New York: 22 fire incidents sparked by E-bike batteries reported this year causing 2 deaths

Many of the fires blamed on the batteries have been caused by malfunctioning devices left to charge overnight and placed in a hallway

Lithium-ion batteries used to power electric bicycles and scooters have already sparked 22 fires that caused 36 injuries and two deaths in New York City this year, four times the number of fires linked to the batteries by this time last year, officials said.
On Friday, Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said Mayor Eric Adams' administration is &ldquo;coming at this problem from every single angle,&rdquo; including working with the City Council and the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission on additional regulations for the batteries and educating the public on their proper use and storage.
&ldquo;These are incredibly dangerous devices, and we must make sure that members of the community are handling them properly and using them safely,&rdquo; Kavanagh said at a briefing on public safety.
Many of the fires blamed on the batteries have been caused by malfunctioning devices left to charge overnight and placed in a hallway or near a door where they can trap people inside a burning apartment.
Three children and an adult were injured this month when a charging battery started a fire in their upper Manhattan apartment at 1:30 am, officials said.
Fire Department Chief of Operations John Esposito said after the February 5 blaze that when the battery overheated and sparked a fire, "it blocked the egress out of the apartment, trapping the family.&rdquo; Kavanagh said the e-bike batteries &ldquo;present often an immediate inability to exit one's room or one's apartment or one's home.
So it's really critical that we work with all our partners up here in government around enforcement, around education, around combating the hazards that these present to citizens and first responders.&rdquo;

The Delhi High Court on Friday said that death is caused due to toxic work culture and is a social problem which requires the government, labour unions, corporates and health officials to formulate appropriate policies.
The observations were made by a single judge bench of Justice Jasmeet Singh while hearing a bail plea of the former Secretary of Central Board of Irrigation and Power, accused of turning a blind eye to e-mails sent by a manager who allegedly died by suicide in 2020 due to hostile work environment.
The husband of the late manager had filed an FIR against the former secretary and others saying that his wife had sent 2 emails about the behaviour of senior officials, but instead of taking action, the former secretary chose to take no action and created a hostile environment leading to the death of the former employee.&nbsp;
The court cited an example of Japan where the government acknowledged deaths caused due to overwork and toxic work culture. Subsequently, the govt drafted policies to address mental healthcare in places.&nbsp;

As many as four women, who attended the Double Puncture Laparoscopy (DPL) camp at a government hospital in Ranga Reddy district in Telangana five days ago, died and nine others have been hospitalised, as per a report by NDTV.
With protests by the kin of the deceased alleging medical negligence, the state government has ordered a comprehensive inquiry headed by State Director of Public Health G Srinivasa Rao into the tragedy and he will submit his report in seven days.
DPL is a female sterilisation programme. The camp was conducted on August 25 at the government hospital at Ibrahimpatnam in Ranga Reddy district with 34 women undergoing the surgery, Srinivasa Rao said.
While two deaths occurred earlier, two others died on Monday evening. The State government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh each to the next of the kin of the deceased and a house under the State government&rsquo;s two-bedroom house scheme.
The deceased had complained of symptoms, including gastroenteritis (GE).
Expressing anguish over the incident, Rao said the cause of death would be known only after a post-mortem.
&nbsp;In the wake of four deaths, 30 women have been screened with regard to their health status, he said.
As a precautionary measure, seven have been admitted to a major private hospital in the city, while two others were being treated at the State-run Nizam&rsquo;s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) here.

None of the 30 women faced any life-threatening problem, Rao said.
&nbsp;The government would also take care of the education of the children of the deceased.
The government on Monday ordered a comprehensive inquiry headed by Rao into the tragedy and he will submit his report in seven days.
The superintendent of the hospital where the surgeries were performed has been placed under suspension.
The doctor who performed the surgeries has been stripped of his licence temporarily.
The government would review the programme and take necessary measures to address any shortcomings, Rao said.
Replying to a query, he said about 1.50 lakh surgeries are performed every year and it needs to be investigated why the problem occurred only this year and at this particular camp.
All precautions are being taken to avoid recurrence of such tragedies, he added.

Out of the deceased, 31 belonged to different villages in Botad and nine were natives of neighbouring Dhandhuka taluka in Ahmedabad district, the official of Botad police control room said.
Nearly 50 people were still admitted to hospitals in Bhavnagar, Botad and Ahmedabad, he said.
The Botad and Ahmedabad police on Tuesday registered three First Information Reports (FIRs) against nearly 20 culprits under Indian Penal Code Sections 302 (murder), 328 (causing hurt by poison) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and have arrested at least 10 of them so far.
The Vadodara rural police on Wednesday nabbed Jatubha Rathod, one of the accused in an FIR registered by Barvala police in Botad and absconding since being booked, an official said.
The hooch tragedy had come to light early Monday morning when some people living in Rojid village of Botad and other surrounding villages were referred to government hospitals in Barvala area and Botad towns with deteriorating health condition.

Primary investigations by police have revealed that some small-time bootleggers of different villages of Botad district had made spurious liquor by mixing water with methyl alcohol or Methanol, a highly poisonous industrial solvent, and sold it to villagers for Rs 20 per pouch.
According to police, forensic analysis has established that the victims consumed methyl alcohol.
The Gujarat Home Department has formed a three-member committee, headed by senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Subhash Trivedi, to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident and submit a report within three days, as per a government release.
Police investigation has revealed that a person named Jayesh aka Raju had stolen 600 litres of methyl alcohol from a godown in Ahmedabad where he worked as a manager and then sold it to his Botad-based cousin Sanjay for Rs 40,000 on July 25.
Despite knowing that it was an industrial solvent, Sanjay sold the chemical to bootleggers of different villages of Botad.
These bootleggers mixed water in the chemical and sold it to people as country-made liquor, police said.&nbsp;
