The death toll from the crash of the Bangladesh Air Force training fighter jet into a school building in Dhaka rose to 27 as more people succumbed to their injuries, authorities said on Tuesday.
The F-7 BGI aircraft, a training fighter jet manufactured in China, experienced a "mechanical fault" moments after takeoff and crashed into the two-storey building of Milestone School and College at Diabari in Dhaka's Uttara area on Monday.
&ldquo;The toll is now 27, and 25 of them are children,&rdquo; Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus&rsquo;s special adviser, Saidur Rahman, told reporters.
He said many of the dead were under the age of 12. Twenty bodies have been handed over to their families so far.
Authorities fear the toll could rise.
"We are continuing all possible efforts to provide medical care. However, the condition of some patients remains extremely critical," Rahman said at the specialised National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS) in the capital.
About 170 people were injured in the crash.
Wails of despair and pain reverberate at hospitals where patients were treated with burn injuries.
The school authorities and hospital staff said several guardians were still frantically looking for their missing children, running from one hospital to another.
&ldquo;Dozens of ambulances were carrying the wounded to nearby hospitals, but the number is so high the facilities could not admit and treat them properly due to lack of rooms for burn injuries,&rdquo; a school teacher said.
Anxious parents and relatives waited outside the emergency wards with shock, uncertainty, fear and grief.
The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Mohammad Towkir Islam, was among those killed in the crash.
The government has declared a state day of mourning for Tuesday in memory of those affected by the crash.
A statement from the Chief Advisor's Office on Monday announced that the national flag will be flown at half-mast at all government, semi-government, autonomous institutions and educational institutions across the country.
Special prayers will be organised at all places of religious worship in the country for the injured and the dead.
A high-level investigation committee has been formed by the Bangladesh Air Force to determine the cause of the accident.
The defence ministry&rsquo;s Inter Service Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) in its last statement on Monday said pilot Hossain tried his best to fly the craft to a desolate place to evade any major casualty but failed.
&ldquo;All the wounded people are being quickly transferred to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) and other nearby facilities with the help of air force helicopter and ambulances for treatment,&rdquo; the ISPR said.
The crash was one of the deadliest in Bangladesh&rsquo;s history.
In the last such aviation tragedy in 1984, a total of 49 people were killed when a passenger jet crashed as it attempted to land during a severe rainstorm at the Dhaka airport.&nbsp;

A Bangladesh Air Force training fighter jet crashed into a school building in Dhaka shortly after takeoff on Monday, killing at least 20 people, mostly students, and injuring 171, in one of the deadliest aviation accidents in the country's history.
The F-7 BGI aircraft, a training fighter jet manufactured in China, experienced a "mechanical fault" moments after takeoff and crashed into the two-storey building of Milestone School and College at Diabari in Dhaka's Uttara area, officials said.
The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Mohammad Towkir Islam, was killed in the crash.
&ldquo;Twenty people, including Flight Lieutenant Toukir Islam, have so far been killed and 171 others injured in the crash,&rdquo; according to an updated statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) - the media wing of the military.
The pilot attempted to steer the aircraft away from densely populated areas. However, despite his efforts, the aircraft tragically crashed into the two-storey building of the school, said the ISPR.
The jet crashed "due to a mechanical fault" (the details of which will be informed after investigation) after taking off from the Bangladesh Air Force Base AK Khandaker in Kurmitola at 01:06 pm as part of a regular training, the statement said.
"All injured individuals are being promptly transported to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) and nearby hospitals for necessary treatment, with assistance from Air Force helicopters and ambulances," it said.
It said that the chief of army staff and senior military officers rushed to the crash site where rescuers, including firefighters, army troops, police and elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), continued their rescue operations.
A high-level investigation committee has been formed by the Bangladesh Air Force to determine the cause of the accident, the statement added.
In New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep shock at the loss of lives in the crash. "Deeply shocked and saddened at the loss of lives, many of them young students, in a tragic air crash in Dhaka. Our hearts go out to the bereaved families," Modi said on X.
"We pray for the swift recovery of those injured. India stands in solidarity with Bangladesh and is ready to extend all possible support and assistance," he added.
Director General of Fire Service and Civil Defence Brigadier General Zahed Kamal earlier told reporters here that the crash and the subsequent fire killed 19 people. At least 50 others were critically injured, he added.
He said that rescuers recovered 19 bodies from the school compound alone while the rescue operation was underway.
Earlier, Md Sayedur Rahman, the special assistant to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus for the Health Ministry, said that injured people, mostly students, were being treated at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka Medical College Hospital, and the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS).
According to doctors, eight of the injured were in critical condition.
"The number of injured people being brought to our facility is rising,&rdquo; a doctor at NIBPS told reporters.
Fire service officials earlier said the jet crashed atop a building of the school with a big bang and immediately caught fire.
According to police, firefighting units, ambulances, and air force helicopters rushed to the scene soon after the crash.
A teacher of the school, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that security personnel were putting bodies in body bags to be taken to Dhaka&rsquo;s combined military hospital from the damaged building, which housed classes from one to seven.
"Dozens of ambulances were carrying the wounded to nearby hospitals,&rdquo; she said.
The National Burn Institute in the capital said they were treating 18 people, mostly students, some with critical conditions.
The interim government has declared a one-day state mourning on July 22 when the national flag will be flown at half-mast across Bangladesh and its missions abroad.
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus expressed shock and sorrow over the casualties caused by the crash.
"I am deeply saddened by the casualties caused by the heartbreaking accident involving a Bangladesh Air Force jet at the Milestone School and College campus," he said in a statement.
Fahim Hossain, an eleventh-grade student, said that the jet crashed right in front of his eyes &ndash; just 10 feet ahead of him.
"It hit the ground floor of a two-storey building around 1:15 pm, where classes for the primary section were taking place," Fahim told The Daily Star.
The plane crashed in front of the classrooms used by class 3 and class 4 students.
Recounting the experience, a teacher who was injured in the incident said students were lining up to leave the school just as the final bell rang when the flames erupted.
"There was no warning. Before we even understood what was happening, there were flames all around. Visibility dropped instantly. All I could see was fire, then smoke," the teacher said. "Both of my hands were burnt. I'm also experiencing breathing difficulties, and my face and ears are scorched." Witnesses said many wounded people were carried away by spontaneous volunteers and army troops from the crash site, even in rickshaws and tricycle vans.
"We transported some of the injured with burns onto rickshaws and vans. Their clothes were ripped apart, torn, and some even were walking towards rescue vehicles with burn injuries on their bodies," said Nuruzzaman Mridha, a teacher of the school.
The crash was one of the deadliest aviation accidents in Bangladesh in several decades, Bangla-language daily Prothom Alo reported.
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul said that today's crash was "a great tragedy in our national life on an unprecedented scale".
Three platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed at the crash site to assist the law enforcement and rescue operations, according to a BGB press release.

Bangladesh interim government of Muhammad Yunus on Thursday dismissed the idea of any emerging alliance between Dhaka, Beijing and Islamabad, saying the recent meeting between the three countries was not &ldquo;political&rdquo;.
&ldquo;We are not forming any alliance,&rdquo; foreign affairs adviser M Touhid Hossain told reporters at the foreign ministry, when asked for comments about the trilateral meeting in China&rsquo;s Kunming on June 19.
&ldquo;It was a meeting at the official level, not at the political level,&rdquo; Hossain said, adding that there was &ldquo;no element of formation of any alliance&rdquo;.
Asked if the meeting was intended to sideline India, Hossain asserted, &ldquo;It is certainly not (about) targeting a third-party (which) I can assure you.&rdquo; The foreign ministry in an earlier statement said representatives from Bangladesh, China and Pakistan held an &ldquo;informal trilateral meeting&rdquo; on the sidelines of two Beijing-sponsored regional events, the China-South Asia Exposition and the China-South Asia Cooperation Forum in Kunming.
China and Pakistan issued separate statements on the meeting while Beijing said the three countries held &ldquo;extensive discussions on trilateral cooperation&rdquo; and agreed to move forward based on &ldquo;good-neighbourliness, mutual trust, equality, openness, inclusiveness and shared development&rdquo;.
Islamabad, on the other hand, described the gathering as the &ldquo;inaugural meeting of the Bangladesh-China-Pakistan trilateral mechanism&rdquo; while both the countries said the meeting decided to form a &ldquo;joint working group&rdquo;.
The Bangladesh statement, however, did not acknowledge or mention the decision over the formation of the working group.
Bangladesh&rsquo;s former acting foreign secretary Ruhul Alam Siddique represented Dhaka in the meeting with Chinese vice foreign minister Sun Weidong and Pakistani additional foreign secretary Imran Ahmed Siddiqui, while Pakistan&rsquo;s foreign secretary Amna Baloch briefly joined the meeting virtually.
Asked whether Dhaka rejected any characterisation pointed out in the Beijing and Islamabad statements, the adviser said &ldquo;there is no need to deny anything&rdquo; but emphasised that it was &ldquo;not anything big and not something structured&rdquo;.
Hossain said that the discussions mainly focused on connectivity and related areas, noting, &ldquo;If there is any further progress, you will know that (but) there is not much scope to speculate&rdquo;.
He said Dhaka did not have any reservations in joining any such meeting like the Kunming one with other countries, citing a &ldquo;hypothetical&rdquo; example involving India.
&ldquo;If India wants to have such a meeting among Bangladesh, India and Nepal, Dhaka will remain interested in doing the meeting the next day,&rdquo; the adviser said, but added that the Dhaka-New Delhi relations currently were going through a phase of &ldquo;readjustment&rdquo;.
Hossain, however, said there is no lack of goodwill from Dhaka&rsquo;s side to that end.
&ldquo;Look, let us acknowledge the truth. The level of deep relationship between India and the previous government (of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina) had, and the kind of relationship India had established, the current relationship with us is not like that one,&rdquo; he said, when asked what he meant by &ldquo;readjustment&rdquo;.
Ties between New Delhi and Dhaka deteriorated after the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in August last year in a massive student-led protest.
She fled to India following the toppling of her Awami League government, and Yunus took over as the head of the interim government.
In April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Yunus for the first time after Hasina&rsquo;s ouster and flagged concerns over the attacks on minorities, including Hindus and conveyed that any rhetoric that vitiated the environment was best avoided.

Police in Dhaka fired tear gas on Saturday to disperse supporters of Bangladesh's opposition party who were holding sit-in protests at all the entry points to the capital to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by ailing former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, has been protesting over who should oversee the next general election, expected to be held early next year.
Hasina hopes to return to power for a fourth consecutive term and says the election should be held under her government's supervision, as specified in the constitution.
But Zia&rsquo;s party and its allies accuse Hasina of vote rigging in 2018 and say she must step down to allow the installation of a non-party caretaker government to ensure a free and fair vote.
Zia and Hasina are archrivals and have led the country at different times since 1991.
The United States, the European Union and the United Nations have urged both sides to demonstrate restraint and work toward holding a credible election.

Eleven people were killed and dozens more injured in Bangladesh's capital after an explosion inside an office building in a bustling commercial district, police said.

The blast shook the fourth and fifth floors of a seven-storey building in Gulistan, a major hub for wholesale goods in the capital Dhaka, shortly before 5 pm local time (1100 GMT).
Police inspector Bacchu Mia told AFP that at least 45 people were taken to hospital for treatment, of whom 11 had died.
"Two of the dead are women," he said. "The rest are injured and being treated."
No fire broke out in the building but more than 150 firefighters were at the site to assist in rescue efforts, a fire services spokesperson said.
The cause of the blast was still being investigated, he said.
A middle-aged man in a blood-soaked shirt told reporters he had been injured in the blast, which shattered windows and damaged a wall of the building.
"There were people lying on the floor. I escaped by climbing out from the window," he said.
