Disney Star, the holder of ICC TV and digital media rights until 2023, broadcasted the matches on its Star network channels and streamed them at no cost on the Disney+ Hotstar app.

The ICC Cricket World Cup proved to be a costly venture for Disney Star's sports segment, with operating losses skyrocketing to $315 million (₹2,583 crore) by December 2023, marking a substantial 144% increase from the previous year's $129 million (₹1,057 crore), according to The Walt Disney Company's quarterly financial report released on Thursday.
India played host exclusively to the 2023 edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup, featuring 10 teams competing in 48 matches from October 5 to November 19, 2023. Disney Star, which held the ICC TV and digital media rights until 2023, aired the matches across its Star network of channels and streamed them for free on its Disney+ Hotstar app, aiming to rival Reliance Industries-backed JioCinema's free streaming of IPL cricket matches in 2023.
Despite a significant revenue surge in the sports segment, with Star India reporting a 71% increase to $399 million from October to December 2023 compared to $233 million the previous year, the segment's operating loss surged to $315 million during the period.
The rise in operating loss was attributed to the broadcasting of the ICC Cricket World Cup, which incurred higher programming and production costs due to increased average costs per match and more matches aired. However, revenue growth from advertising was notable, driven by increased units delivered and higher average viewership, although offset by decreased rates.
While Walt Disney Company's overall sports revenue saw a 4% rise to $4.8 billion, the company's overall sports operating loss in Q1 FY24 declined by 37% to $103 million from $164 million in the previous fiscal year.
Management highlighted that Disney's sports operating income improved compared to the prior year, primarily due to ESPN's performance, despite lower results at Star India resulting from higher rights costs associated with airing the ICC Cricket World Cup.
The ICC Cricket World Cup, held once every four years, was estimated to have generated between ₹2,000 crore and ₹2,200 crore in combined advertising revenue across TV and digital platforms, significantly surpassing the Rs 1,350 crore generated in the 2019 edition. Australia emerged victorious in the 2023 tournament, which saw India host the event exclusively for the first time after a gap of 12 years, having previously co-hosted with various countries in 1987, 1996, and 2011.

Disney&rsquo;s CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that the company is committed to the Indian market despite challenges faced by Hotstar, its streaming service. In an earnings call, Iger said that Disney &ldquo;would like to stay&rdquo; in India and is actively exploring options. While Hotstar lost 28 lakh subscribers in the last quarter, bringing the total loss to about 2.3 crore in a year, Disney+ globally added nearly 70 lakh subscribers, surpassing 15 crore, including Hotstar, reported Hindustan Times.&nbsp; Despite challenges in the streaming sector, Disney&rsquo;s cable TV business in India remains profitable. A glimmer of hope for Disney lies in the expectation of a surge in Hotstar&rsquo;s subscriber count in the next quarter, currently standing at 3.76 crore subscribers. Hotstar has seen a rebound, attracting back numerous subscribers and non-paying users, during the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup. It has been offering free streaming on mobile devices. There are also indications of a potential deal with Reliance to sell the India business, aiming to mitigate losses. Iger revealed plans to cut an additional $2 billion in costs to narrow streaming losses, projecting streaming profitability in about a year.
Disney&rsquo;s streaming service, Hotstar, has been facing stiff competition from other streaming services in India. The Indian streaming market is dominated by Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and local players such as Zee5, Voot, and Sony Liv. Hotstar&rsquo;s market share has been declining, and it has been losing subscribers to its competitors.&nbsp;

As per Walt Disney's regulatory filing its sports business in India reported an operating loss of $444 million for the nine-month period ended July 1.&nbsp;
Earlier media reports claimed that once the deal is finalised, a few Reliance owned media units will merge with Disney Sta and the acquisition is likely to be declared by the companies next month.

Though Disney Star has seen declining subscriber numbers after losing the IPL streaming rights, it hasn&rsquo;t ceded the entire cricket business, securing the television rights through 2027. Last year it agreed to license the TV rights for International Cricket Council men&rsquo;s matches to ZEE Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. for four years, with Disney+ Hotstar retaining the digital rights.

The combined per match value only from Indian TV and digital rights per game is Rs 107.5 crore.
Package A, which is Indian sub-continent TV rights for 410 IPL matches from the year 2023 to 2027 has been sold for Rs 57.5 crore per game.
Package B, which is Indian sub-continent digital rights was sold for Rs 50 crore per game being offered by Viacom18. The per match value of digital rights is grabbing attention as it is an incremental growth of 51 percent over and above the base price.
The base price for TV was Rs 49 crore while digital rights were pegged at Rs 33 crore.
Package C has the right to broadcast 98 out of 410 games for five years in the non-exclusive digital category. Package D is overseas rights for TV and digital.
BCCI has earned a staggering Rs 46,000 crore from these two packages, which is two and half times more than the 2018 auction value of Rs 16,347 crore.

Uday Shankar is the former president of The Walt Disney Company Asia Pacific and former Chairman of Star and Disney India. Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), the sovereign wealth fund of the State of Qatar, is an investor in Bodhi Tree Systems.
