New account additions surged to 31 lakh for the month, with an average monthly addition of 31 lakh accounts throughout FY24. In March, Central Depository Services Limited or CDSL continued to gain market share in terms of total demat accounts and also saw an increase in market share on a month-on-month basis. At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), active clients increased for the ninth consecutive month, with the number of active clients rising 1.8 percent MoM to 4.08 crore in March this year. Key brokers in FY24&nbsp; In FY24, the performance of key discount brokers presented a mixed picture. Zerodha saw a 0.9 percent month-on-month (MoM) rise in its client count to 73 lakh, accompanied by a 20 basis points decrease in market share to 17.9 percent. Upstox reported a 0.6 percent MoM increase in its client count to 25 lakh, with a 10 basis points drop in market share to 6.2 percent. Meanwhile, Groww witnessed a 3.8 percent MoM surge in its client count to 95 lakh, coupled with a 50 basis points increase in market share to 23.4 percent.

Come December 31, 2023, individual investors in mutual funds and holders of demat accounts are facing a crucial deadline set by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). By this date, it's mandatory for account holders to nominate their assets or opt out of the nomination process.
Failure to nominate their holdings by the December 31 deadline could result in SEBI freezing withdrawals from these accounts. This means affected investors won't be able to access their funds in mutual funds or conduct trades through their demat accounts. However, investors who have already submitted nomination details need not resubmit them.

The importance of nomination in mutual fund investing lies in ensuring a clear allocation of assets in the event of the holder's demise. Without a nominee, legal procedures may prolong and potentially inflate costs for the transfer of investments.
Adding a nominee to a demat account can be accomplished through the following steps:

<li>Access the official NSDL portal.</li>
<li>Click on the 'Nominate Online' option on the homepage.</li>
<li>Provide necessary details like DP ID, client ID, PAN, and OTP on the subsequent page.</li>
<li>Choose between 'I wish to Nominate' or 'I do not wish to nominate.'</li>
<li>If nominating, enter the nominee's details as prompted.</li>
<li>Ensure the eSign Service Provider's page is verified and proceed.</li>
<li>Complete the process by verifying the OTP. For mutual fund folios, up to three nominees can be added, with the option to specify the percentage share for each nominee. Otherwise, assets will be equally distributed among the nominees.</li>

Indian capital markets saw a surge in the number of new investors, with the opening of over 31 lakh demat accounts in August. August marked the highest number of additions in 19 months.
As per the data from the Central Depository Service and National Securities Depository, in July 29.7 lakh demat accounts were opened and a year ago only 21 lakh accounts were formed. The total demat tally crossed 12.66 crore, up 2.51%&nbsp; from a month ago and 25.83% from a year ago.

This addition of new demat accounts comes despite a drop in the benchmark indices during August. However, many investors turned their attentions towards mid and small-cap indices, investing in fundamentally strong but undervalued stocks, particularly in sectors experiencing positive business cycle shifts. In August, both mid and small-cap indices reached an all-time highs.&nbsp;
Moneycontrol quoted some analysts and said that growing optimism and confidence in the financial market, coupled with greater awareness of equities as an asset class, have contributed to the rising number of demat accounts. The report also mentioned that a surge in IPO listings, which averaged around 35% to 40% returns, attracted many new participants.

In the month of July, a whopping 30 lakh new demat accounts were opened with the two leading depositories, Central Depository Services Limited (CDSL) and National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). This figure is the highest since January 2022 and represents a significant 50% increase compared to the previous 12-month average of 20 lakh account openings.

The total demat accounts have reached a new high of 12.35 crore, reflecting the increasing participation of retail investors in the stock market.

The month of June witnessed a significant surge in the opening of demat accounts, as new investors flocked to capitalize on the attractive returns offered by local equity markets.
Data from the Central Depository Service and National Securities Depository revealed that over 2.36 million demat accounts were opened in June, marking the highest addition in the past 13 months.
The total number of demat accounts now stands at a remarkable 120.51 million, reflecting a 2% increase from the previous month and an impressive 24.41% surge compared to the same period last year.
This surge in account openings is a testament to the growing interest of investors in the equity markets.
The resurgence of the equity markets in the June quarter of FY24 has been remarkable. Both the Nifty50 and Sensex indices reached new milestones, with the Nifty50 crossing the 19,500 points mark for the first time. The Sensex and Nifty have recorded gains of over 14.2 percent and 15 percent respectively since 28 March.&nbsp;
Market analysts have attributed this market surge to multiple factors, including increased trading volumes, order flow, and client additions.
The overall positive momentum indicates the growing confidence and participation of investors in the market.
Analysts believe that as long as the market remains resilient, this trend of increased demat account openings is expected to continue.
While the surge in new demat account openings reflects growing investor interest, some analysts urge caution. They emphasize the importance of carefully assessing investment choices, particularly with potentially overvalued small-cap stocks.

May saw the largest increase in new demat account openings in nine months, driven by a recovery in the overall market and record derivatives volumes. As per a mint report, the overall number of demat accounts stood at 118.15 million, up 2.15 million or 32% from April.&nbsp;
This was the largest monthly growth since August when new account additions rocketed up 73% or 2.55 million, said the report citing depository data published by Motilal Oswal Financial Services.&nbsp;
As of May 31,&nbsp; 86.16 million accounts were held by Central Depository Services (India) Ltd, and 31.99 million accounts were held by National Securities Depository Ltd.
The market regulator has its work cut out for it trying to safeguard novice investors given the rush for demat accounts that goes along with the influx of retail capital into the riskier futures and options (F&amp;O) segment.
Brokers are required by Sebi to inform investors that nine out of ten traders who bet on Nifty and Bank Nifty options lose money.

Demat accounts exceeded 118.16 million, an increase of 1.8% from the previous month and a significant 25% increase from the same time last year.
But, only 1.60 million demat accounts were opened in April, given that market was quite volatile that time around, which was the lowest number since December 2020, according to data from NSDL and CDSL.
The increase in demat account openings is attributed by analysts to retail investors' renewed interest in the Indian equity markets as a result of the rally seen over the previous two months. The Indian markets enjoyed a rebound in optimism after a period of sluggishness brought by global attitudes.
The Reserve Bank of India's attitude on the interest rate situation is cited by analysts as a catalyst for this trajectory, as per Money Control.&nbsp;
