<h2>The Monetary Policy Committee is aiming to keep the inflation rate which is somewhere around 5.5% to be around 4% and the interest rate cut is expected to begin from the third quarter of 2024, as per SBI chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara</h2>

Chairman of State Bank of India, Dinesh Kumar Khara expects the Reserve Bank of India to begin the interest rate cuts from the third quarter of 2024. Speaking to CNBC-TV18 in Davos World Economic Forum regarding the interest rate cut, Khara said that the monetary policy committee has clearly indicated that they would like to have the inflation rate of around 4% and we are somewhere around 5.5%.
<h3>RBI interest rate cut</h3>
He further went on to say that once the US Federal Reserve Bank starts to cut the interest rate, RBI will follow suit.&nbsp;
"What I expect is that going forward, there should be better situations to prevail and once the US Federal Reserve starts cutting interest rates, not before the middle of this calendar year, but maybe in the third quarter, we expect that there could be some interest rate cut which we might get to see," he said.

CNBC-TV18 quoted Khara and said that RBI has asked banks to keep a check on their credit-deposit (CD) ratio to prevent overheating of the system. Credit deposit ratio tells how much of the money banks have raised in the form of deposits has been deployed as loans.&nbsp;
While the RBI has asked some banks to reduce the CD ratio to less than 75% mark, SBI's ratio stands at 66-67% on its domestic book and around 70% on its international book.&nbsp;
<h3>Global investors interest on India</h3>
Khara on the rise of interest on India among global investors pointed out Indian economy's resilience as the major reason.&nbsp;
"Many of them are very keen to look at their supply chain relocation, and they want India to be a part of the supply chain. So, I think to that extent, India story is quite promising," he told CNBC-TV18
He further went on to say that India will attract more investors with its green initiatives in terms of solar, renewable batteries, electric vehicles (EVs).

As global leaders convene for their annual gathering, a Monday survey by chief economists projects a global economic decline in 2024 and an acceleration of geo-economic fragmentation. The Chief Economists Outlook report from the World Economic Forum (WEF) warns of increased economic uncertainty, citing ongoing challenges like tight financial conditions, geopolitical tensions, and rapid advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI).
Positive Outlook for Some Regions:&nbsp;
Over half of chief economists (56%) predict a weakened global economy this year, while 43% foresee conditions remaining unchanged or strengthening. Despite this, the outlook for South Asia and East Asia and the Pacific remains positive, with a substantial majority expecting at least moderate growth in 2024.
China's Unique Circumstance:&nbsp;
China stands as an exception, with a smaller majority (69%) anticipating moderate growth due to concerns over weak consumption, lower industrial production, and property market issues hindering a stronger rebound.
Globally, the majority also anticipates loosening labor markets (77%) and financial conditions (70%) in the coming year. While expectations for high inflation have been tempered in all regions, regional growth outlooks vary, with no region projected for very strong growth in 2024.
WEF Managing Director Saadia Zahidi emphasizes the precarious economic environment highlighted by the Chief Economists Outlook. Zahidi underscores the need for global cooperation to foster sustainable, inclusive economic growth amid easing global inflation, stalling growth, tight financial conditions, deepening global tensions, and rising inequalities.
Concerns over Geo-economic Fragmentation:
In Europe, the economic outlook has significantly weakened since September 2023, with 77% of respondents expecting weak or very weak growth. In the US and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), the outlook is also weaker, with approximately six in 10 respondents foreseeing moderate or stronger growth this year.
Expectations for increased geo-economic fragmentation are shared by around seven in 10 chief economists, who anticipate accelerated fragmentation this year. A majority believes geopolitics will heighten volatility in the global economy (87%) and stock markets (80%), increase localization (86%), strengthen geo-economic blocs (80%), and widen the North-South divide (57%) in the next three years.
As governments experiment with industrial policy tools, chief economists expect these policies to remain largely uncoordinated between countries. While two-thirds expect industrial policies to foster new economic growth hotspots and vital industries, they also warn of rising fiscal strains and divergence between higher- and lower-income economies.
Chief economists anticipate varying AI-enabled benefits across income groups, with more optimistic views in high-income economies. A strong majority believes generative AI will increase efficiency in output production (79%) and innovation (74%) in high-income economies in the current year. Looking ahead five years, 94% expect these productivity benefits to become economically significant in high-income economies, compared to 53% for low-income economies.
Regarding employment impact, almost three-quarters (73%) do not foresee a net positive impact on employment in low-income economies, and 47% say the same for high-income economies. Views are divided on the likelihood of generative AI increasing standards of living and leading to a decline in trust, with both being slightly more likely in high-income markets.
The Chief Economists Outlook draws on the latest policy development research, consultations, and surveys with leading chief economists from the public and private sectors. The survey was conducted in November-December 2023.

The FBI chief said that China can use its AI advancements for greater hacking, intellectual property theft, and repression of dissidents.

The chief of USA's premier probe agency on 19 January 2023 expressed "deep concern" about the Chinese government's artificial intelligence programme.
Christopher Wray, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said that Beijing's AI programme was "not constrained by rule of law". He added that it was "built on top of massive troves of intellectual property and sensitive data that they've stolen over the years".
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the FBI chief said that China can use its AI advancements for greater hacking, intellectual property theft, and repression of dissidents.
More broadly, he said, "AI is a classic example of a technology where I have the same reaction every time. I think, Wow, We can do that?' And then I think, Oh god, they can do that.'"
Such concerns have long been voiced by US officials. In October 2021, for instance, US counterintelligence officials issued warnings about China's ambitions in AI as part of a renewed effort to inform business executives, academics and local and state government officials about the risks of accepting Chinese investment or expertise in key industries.

With jobs improving and inflation easing, India will continue to remain a bright spot in the global scenario, says Niti Aayog CEO at the World Economic Forum in Davos.&nbsp;

At the ongoing World Economic Forum in Davos, Parameswaran Iyer, Niti Aayog CEO, tells Moneycontrol that India will continue to show resilience in the face of global headwinds.&nbsp; This, especially in light of the structural reforms such as GST, production-linked-incentives that have been undertaken.&nbsp;
Iyer says that he is confident India will remain a bright spot with the jobs scenario improving and inflation easing, however, warns, 'we need to be careful and cautiously optimistic'.&nbsp;
He went on to add that "India is open for businesses on a numbers of counts. In terms of our growth trajectory, our strong manufacturing and export performance, our incentivisation like the PLI scheme. So overall, India is one of the strongest foreign direct investment (FDI) destinations." Commenting on the upcoming union budget, the Niti Aayog CEO said that budget 2023 will push growth further, create jobs and that MSMEs as well as the agriculture sectors would be a prime focus.&nbsp;

A large Indian contingent invited investment at Davos, as the WEF&nbsp;reflected a changing international order, with the Ukraine war, climate change, and global inflation at the top of the agenda.

The war in Ukraine, climate change, and global inflation topped the agenda at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, as political and business leaders converged to discuss global issues.
The first in-person event since the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, the World Economic Forum now reflects a changing world. Organisers asked those attending to take the train instead of travelling in an attempt to cut down on the event&rsquo;s carbon footprint, although how many took that advice is anyone&rsquo;s guess.
A large Indian contingent was in attendance at Davos, from Union Ministers to executives and leaders of India&rsquo;s biggest firms, who participated in a number of sessions at the forum. According to Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, a record high 200 people from India attended the WEF this year.

India&rsquo;s large turnout was accompanied by &lsquo;The India Lounge&rsquo;, set up in a street in Davos, serving up local delicacies, and inviting foreign investment at the same time. Several states, including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, set up their own individual camps as well. &lsquo;Come, invest in India&rsquo;, seemed to be the message.
India recently reported its highest ever foreign direct investment inflow, with $83.57 billion invested in 2021-22. Indian states are trying hard to increase this number at Davos, with Maharashtra signing over $10 billion in investment intentions with 24 companies, and Telangana signing renewables investment pacts worth a total of around $16 billion.
The World Economic Forum reflected the tumultuous state of global affairs, with the war in Ukraine featuring heavily throughout sessions. Russian business and political leaders haven't been invited to the gathering this year, and the former Russia House has been converted to an exhibition covering alleged warcrimes committed by the country. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the forum, and asked business leaders to exit Russia.
