Former US Open champion Dominic Thiem had a brush with one of Australia's most venomous snakes during a qualifying match at the Brisbane International on Saturday.
The former world No.3 was a set down to 20-year-old Australian James McCabe in a first-round qualifying match when fans courtside spotted the snake.
Security personnel quickly arrived, but the umpire had to stop play as the snake slithered onto the court to the shock of the players and fans.
&ldquo;I really love animals, especially exotic ones,&rdquo; Thiem said. &ldquo;But, they said it was a really poisonous snake and it was close to the ball kids, so it was a really dangerous situation.
&ldquo;It's something that has never happened to me and is something I'll definitely never forget.&rdquo; The snake &mdash; identified as a 50-centimetre eastern brown snake and one of Australia's most deadly reptiles &mdash;was soon safely removed allowing play to resume.
But, Thiem was not yet out of danger as he had to save three match points before levelling the match by winning the second set tiebreak. The 30-year-old then went on to clinch the deciding set for a 2-6. 7-6 (4), 6-4 win.
The Austrian, currently ranked No.98 after several years with a troublesome wrist injury, will face either Italian Giulio Zeppieri or another Australian, Omar Jasika, in the final qualifying round tomorrow.
Thiem reached the final of the Australian Open in 2020 when he pushed champion Novak Djokovic to five sets and won the US Open later that year.

Dominic Thiem, the 2020 US Open champion, has responded to Alexander Bublik's 'disabled' comment during their opening round clash at the Flushing Meadows.&nbsp; The 29-year-old prevailed over Bublik in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 to register his first Grand Slam win since Australian Open 2021.&nbsp; Comments made by Bublik during the second set have overshadowed Thiem's flawless victory.&nbsp; Thiem had suffered a major wrist injury in 2021 which had sidelined him and also marred his form in the past two years.&nbsp; According to videos doing the rounds on social media, Bublik is allegedly heard saying in Russian, 'I'm sick of getting all these disabled people back in their career.'&nbsp; Responding to the comment, the Austrian stated, 'I don&rsquo;t know if the translation is right, you know. If it is, then it&rsquo;s a tough saying. Something you shouldn&rsquo;t say in general just out of respect. But maybe he didn&rsquo;t mean it that way or whatever. But what can I say about it.'&nbsp;
Meanwhile, tennis fans have not taken Bublik's comments lightly.&nbsp;
Under the video of the alleged statement, one has written, 'I speak the language (unfortunately). The translation is absolutely correct. I think it's even softer than the original words.'&nbsp;
And one fan wrote, 'Apart from this being incredibly offensive, perhaps he should simply start playing better tennis so that he doesn&rsquo;t lose so easily? Just a thought!'&nbsp;
Fans also hailed Thiem's response.&nbsp;
One called him a pure soul and wrote, 'Wanting to give Bublik the benefit of the doubt. He doesn't deserve it, Dominic.'&nbsp;
Others chimed in saying that if they were in Thiem's place they would have been really petty about the entire ordeal.&nbsp;
But a few have come out in Bublik's defense stating that if people know the way the Kazakh player speaks, they will understand that his comment was sarcastic.&nbsp; The 26-year-old's comment seemingly references his previous clashes in 2023 to veteran players like Gael Monfils and Stan Wawrinka, both of whom returned from injuries to defeat him.&nbsp;

In a long note, the former World no. 3 who hasn't played since June, when he hurt himself during the Mallorca&nbsp;Open informed that he will now resume his game in Cordoba&nbsp;Open in Argentina which is set to begin by January end.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Saying that his wrist is in optimal condition, the 28-year-old who has won a single Grand Slam said that he is practising normally with very good intensity.&nbsp;
I will miss the Australian fans, but I will be back in 2023, he added.&nbsp;
