The Centre on Sunday submitted to the Supreme Court that all deaths caused by coronavirus diagnosis, irrespective of co-morbidities, are to be classified as deaths due to Covid-19.
Responding to a plea seeking directions for ex-gratia compensation to family members of those diseased due to complications pertaining to Covid-19, the Ministry of Home Affairs in an affidavit stated that the only exception could be where there is a clear alternative cause of death that cannot be attributed to Covid.
In order to claim compensation, a death certificate is required to establish that the death is due to Covid-19. However, death certificates in India do not include any information related to the cause of death of an individual.
Also, so far covid fatalities have been labeled so if the patient has died inside a hospital, not at home or any place else. These factors have contributed in the mass discrepancy in fatality figures.
In its 183-page affidavit, the Centre has cleared that all Covid deaths, wherever they take place should be certified as Covid deaths. The MHA further said that the states can continue to use their domicile death audit pro forma as long as long as it takes into account the parameters suggested.

At least 6 Covid-19 patients died at a hospital in Madhya Pradesh&rsquo;s Shahdol on Saturday night allegedly due to low oxygen supply. The stage administration has denied the allegation and maintained that there is sufficient supply of oxygen and the demand is being met.
But the Dean of the Government Medical College Hospital said that the facility was overwhelmed with patients and could not keep up with the oxygen supply. All 62 beds in the Intensive Care Unit are occupied. He also said that the cylinders at the hospital do not have the capacity to hold sufficient oxygen for the increasing number of patients.
The hospital had requested for more supply but the cylinders did not reach on time. As a result, the hospital reduced the pressure of the oxygen that was being supplied to the the patients. However, the hospital like the state administration maintains that the fatalities occurred in the Intensive Care Unit and all those who died were critical.
The Opposition Congress attacked the government over the lagging supplies. Former Chief Minister of the state Kamal Nath in a tweet said that oxygen and remdevisir were sufficient only on the government&rsquo;s records but not on the ground.

In Jharkhand&rsquo;s Ranchi, people are being forced to burn the dead out in the open on the banks of Subarnarekha river in Ghaghara as crematoriums are full.
In the national capital, the main cremation ground, Nigambodh Ghat, has been running 22 platforms and six CNG-run furnaces exclusively for cremating people dying to the virus. People are still struggling to perform funeral rites due to lack of space at the facility.
In Bengaluru, the wait time for cremation has gone up to 3-4 hours. Crematoriums that would usually get 5-6 bodies a day are now getting 22-25 bodies of which 15 are covid infected.
In Uttar Pradesh&rsquo;s Lucknow, the municipality has ordered extra supply of wood for pyres, more electric crematoriums and employed 100 people to work in two shifts, day and night. The staff has been directed to prepare pyres at night so that there is no queue the next day.
In Chhattisgarh&rsquo;s Raipur, hospitals are now running out of storage to keep the dead. At Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, bodies have been lying on gurneys outside the premises as freezers at the mortuary are full.
In Madhya Pradesh, bodies have been piling up at crematoriums and burial grounds. In the state capital Bhopal, 37 bodies were cremated following covid protocols on April 12th at just one crematorium. At Indore&rsquo;s Panchkuiya Muktidham, at least 100 bodies have been cremated in April. At Pipliyapala Mukridham, record show 126 cremations. But the official count of Covid deaths in the two cities combined is 93 for April.

The Health Ministry on Friday said that India has one of the lowest Covid-19 deaths per million population in the world. Since October 4, less than 1000 fatalities have been reported daily which was at 1.52 percent since March 22. According to reports, 22 States and Union Territories have demonstrated better performance as compared to the national average. On the other hand, the 13 State and UTs where the death per million population was more than the national average included&nbsp;Puducherry, Maharashtra, Goa, Delhi, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Punjab. The total number of recoveries have surged to 64,53,779 and exceeded active cases of COVID-19 by 56,49,251.
