The rise in Covid cases in Europe was being driven by a highly contagious Delta variant, insufficient vaccination coverage & the easing of covid restriction.
Covid-related deaths increased last week to nearly 4,200 a day, doubling from 2,100 deaths a day at the end of September. .According to WHO data.
The WHO said face masks reduce Covid incidence by 53 percent according to a recent study, and 'over 160,000 deaths could be prevented (by March 1) if universal mask coverage of 95 percent was achieved'.

In Maharashtra&rsquo;s Buldhana district on Tuesday night, a shopkeeper was stabbed to death with a sword by robbers, the police said.
The incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed inside and outside the electronics shop in Chikhli city of Buldhana.
Two masked men entered the shop, named Anand Electronics when the shop owner Kamlesh Popat was preparing to close up for the day and go home.
In a CCTV footage of the incident, one of the accused seen approaching the owner sitting behind his desk. He then immediately pulls out a weapon, that looks like a gun, and points it toward the owner while another accused pulls out a sword from behind.
The shopkeeper was seen trying to fight off the attackers but he was grievously attacked with the sword.
The men soon fled from the shop, with the stolen money and other valuables on their motorbike and left the shopkeeper in a pool of blood inside his shop in a critical condition and he died soon after.
The police have filed a case and started an investigation into the incident which has created panic among local shopkeepers in the area.

According to the police, a truck loaded with poultry, heading towards Mumbai from Pune, lost control and rammed into two other vehicles moving in the same direction near the Borghat area at Khopoli around 6 am.
Two persons travelling in the car and the driver of the poultry truck succumbed to their injuries. However, a few other passengers caught in the pile-up escaped with minor injuries.

Men over 50 years of age have a 60% higher risk of early death than women in the same age group, according to a new study published in the&nbsp;Canadian Medical Association Journal.&nbsp;The study was done to investigate the variations in the mortality gap between men and women across countries.
The higher risk for men comes partly due to heart disease and heavier rates of smoking in men, says the study.
