapons at each other, killing millions of people and having the nuclear dust floating over Los Angeles. I'm not going to do it&rsquo;.&rdquo;
Trump then said that he was &ldquo;all set&rdquo; and told Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that he will put a 350 per cent tariff to settle (the conflict) and added, if the countries stopped the war, &ldquo;we'll make a nice trade deal,&rdquo; as they are in the midst of the negotiations for the trade deal.
&ldquo;Now, no other president would have done that&hellip; I used tariffs to settle all these wars, not all of them. Five of the eight were settled because of the economy, because of trade, because of tariffs,&rdquo; Trump said. &ldquo;I did this.&rdquo;
He added that Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called him and thanked him, in front of White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, for saving millions of lives. Trump then claimed that he &ldquo;got a call from Prime Minister Modi saying, &lsquo;we're done&rsquo;. I said, &lsquo;you're done with what?&rsquo;&rdquo; Trump said and claimed Modi replied: &ldquo;We're not going to go to war.&rdquo;
Trump said he then thanked Modi and said, &ldquo;Let's make a deal.&rdquo;
The US president also added that he saved a lot of people, millions of people, in many other wars. Trump had repeated the claim that he stopped the war between India and Pakistan a day earlier too during a bilateral meeting with the Saudi Crown Prince in the Oval Office.
Since May 10, when Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a &ldquo;full and immediate&rdquo; ceasefire after a &ldquo;long night&rdquo; of talks mediated by Washington, he has repeated his claim over 60 times that he &ldquo;helped settle&rdquo; the tensions between India and Pakistan.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians.&nbsp;
India has consistently denied any third-party intervention and maintained that the understanding on cessation of hostilities with Pakistan was reached on May 10 following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two militaries.

He said that a company cannot open up a big computer chip plant &ldquo;with people that don't even know what a chip looks like.&rdquo;
Earlier this month, Trump had defended the H-1B visa programme, saying America has to bring in talent from around the world as it does not have &ldquo;certain talents&rdquo; in the country. &ldquo;I agree but you also do have to bring in talent,&rdquo; Trump had said in an interview with Laura Ingraham on Fox News.
When Ingraham noted that "we have plenty of talent&rdquo;, Trump had said, &ldquo;No, you don&rsquo;t, no you don&rsquo;t. You don&rsquo;t have certain talents. And people have to learn. Donald Trump signed into law on Wednesday legislation requiring the release of government records on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, spurring a showdown over whether the US president will allow full disclosure -- or return to trying to bury the case.
Trump stunned Washington over the weekend, reversing his months-long opposition to the Epstein Files Transparency Act, and ensuring that it sailed through Congress on Tuesday in a rare show of bipartisan unity.
The Republican president, a former friend of the late sex offender, announced on social media late Wednesday that he had signed the bill, forgoing any media spectacle of the event.
Insiders warn that even with the president's signature, his administration could lean on redactions, procedural delays or lingering federal investigations to keep explosive details out of the public eye.
"Once the president signs the bill, he must apply and execute it faithfully. There must be no funny business from Donald Trump," top Democrat Chuck Schumer warned in a speech on the Senate floor.
"He must not use the excuse of frivolous investigations to release some Epstein documents, while intentionally hiding others that deserve to be seen by the American public."
Epstein, a wealthy financier, moved in elite circles for years, cultivating close ties with business tycoons, politicians, academics and celebrities to whom he was accused of trafficking girls and young women for sex.
Trump and his allies spent years pushing theories about powerful Democrats being protected over involvement with Epstein, framing the case as a potent symbol of how powerful men can hide behind lawyers, money and connections.
But Trump himself was a longtime associate of Epstein, raising questions over what he knew about the notorious figure.
Far beyond Trump's conspiracy-minded voter base, the saga dented public trust in the US justice system and raised suspicion among voters who believe important pieces of the story were either hidden or ignored.
Epstein's 2019 arrest fueled a storm of outrage and pressure for a full accounting of his network, his finances and the people who helped him evade.
Conspiracy theories about a cover-up only deepened after his death -- ruled a suicide -- in a New York jail soon after.

Passage of the Epstein Files Transparency Act in Congress marked a moment of deep emotional resonance, with abuse survivors filling the House gallery as the vote was called, hugging and cheering when it passed.
It was a sharp rebuke of Trump and his ally, House Speaker Mike Johnson, who had led efforts to prevent disclosure.
Johnson had said he would "cross that bridge" when asked if he'd push Trump to veto the bill.
The president had warned House Republicans off the action but reversed course, fearing humiliation as he faced the largest rebellion of his presidency.
Under the law, the Justice Department has a month to dump its unclassified files online -- in a searchable trove of transcripts, flight logs and communications that could unearth unseen names and connections.
The text makes only narrow exceptions for personal data and genuine legal and security concerns.
But analysts question whether officials will comply, or argue that sensitive material cannot be released because related probes remain active -- including a new investigation ordered by Trump last week into Epstein's ties with Democrats.
"(This) might be a big smoke screen, these investigations, to open a bunch of them as a last-ditch effort to prevent the release of the Epstein files," Thomas Massie, the Kentucky Republican who pushed the House vote, told ABC News.
The Justice Department and FBI said in July they had uncovered no evidence in a review of the files that would support further action, and it was not clear if the new probe ordered by Trump on Friday would hamper disclosure.
Attorney General Pam Bondi was pressed on the justification for further investigation and said there was "new information, additional information."
"If there are any victims, we encourage all victims to come forward," she told reporters. "And we will continue to provide maximum transparency under the law."

President Donald Trump on Tuesday dismissed US intelligence findings that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman likely had some culpability in the 2018 killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi as Trump warmly welcomed the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia on his first White House visit in seven years.
The US-Saudi relationship had, for a time, been sent into a tailspin by the operation targeting Khashoggi, a fierce critic of the kingdom. But seven years later, the dark clouds over the relationship have been cleared away. And Trump is tightening his embrace of the 40-year-old crown prince, who he said is an indispensable player in shaping the Middle East in the decades to come.
Trump in his defense of the crown prince derided Khashoggi as &ldquo;extremely controversial&rdquo; and said &ldquo;a lot of people didn't like that gentleman.&rdquo; Prince Mohammed denies involvement in the killing of Khashoggi, who was a Saudi citizen and Virginia resident.
&ldquo;Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen,&rdquo; Trump said of the international incident when asked about it by a reporter during an Oval Office appearance with Prince Mohammed. &ldquo;But (Prince Mohammed) knew nothing about it. And we can leave it at that. You don't have to embarrass our guest by asking a question like that.&rdquo;
But US intelligence officials determined that the Saudi crown prince likely approved the killing by Saudi agents of US-based journalist inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, according to US findings declassified in 2021 at the start of the Biden administration. Trump officials, during his first administration, refused to release the report.
Prince Mohammed said Saudi Arabia &ldquo;did all the right steps&rdquo; to investigate Khashoggi's death. &ldquo;It's painful and it's a huge mistake,&rdquo; he said.
Trump, who said the two leaders have become &ldquo;good friends," even commended the Saudi leader for strides made by the kingdom on human rights without providing any specific detail. &ldquo;What's he done is incredible in terms of human rights and everything else," Trump said.
New investment from Saudis
The crown prince for his part announced Saudi Arabia was increasing its planned investments in the US to USD 1 trillion, up from USD 600 billion that the Saudis announced they would pour into the United States when Trump visited the kingdom in May.
Echoing rhetoric that Trump likes to use, the crown prince used the moment to flatter the Republican leader by calling the US the &ldquo;hottest country on the planet" for foreign investment. &ldquo;What you're creating is not about an opportunity today. It's also about long term opportunity,&rdquo; Prince Mohammed said.
Trump's family has a strong personal interest in the kingdom. In September, London real estate developer Dar Global announced that it plans to launch Trump Plaza in the Red Sea city of Jeddah. It's Dar Global's second collaboration with the Trump Organisation, the collection of companies controlled by the US president's children, in Saudi Arabia.
Trump pushed back on suggestions that there could be a conflict of interest in his family's dealings with the Saudis. &ldquo;I have nothing to do with the family business,&rdquo; Trump said.
Trump's comments about Khashoggi's and defense of his family's business in Saudi Arabia were blasted by human rights and government oversight activists. Human rights groups say Saudi authorities continue to harshly repress dissent, including by arresting human rights defenders, journalists, and political dissidents for criticism against the kingdom. They also note a surge in executions in Saudi Arabia that they connect to an effort to suppress internal dissent.
&ldquo;President Trump has Jamal Khashoggi's blood on his hands,&rdquo; said Raed Jarrar, advocacy director for DAWN, a US-based group advocating for democracy and human rights in the Arab world that was founded by Khashoggi. Jarrar added, &ldquo;Trump has made himself complicit in every execution and imprisonment MBS has ordered since."
Rolling out the red carpet
Trump warmly received Prince Mohammed when he arrived at the White House Tuesday morning for a pomp-filled arrival ceremony that included a military flyover and a thundering greeting from the US Marine band. Technically, it's not a state visit, because the crown prince is not the head of state. But Prince Mohammed has taken charge of the day-to-day governing for his father, King Salman, 89, who has endured health problems in recent years.
Trump showed the prince the newly-installed Presidential Walk of Fame that features gold-framed images of past presidents along the West Wing colonnade and a photo of an autopen signing the name of Biden in place of the Democrat's official portrait.
Later, Trump and first lady Melania Trump welcomed the crown prince for a black-tie dinner in the White House East Room. The boldface names who attended included Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Trump at the dinner announced he was designating Saudi Arabia as a major non-NATO ally as the administration aims to elevate the two nations' military relationship. The designation, while largely symbolic, provides foreign partners with certain benefits in the areas of defense, trade and security cooperation.
Trump and Prince Mohammed will attend an investment summit at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday that will include the heads of Salesforce, Qualcomm, Pfizer, the Cleveland Clinic, Chevron and Aramco, Saudi Arabia's national oil and natural gas company, where even more deals with the Saudis could be announced.
Fighter jets and business deals
On the eve of Prince Mohammed's arrival, Trump announced he has agreed to sell the Saudis F-35 fighter jets despite some concerns within the administration that the sale could lead to China gaining access to the US technology behind the advanced weapon system. The White House announced the two leaders formalized the F-35 agreement Tuesday as well as a deal for the Saudis to purchase nearly 300 tanks from the US.
They also signed agreements signifying closer cooperation on capital markets and critical minerals markets, as well as efforts against money laundering and terrorist financing.
Trump's announcement on the fighter jets was surprising because some in the Republican administration have been wary about upsetting Israel's qualitative military edge over its neighbours, especially at a time when Trump is depending on Israeli support for the success of his Gaza peace plan.
Abraham Accord talks
The visit comes at a moment when Trump is trying to nudge the Saudis toward normalising relations with Israel. The president in his first term had helped forge commercial and diplomatic ties between Israel and Bahrain, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates through an effort dubbed the Abraham Accords.
Trump sees expansion of the accords as essential to his broader efforts to build stability in the Middle East after the two-year Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Getting Saudi Arabia &mdash; the largest Arab economy and the birthplace of Islam &mdash; to sign on would spur a domino effect, he argues.
But the Saudis have maintained that a path toward Palestinian statehood must first be established before normalizing relations with Israel can be considered. The Israelis remain steadfastly opposed to the creation of a Palestinian state.
&ldquo;We want to be part of the Abraham Accords, but we want also to be sure that we secure a clear path of a two-state solution,&rdquo; Prince Mohammed said.

But all that the PM has said is that the US President extended Diwali greetings. But while Mr. Modi conceals, Mr. Trump reveals."
"On his part, the US President has said that in addition to extending Diwali greetings, he spoke of India's oil imports from Russia and that he had been assured that these imports will be stopped. This is the 4th time in 6 days that the US President has announced India's policy," Ramesh said on X.
Earlier, President Trump had first announced the stoppage of Operation Sindoor on the evening of May 10 before Prime Minister Modi did, he said.
In a post on X on Wednesday morning, Modi said, "Thank you, President Trump, for your phone call and warm Diwali greetings.".
"On this festival of lights, may our two great democracies continue to illuminate the world with hope and stand united against terrorism in all its forms," the prime minister said.
The phone call between the two leaders comes at a time when the US-India relationship has hit a rough patch over trade tariffs and other issues.
Earlier, Trump in his remarks at the White House said, "I love the people of India. We're working on some great deals between our countries. I spoke to Prime Minister Modi today and we just have a very good relationship'. He's not going to buy much oil from Russia. He wants to see that war end as much as I do. He wants to see the war between Russia and Ukraine to end."
"They're not going to be buying too much oil. So they've cut it way back, and they're continuing to cut it way back," Trump said.
