Kamala Harris: became US Vice President due to my mother's determination

She recollected her frequent visits to Chennai as a child and celebrating Diwali with grandparents.

United States Vice President Kamala Harris attributed her success to the dedication, determination and courage of her Indian American mother.
Harris is the first Indian-origin vice president of the US.
&ldquo;It is because of her dedication, her determination and her courage that I stand before you as vice president of the United States,&rdquo; Harris told a gathering of more than 200 eminent Indian Americans at a White House Diwali reception hosted by President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.
She recollected her frequent visits to Chennai as a child and celebrating Diwali with grandparents.
&ldquo;I have such fond memories of celebrating Diwali as a child. Like many of you, we would go to India about every other year, avoiding the monsoon season, and we would go for Diwali. I have such fond memories of waking up in the middle of the night, me and my sister Maya, and going, of course, to the eldest in our family, which was our grandfather.
&ldquo;And later in the day, my mother would give us little sparklers and we would go into the streets to celebrate this very important occasion,&rdquo; she recalled.
Harris said her mother arrived in the US at the age of 19 for studies. &ldquo;She arrived by herself. But it was her goal to become a breast cancer researcher. And in our country, in this country, she built a life. She earned her PhD, excelled in her field and raised my sister and me,&rdquo; Harris said.

Describing Diwali a &ldquo;holiday of hope&rdquo;, she said the festival helps one to see light in the world, in each other and in oneself. &ldquo;We also are reminded to shine our light in the darkness to fight for peace, for justice, for understanding.&rdquo; &ldquo;Even as powerful forces work to sow hate and divide, we remember that in these moments where we see darkness, our light shines the brightest. That is part of what reminds us of Diwali. In moments of darkness, we see the light,&rdquo; she said.
On the occasion, Harris called on the people to realise the ideals of freedom, democracy and equality.
Harris had on Friday hosted more than 100 Indian Americans at her residence for Diwali celebrations. She not only decorated the entire Naval Observatory residence with diyas, but also lit little sparklers with the guests.
President Biden appreciated Harris for often mentioning her mother in her speeches.
&ldquo;And one of the things I admire the most about Kamala, she often talks about her mom,&rdquo; he said. Harris celebrated her birthday last week. &ldquo;She turned 30,&rdquo; Biden said jokingly amidst laughter from the guests.
&ldquo;We know your mom's always with you. Yes, all the time. And I want to thank you for the courage it took for her and for so many of you out there to actually pick up and move your families and start the journey to America,&rdquo; Biden said.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s pretty amazing the sacrifices to leave everything behind, choosing to believe the idea that this nation has a singular place in the place of possibilities,&rdquo; he added. Biden recollected that one of the last events he had hosted at the Vice President's Naval Observatory in late November 2016 was Diwali.
&ldquo;It was the first Diwali reception ever to be held there. I'm an Irish Catholic and opening our home for holidays, observed by Hindus, Buddhist, Jains, Sikhs&hellip; that night we were joined by Muslims, Christians and people representing diversity and diaspora here in America from all over the world, including the then newly elected Indian American members of Congress, two of whom are here today, Ro (Khanna) and Raja (Krishnamoorthi),&rdquo; he recalled.

The Delhi government had in September announced a complete ban on the production, sale and use of all types of firecrackers till January 1, 2023.

The air quality in Delhi on the morning after Diwali was recorded in the 'very poor' category but the situation was relatively better than previous years due to favourable meteorological conditions which diluted the effect of firecrackers and stubble burning.
The capital's air quality index (AQI) stood at 326 at 8 am on Tuesday.
The neighbouring cities of Ghaziabad (285), Noida (320), Greater Noida (294), Gurugram (315) and Faridabad (310) reported 'poor' to 'very poor' air quality.
An AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.
The relatively better air this morning doesn't mean it's good air. The PM2.5 levels at 30 out of the 35 monitoring stations in the capital were five to six times the national standard of 60 micrograms per cubic metre at 8 am.
PM2.5 are fine particles that are 2.5 microns or less in diameter and can travel deep into the respiratory tract, reaching the lungs and entering the bloodstream.
Though people burst firecrackers in several parts of Delhi despite a ban on them, the intensity appeared less as compared to the last two years.
The Delhi government had in September announced a complete ban on the production, sale and use of all types of firecrackers till January 1, 2023, including on Diwali, a practice it has been following for the last two years.
Farm fires raged across Punjab and Haryana on Monday but the wind speed was moderately unfavourable for the transport of smoke. Hence, the contribution of stubble burning to Delhi's pollution (around 10 per cent) was also "not very significant", said Gufran Beig, chair professor, National Institute of Advanced Studies, Indian Institute of Science.
Emissions from firecrackers and farm fires have contributed significantly to Delhi's PM2.5 pollution on Diwali over the years.
Their share this year was relatively less than previous years due to reduced firecrackers bursting and moderately warm and windier conditions which prevented rapid accumulation of pollutants.
Diwali was celebrated on November 4 in 2021 and on November 14 in 2020 when temperatures were considerably low and winds calm.
According to the Early Warning System of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), the air quality is predicted to remain in the 'very poor' category during the day (Tuesday) and is likely to improve slightly over the next two days.
Delhi recorded a 24-hour average AQI of 312 at 4 pm on Monday -- the second best for Diwali day in seven years.

Before this, the city recorded an AQI of 281 on Diwali in 2018.
Delhi had recorded an AQI of 382 on Diwali last year, 414 in 2020, 337 in 2019, 319 in 2017, and 431 in 2016, according to Central Pollution Control Board data.
On Sunday evening, the city reported a 24-hour average AQI of 259, which was the lowest for Diwali eve in seven years.
"The share of PM2.5 in Delhi's air has increased which is indicative of contribution from firecrackers and stubble burning," said Beig, also the founder project director of SAFAR, a forecasting agency under the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences.
"Though the active fire counts have doubled, the wind direction is north westerly and the wind speed is moderate (not very favourable for the transport of smoke from farm fires). Hence, the contribution of stubble burning is not very significant," he said.
Stubble burning is likely to account for 12 to 15 per cent of Delhi's PM2.5 solution on Tuesday, he added.
The Indian Agricultural Research Institute reported 1,019 farm fires in Punjab, 250 in Haryana and 215 in Uttar Pradesh on Monday evening.
The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) had earlier predicted that the air quality in Delhi will be recorded in the 'very poor' category if no firecrackers are burst.
In case firecrackers are burst like last year, the air quality may plunge to 'severe' levels on the night of Diwali itself, it had said.
Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai had earlier said bursting of firecrackers on Diwali in the city will attract a jail term up to six months and a fine of Rs 200.
He had said production, storage and sale of firecrackers here will be punishable with a fine of up to Rs 5,000 and three years in jail under Section 9B of the Explosives Act.
A total of 408 teams have been constituted to implement the ban. The Delhi Police has set up 210 teams under assistant commissioners of police, the Department of Revenue has set up 165 teams and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee has constituted 33 teams.

US President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr Jill Biden on Monday hosted a Diwali reception at the White House in what they called the largest since the People&rsquo;s House started celebrating the festival during the George Bush administration.
More than 200 eminent Indian Americans attended the reception at the East Room, a venue which has witnessed some of the landmark events related to the India-US relationship, including the signing of the nuclear deal and the joint press conference by then US President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in November 2008.
The reception saw some enthralling cultural events, including performances by sitarist Rishab Sharma and dance troupe The Sa Dance Company. The guests, dressed in traditional Indian attires such as saree, lehenga and sherwani, relished some mouthwatering Indian delicacies.
&ldquo;The room is full at the East state dining room&hellip; This is a real celebration of what the Indian American community has achieved in the United States. It&rsquo;s a wonderful recognition by the President and by the White House to host all of us on Diwali. I feel very privileged to be here as an Indian American,&rdquo; Atul Keshap, president of US India Business Council told PTI during the reception.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s an honour and a privilege to be here to celebrate Diwali. Indian Americans thank the President and the First Lady for this,&rdquo; said H R Shah, chairman and CEO of TV Asia, the largest South Asian television channel in the US.
&ldquo;It was heartening to see the leaders of our vibrant Indian American community come together at the White House during Diwali to be a force for good. It was also nice to hear the president on Diwali day welcoming Rishi Sunak as the new prime minister of the UK,&rdquo; said M R Rangaswami, entrepreneur, philanthropist and founder of Indiaspora.

Ajay Jain Bhutoria, a member of the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, said the event was held to recognise the South Asian community&rsquo;s contributions in economic development and managing Covid crisis among others.

Lauding the Diwali celebration, Bhutoria said it sent a message &ldquo;how much President Biden and this administration loves and respects the South Asian community&rdquo;.

Diwali morning: Delhi's air quality turns very poor

On Sunday evening, the city reported a 24-hour average air quality index or AQI of 259, which was lowest for the day before Diwali in seven years.

Delhi's air quality turned "very poor" on Monday morning as unfavourable meteorological conditions allowed accumulation of pollutants, and emissions from firecrackers and stubble burning compounded the situation.
On Sunday evening, the city reported a 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) of 259, which was lowest for the day before Diwali in seven years.
However, pollution levels crept up at night amid a drop in temperature and wind speed as people burst firecrackers in several parts of the national capital and the number of farm fires rose to 1,318, the highest this season so far.
Delhi's AQI stood at 301 at 8 am on Monday.
Twenty of the 35 monitoring stations in the city recorded the air quality in the "very poor" category, while the Anand Vihar station reported "severe" pollution levels (AQI 401).
The Delhi administration had on Saturday issued an order banning private construction in Anand Vihar and neighbouring areas considering the spike in air pollution levels there.
The neighbouring cities of Ghaziabad (302), Noida (302), Greater Noida (285), Gurugram (271) and Faridabad (256) reported poor to very poor air quality.
An AQI between zero and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and 401 and 500 "severe".
SAFAR, a forecasting agency under the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences, had earlier predicted that the air quality may deteriorate to "very poor" on Monday morning (Diwali) due to calm winds and low temperatures which allow rapid accumulation of pollutants in the air.
It will continue to remain "very poor" if no firecrackers are burst, it said In case firecrackers are burst like last year, the air quality may plunge to "severe" levels on the night of Diwali itself and continue to remain in the "red" zone for another day, the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) had predicted.
Diwali is being celebrated across the country on Monday.

The contribution of stubble burning to Delhi's PM2.5 pollution has so far remained low (up to five per cent) due to a slow transport-level wind speed. But, it is likely to increase to eight percent on Monday. &nbsp; Gufran Beig, founder project director, SAFAR, said the transport-level wind direction and speed is likely to become "very favourable" for transport of smoke from stubble burning from Monday afternoon.
"It will increase the share of stubble burning in Delhi's PM2.5 pollution to 15-18 per cent on October 25 and push the air quality into the 'severe' category," he said.
The Indian Agricultural Research Institute reported 902 farm fires in Punjab, 217 in Haryana and 109 in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday evening. &nbsp;According to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), intensive stubble burning is expected in the following weeks, further increasing Delhi's PM2.5 level which is around 110 microgram per cubic metre already.
