A new study, published in the journal of the American Academy of Neurology revealed that people with multiple sclerosis, combined with depression, are at a greater risk of death within the next decade. The subjects with both these conditions were compared with those who had just one or neither of the conditions.
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic condition that involves the central nervous system. In this disorder, the immune system attacks a protective layer around nerve fibers called myelin. The study found that people suffering from multiple sclerosis as well as depression have an increased risk of developing a vascular disease that can cause heart attacks or stroke.&nbsp;The study involved 12,251 people with multiple sclerosis and 72,572 people who did not have the disorder. Three separate subject groups were observed

The results revealed that for group a, the mortality rate was the highest at 10.6. For group b, the mortality rate was at 3.6&nbsp;and for group c, the mortality rate was at 2.5.
Researchers added that further studies need to be conducted to find out whether treating depression in people with multiple sclerosis could reduce the risk of vascular disease over time.

For the study, the team included 33 systematic reviews, 29 randomised control trials and 21 observational studies.
Researchers found the strongest evidence around the use of ketamine to treat both major depression and bipolar depression, with symptoms reduced as quickly as one to four hours after a single treatment that lasted up to two weeks.
They also observed that single or multiple doses of ketamine resulted in large reductions in suicidal thoughts. The effect lasted on average three days and up to one week.

Researchers used data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) to examine how health-related factors and social determinants impacted the prevalence of depressive symptoms during the initial lockdown&nbsp;in&nbsp;March 2020.
The team found that 43 percent of adults aged 50 or older experienced moderate or high levels of depressive symptoms at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic and that increased over time.

In order to understand the aftermath of the sedentary lifestyle, more than 3,000 participants from all 50 states of the USA responded to a survey. The participants self-reported how much time they spent doing activities, like sitting, looking at screens and exercising, both before and after the onset of COVID.
Survey data showed participants who were meeting the US Physical Activity Guidelines, that is, nearly 3-5 hours of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week before the pandemic decreased their physical activity by 32% after the pandemic. The same participants reported feeling more depressed, anxious and lonely during the lockdowns.

Research conducted at the University of South Australia, found that full-time workers who work in a toxic work environment and are employed by organisations that fail to prioritise their employees' mental health have a 300% increased risk of being diagnosed with depression.
Additionally, the study found that in such workplaces, long working hours (41-48 hours a week and upwards of 55 hours a week) were detrimental to employees' <a href="https://www.editorji.com/story/askthedoctor-dealing-with-mental-health-matters-in-covid-times-1619794303882" target="_blank">mental health</a>, even when workers felt engaged in what they were doing. The research was done with 1,084 employees working in New South Wales, Western Australia and Southern Australia.
According to the study, a workplace usually becomes toxic when the toxicity starts flowing from the top, with poor management practices, priorities and values. Evidence shows that companies who fail to reward or acknowledge their employees for hard work, impose unreasonable demands on workers and do not give them autonomy, are placing their staff at a much greater risk of depression.
As per the findings, male participants were more likely to develop major depression symptoms as a result of PSC than the females in the study.

It is believed that the endless anxieties&nbsp;associated with the pandemic, complete disruption of real-time social connections as well as&nbsp;a near-blurred sameness&nbsp;of each&nbsp;day are all to blame.&nbsp;
Interestingly, the term languishing was coined&nbsp;in 2002&nbsp;by&nbsp;psychologist Corey Keyes who defined it as&nbsp;&lsquo;people who are not mentally ill but are not flourishing.&rsquo; In a 2002&nbsp;paper, he&nbsp;wrote that languishing may be understood as a life of quiet despair that parallels accounts of people who describe themselves and life as &ldquo;hollow,&rdquo; &ldquo;empty,&rdquo; &ldquo;a shell,&rdquo; and &ldquo;void.&rdquo;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Thanks to Covid-19, this &lsquo;blah&rsquo; feeling is just our life now.&nbsp;So,&nbsp;what can we do?&nbsp;
The NYT article suggests that trying to accomplish small but achievable projects may help.&nbsp;Go for things that engage your mind and take away your attention from the crisis. This could mean&nbsp;solving a puzzle or even&nbsp;watching a TV show with a riveting storyline.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Experts also recommend journaling your thoughts and feelings. You could write a&nbsp;gratitude&nbsp;letter&nbsp;or&nbsp;just&nbsp;make a list of things you feel grateful about.&nbsp;&nbsp;
