Dinesh Karthik on Saturday finally brought the curtains down on his cricketing career as he announced his retirement from all forms of the game. Interestingly, June 1 also happens to be his birth date.
India wicketkeeper-batter took to social media to announce his decision via an emotional post. DK wrote, "Having given plenty of thought for sometime now, I officially announce my retirement and put my playing days behind me as I square up for the new challenges that lie ahead."

Karthik had already made it clear before IPL 2024 that the recently concluded season of the cash-rich league would be his last. His final appearance was RCB's Eliminator against the Rajasthan Royals. DK had then said that he would decide on international retirement soon and the 39-year-old finally took the call.
The Tamil Nadu man has a reasonable stint at international career too, considering his career clashed with that of MS Dhoni as a wicketkeeper-batsman.
He has played 26 Tests after making his debut in 2004 against Australia, scoring 1025 runs and effecting 57 catches and 6 stumpings. He played his last Test in 2018.
In the ODIs, he scored 1752 runs in 94 matches between 2004 and 2019, and managed 64 catches and 7 stumpings.
Karthik's last match for India was the T20I against Bangladesh in 2022 after making his debut in the shortest format in 2006. He scored 686 runs from 60 T20Is and effected 30 catches and 8 stumpings.
One of the most experienced wicketkeeper-batters in the IPL, Karthik has represented six teams in the league.
He started off with Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in 2008 before moving to Kings XI Punjab in 2011. He spent the following two seasons with Mumbai Indians before going back to Delhi in 2014 for a price tag of a whopping Rs 12.5 crore.
Royal Challengers signed him in 2015 for Rs 10.5 crore and he then played for Gujarat Lions in 2016 and 2017 before spending four seasons with the Kolkata Knight Riders.
He led the Kolkata side to the IPL playoffs in 2018 and they finished fifth in the points table in 2019.
Ahead of the IPL 2022, Karthik was released by KKR and was bought by RCB for the second time for Rs 5.5 crore. He had a stellar 2022 for RCB while mainly playing the role of a finisher.
Karthik made 330 runs in 16 matches at an average of 55 and an explosive strike rate of 183.33 that year, a guiding force in RCB's march to the playoffs.
That run earned Karthik a berth in the India squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 held in Australia but he could not shine as expected as Virat Kohli's side bowed out of semifinals after a defeat against eventual champions England.
But by then, Karthik had also made a name for himself as a commentator with his sprightly, technique-laden approach.
DK was in stellar form in IPL 2024 and smashed 326 runs in 15 matches at an average of 36.22. What stood out was his strike rate of over 187, which was instrumental in RCB reaching the playoffs.

While Karthik hasn't yet officially announced his retirement from the IPL, he did drop broad hints throughout the tournament that the ongoing season would be his last for his franchise.

Despite not making an official announcement, Karthik implied during the tournament that this current season would likely be his final one with his franchise in the IPL.
Dinesh Karthik played in 257 games in the IPL, starting his career with Delhi Daredevils in the first season of the tournament. He played for six teams in the IPL and also captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the playoffs in IPL 2018. &nbsp;The batter accumulated 4842 runs with an average of 26.32 and a strike rate of 135.36.
He ranks second in the league for wicketkeeping, with 174 dismissals, including 137 catches and 37 stumpings, just behind MS Dhoni. Dhoni leads with a total of 190 dismissals, comprising 148 catches and 42 stumpings.
Karthik and Mumbai Indians legend Rohit Sharma are tied for second place in the list of most capped players in IPL history with 257 T20s. Dhoni, who has not yet declared his retirement from IPL, is leading with 264 matches and more to come.

There's no hiding from the fact that the umpiring standard in IPL 2024 has been poor, to say the least, and it was on display once again in RCB vs RR Eliminator on Wednesday.
After dismissing Rajat Patidar, Avesh Khan trapped Dinesh Karthik in front of the stumps on the very next ball and the on-field umpire gave it out.&nbsp;
However, DK challenged the decision by using DRS. The Snickometer showed two spikes but the first one was clearly from the bat hitting the pad. However, the 3rd umpire felt otherwise and asked the on-field umpire to reverse his decision.
As Karthik survived, fans and experts couldn't wrap their heads around the decision. Even Rajasthan Royals' head coach Kumar Sangakkara was left shocked.
"The bat has hit the pad, the bat has not hit the ball," said Sunil Gavaskar during commentary. Ravi Shastri too called the decision 'an absolute shocker'.
Wasim Jaffar and Michael Vaughan may have contrasting views on almost all topics but they too found this decision shocking.
"There was no bat. If there was, Dinesh would have taken DRS straight away," wrote former India cricketer Irfan Pathan on social media platform 'X'.
Karthik though couldn't make much use of the lifeline and was eventually out for a 13-ball-11 to Avesh Khan only.

Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, who has been in phenomenal form in this IPL, has not given up on his dream to play for India again and would do "everything he can to be in that flight" to the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies next month.
Karthik, who will turn 39 by the time the World Cup kickstarts on June 1, was also part of the last edition of the T20I World Cup in Australia in 2022, which was also his last appearance for Team India.

With Karthik also emerging as a contender, the wicketkeeper slot will be a hotly-contested one for which the Team India think tank may pick two at the most.
Making a comeback from a near-fatal accident, Rishabh Pant has also showed positive intent while captaining Delhi Capitals, and Sanju Samson (Rajasthan Royals), Ishan Kishan (Mumbai Indians), KL Rahul (Lucknow Super Giants) are also in the fray.
Karthik said he would respect whatever the Big Three -- coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar -- decide.

Karthik mainly comes in as a cover for Lions batting consultant Ian Bell, who is currently on Big Bash League duty with Melbourne Renegades.
He will be working alongside head coach Neil Killeen along with assistant coaches Richard Dawson and Carl Hopkinson, while former English spinner Graeme Swann will also be a part of the coaching team as a mentor.
