A new analysis shows that pollution levels remained above permissible limits in Lucknow and Delhi despite lockdown-induced dips. The study by a climate communications initiative Climate Trends says researchers compared the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) air quality data for Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai and Kolkata over the three months of March, April and May in 2019 &ndash; when there was no lockdown and 2020 and 2021 &ndash; when there was complete lockdown in these cities.
Though Delhi&rsquo;s average PM 2.5 concentration for the three months dipped from 95.6 ug/m3 in 2019 to 69 ug/m3 in 2020, it went up to 95 ug/m3 in 2021.The study revealed that except Mumbai, all cities showed a dip in the average PM 2.5 levels during the three months in 2020. Mumbai, however, has seen a gradual increase in pollution over the years, the study revealed.
The safe upper limit for PM 2.5 (particulate matter measuring less than 2.5 microns) as prescribed by the CPCB is 40 micrograms per cubic metre (ug/m3).

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday extended the lockdown by another week till May 24 to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the national capital. Delhi recorded 6,430 new Covid-19 cases and 337 fatalities on Saturday while the positivity rate dipped to 11.32%. Kejriwal asserted that the cases are &ldquo;slowly and steadily&rdquo; reducing in Delhi but urged citizens to continue following Covid-appropriate behaviour. Delhi for the second consecutive day, recorded less than 10,000 cases in a day. Metro services will remain suspended till further orders.

Arrested Qaeda suspects planned bomb delivery to Kashmir: reports

Reports: Al Qaeda suspects, who were nabbed by NIA teams from Kerala and West Bengal, had plans to travel to Jammu and Kashmir for weapons delivery&nbsp;

Al Qaeda suspects, who were arrested from Kerala and West Bengal, had plans to travel to Jammu and Kashmir for weapons delivery, multiple reports quoting unnamed National Investigation Agency officials said on Saturday. The NIA&nbsp;officials said that the arrested men where in touch with their Pakistani handler named Hamza&nbsp;and&nbsp;had amassed potassium nitrate from firecrackers bought in large amount.&nbsp; Reports also said the arrested men planned attack on several vital installation in Delhi-NCR and other parts of the country with an aim to kill innocent people and strike terror in their minds.

New Delhi: Al Qaeda terrorists, who were nabbed early Saturday by NIA teams from Kerala and West Bengal, had plans to travel to Jammu and Kashmir for weapons delivery along with home-made explosives for their other associates even as they continued to take orders from their Pakistan-based handlers, reports quoting&nbsp;NIA officials said on Saturday.
The revelations came as the NIA busted the inter-state terror module after it carried out searches at multiple locations in Murshidabad and Ernakulum. The National Investigation Agency arrested nine Al Qaeda terrorists -- three from Kerala and six from West Bengal.
An NIA official related to the probe told IANS, "These terrorists were planning to go to Kashmir for weapons delivery to their handlers." They had amassed potassium nitrate from firecrackers bought in large amount.
"During the raids the agency got huge cache of firecrackers. They bought the firecrackers to hide procurement of huge amount of potassium required to make the IEDs," a senior NIA official related to the probe told IANS.
The official said that the arrested were touch in with their Pakistan based handler Hamza. They planned attack on several vital installation in Delhi-NCR and other parts of the country with an aim to kill innocent people and strike terror in their minds.
