AAP leader and Delhi Assembly Leader of Opposition (LoP) Atishi, has termed the suspension of 21 Aam Aadmi Party MLAs as an attack on democracy and urged Speaker Vijender Gupta to ensure fairness and protect democratic values.&nbsp;
In a letter to the Speaker on Friday, she called the action unjust and a severe blow to democratic principles.
"I am writing this letter with great pain and sorrow. The biggest strength of democracy is its fairness and equality. But whatever happened in the Delhi Assembly in the past few days is not only an injustice to the opposition MLAs but also a severe blow to democratic values," Atishi stated in her letter.
She alleged that "no action" was taken against any MLA from the ruling party. "On 25 February 2025, during the address of Lt Governor, MLAs of the ruling party raised slogans of 'Modi-Modi,' while the opposition MLAs raised slogans of 'Jai Bhim,' respecting the views of Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. It is very unfortunate that no action was taken against any MLA of the ruling party, but 21 MLAs of the opposition were suspended from the House for 3 days for raising the slogan 'Jai Bhim'," she added.
Atishi further claimed that the "injustice did not stop" there. She stated that when the suspended MLAs attempted to protest peacefully in front of Mahatma Gandhi&rsquo;s statue within the assembly premises, they were stopped 200 meters before the gate and "were prevented from entering the assembly premises."
She described the incident as an "insult" not only to the MLAs but also to the people's mandate. "You are the guardian of this assembly. It is the duty of the guardian to do equal justice to all the MLAs, whether they are from the ruling party or the opposition. I urge you to protect the democratic values and ensure that no MLA is deprived of his constitutional rights," Atishi wrote.
The controversy erupted on February 25 when tensions flared in the Delhi Assembly. Speaker Vijender Gupta suspended AAP MLAs, including Atishi and Gopal Rai, amid an uproar before the tabling of the CAG report.

Calling the move "unprecedented," Atishi questioned the Speaker&rsquo;s decision to bar elected representatives from entering the Assembly complex.&nbsp;
"They are saying that the Speaker has ordered that your MLA should be stopped at the gate of Delhi Vidhan Sabha. They have been removed for a three-day sitting as per the orders. But never in the history of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha, or even the Parliament of the country, has an elected representative been denied entry in such a manner," she said.

She further criticized the deployment of police to enforce the restriction. "If an MLA is suspended, their entry into the House is restricted. However, stopping them 50 meters away from the gate using police barricades is unheard of in the history of any legislative body in the country," she remarked. Despite the suspension, she asserted that AAP would continue to fight back.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders defended the Speaker&rsquo;s decision. BJP MLA Satish Upadhyay stated, "The House will run by law. If they (the opposition) create ruckus and anarchy there (in the House), then the Speaker will take a decision. The decision taken by the Speaker is final." MLA Ravindra Singh Negi accused AAP of disregarding constitutional norms, saying, "You (opposition) are roaming around with the picture of Baba Saheb Ambedkar, but you should follow the Constitution as told by him... Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma also criticized AAP MLAs, stating, "They (AAP) MLAs cannot raise slogans when the LG is addressing the House. If they break the laws like this, it is not good."

She cited examples from other legislative bodies to argue against the move. "If you see Delhi Legislative Assembly, Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, elected legislators are never stopped. Even when suspended in Parliament, an elected parliamentarian is never stopped. Therefore, protests often take place in Parliament even after being suspended under the Gandhi statue. Often even in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, when the Bharatiya Janata Party was in opposition, they used to protest under the statue of Gandhi ji under the statue of Ambedkar."
Reaffirming her stance, she added, "We are suspended from the House. Being suspended from the House does not mean that we are suspended from the Assembly premises. We are elected legislators. We have the right to go to the Assembly premises. How are we being prevented from going to the Assembly premises?"
The situation remains tense as AAP continues to protest against the suspension and entry restrictions, accusing the BJP-led government of undermining democratic principles.

She alleged that the BJP dispensation had removed Ambedkar's portraits from the chief minister's office in both the Delhi Secretariat and the assembly.

Speaking on the motion of confidence, Kejriwal asserted that even if the BJP wins this year's Lok Sabha polls, the AAP will "liberate" the country from the saffron party in the 2029 elections.
The Delhi chief minister, who is also the AAP convenor, said his government has a majority in the House but it needed to bring the motion of confidence because the BJP was trying to poach party MLAs and topple his government.
The House later passed the motion of confidence through a voice vote, with 54 of the AAP's 62 MLAs present during the voting.
Kejriwal also asserted that no AAP MLA had defected. Two MLAs are in jail, some are unwell and some others are out of station, he said.
He said several MLAs explained how they were contacted and offered money to switch sides, allegedly by "BJP people".
The chief minister asserted that the BJP thought it could finish the AAP by arresting him.
"You may arrest me but how will you finish Kejriwal's thoughts?" he asked.
The Delhi chief minister alleged that the BJP, through control over the Services department and the bureaucracy, was obstructing the work of his government.
"They claim to be Ram bhakt but they stopped medicines for the poor people in our hospitals. Did Lord Ram ask for stopping medicines for the poor people?" he said.
Keriwal said he has faced attacks in the past, been slapped, got ink thrown on him and now they want to arrest him.

Starting the discussion, the AAP's Kasturba Nagar MLA Madan Lal alleged that the BJP was persistently trying to "fail" and "paralyse" the Kejriwal government -- either by poaching party MLAs or interfering in its workings.
Leader of Opposition Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, the lone opposition representative in the House following the suspension of BJP members for the session, was not present when the discussion began.
This is the third motion of confidence of the Kejriwal government in the last three years. It comes amid the AAP's claims that the BJP wanted to break the party by offering money to its MLAs and toppling its government in Delhi.
The previous confidence motions came in August 2022 and March 2023, amid AAP allegations that the BJP was carrying out "Operation Lotus" to poach its MLA.
The AAP has an overwhelming majority in the Delhi Assembly, with 62 MLAs in the 70-member House. The opposition BJP has eight MLAs, of whom seven are currently suspended.
Tabling the motion of confidence on Friday, Kejriwal said, "Two MLAs had come to me saying they were contacted by BJP members offering them Rs 25 crore each. They were told that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will be arrested and the government will be toppled." "They were also told that the BJP is in touch with 21 MLAs. They have made multiple attempts to approach our MLAs under 'Operation Lotus'. Even this time, our MLAs refused to budge," he had added.
Kejriwal said the AAP checked with all its MLAs after these claims and found that seven of its legislators were approached but none of them accepted the offer.
He said the BJP knows it can never win elections in Delhi and that is why it is using different tactics to topple the AAP government.
"To show that none of our MLAs have defected, I present this resolution, 'The House expresses its trust in the Cabinet'," he had said.

AAP MLA shows wads of cash in Delhi Assembly, alleges corruption at hospital

The MLA further said he was not deterred by the threats and demanded action against the private contractor.

Ruling AAP MLA Mahender Goyal created a flutter in the Delhi Assembly on Wednesday, showing wads of cash inside the House and claiming a private contractor at a city government hospital tried to bribe him.
Complaining about irregularities in the hiring of temporary staff at the Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini, Goyal claimed there was a threat to his life from "powerful" people trying to silence him.
The MLA further said he was not deterred by the threats and demanded action against the private contractor.
"I need protection. My life is in danger," the Rithala MLA told the House.
Speaker Ram Niwas Goel said the matter was serious and referred it to the petition committee of the House.&nbsp;

Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders protested inside and outside the state assembly on Thursday after six of its MLAs were marshalled out for the entire session. The MLAs were suspended following an argument with Deputy Speaker Rakhi Birla who did not heed their demand to take up their calling attention notices before a discussion on the no-confidence motion, reported NDTV. 

While some BJP MLAs walked out soon after and protested outside the Delhi Assembly, some stormed the well of the House.&nbsp;

The MLAs were suspended following an argument with Deputy Speaker Rakhi Birla who did not heed their demand to take up their calling attention notices before a discussion on the no-confidence motion, reported NDTV.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had brought in the no-confidence motion on Monday to show that the alleged "Operation Lotus" of the BJP had failed in Delhi.
Birla said no calling attention notice will be taken up till the no-confidence motion is debated and voted on.
Opposing it, Leader of Opposition Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said there are a lot of issues to be discussed in the assembly -- "there is a shortage of drinking water, Delhi is the world's most polluted capital...there are health-related problems".
He said there was no need to enact a "drama" to prove Arvind Kejriwal enjoys the support of his MLAs.
Birla said the no-confidence motion is important considering "whatever has happened in opposition-ruled states".
All issues of the opposition will be taken up once the no-confidence motion process is completed, she said.
When opposition members did not relent, Birla ordered that BJP MLAs Vijender Gupta, Abhay Verma and Mohan Singh Bisht be marshalled out.
The rest of the BJP MLAs walked out of the Assembly soon after.
Birla said opposition members come to the assembly to garner media attention and that they are not bothered about people-centric issues.
The special session was disrupted for the third day on Wednesday as the ruling AAP and opposition BJP MLAs forced adjournments. The session commenced on Friday.

Reports say, the tunnel couldn't be excavated beyond a point because the path of tunnel was blocked by the foundations of new buildings, flyover footings and other structures.

Delhi Legislative Assembly officials discovered a tunnel-like structure reportedly between the Vidhan Sabha and Red Fort.
Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, while speaking to news agency ANI, confirmed that the tunnel connects the Legislative Assembly to Red Fort.
Goel further explained that the Delhi Assembly, which was used as the Central Legislative Assembly after India's capital was shifted from Kolkata to Delhi in 1912, was converted into a court in 1926.
He added that the British used the tunnel to move freedom fighters to the court.

As more details are awaited on the rich history of the secret passage, officials have decided not to dig any further, however, Goel said that the gallows room will most probably be opened for tourists by the next independence day.

Meanwhile, Delhi Home Minister Satyender Jain took pot shots at Bidhuri's speech, saying that in his praise for the new Commissioner, he has highlighted the fact that the Commissioners before Asthana were useless.
In an order issued on Tuesday, Home Ministry said that Asthana, who was serving as the Director General of the Border Security Force, would join as the Delhi Police Commissioner with immediate effect.
