With this win, Praggnanandhaa became the first Indian since Viswanathan Anand in 2006 to secure the title. Both players finished the 14-player round-robin tournament with 8.5 points after 13 classical rounds, setting the stage for an exciting tiebreaker.

In the final round, Gukesh suffered his first defeat as World Champion, losing to Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi in 31 moves.&nbsp;
Praggnanandhaa, too, was defeated by Grandmaster Vincent Keymer in an intense marathon game, but both players remained tied on points, forcing the tiebreaker.
The tiebreaker consisted of two blitz games, and Gukesh took the initial lead by winning the first game with white pieces. He only needed a draw in the second game to win the title. However, Praggnanandhaa made a remarkable recovery, winning both blitz games to secure the championship.
The situation echoed the 2013 Candidates Tournament, where both Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik lost their final games but Carlsen won the title on tiebreaks, ultimately becoming the World Champion.
Despite his loss, Praggnanandhaa proceeded to the tiebreaker against Gukesh. Meanwhile, Uzbek Grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov was held to a draw by P. Harikrishna, ensuring both Indian players finished at the top.
The tiebreaker was a thrilling contest of rapid-fire chess, with both players playing two blitz games, each lasting three minutes with a two-second increment. The games reached Sudden Death, and in a tense final sequence, Gukesh blundered, allowing Praggnanandhaa to seal the win.
In the Tata Steel Challengers 2025, Vietnam&rsquo;s Thai Dai Van Nguyen claimed the title. Meanwhile, Praggnanandhaa&rsquo;s sister, GM R Vaishali, finished ninth, and Divya Deshmukh secured 12th place in the 14-player event.

The 22-year-old Bhaker became independent India's first athlete to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympics.

Double Olympic-medallist Manu Bhaker and chess world champion D Gukesh were among four winners of the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award announced by the Sports Ministry, which also named an unprecedented 17 para-athletes in the list of 32 Arjuna awardees to honour their resounding success at the Paris Paralympics.
The other two Khel Ratna winners unveiled by the ministry on Thursday for the year 2024 were men's hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh and para-athlete Praveen Kumar.
The awards will be conferred on the athletes by President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 17.
The 22-year-old Bhaker became independent India's first athlete to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympics with her bronze-winning show in the 10m air pistol individual and 10m air pistol mixed team events in August.
The announcement comes a few days after reports that Bhaker had been ignored for the Khel Ratna as the award selection committee did not recommend her due to the absence of an application from her.
The shooter later admitted that there may have been a lapse on her part while filing the nomination. Once the procedural issues were sorted, there was never any doubt that Bhaker would be among the awardees.
In the same Paris Games, Hamranpreet led the Indian hockey team to its second consecutive bronze medal.
The 18-year-old Gukesh, on the other hand, became the youngest-ever World champion while also helping the Indian team win a historic gold in the Chess Olympiad last year.
The fourth recipient, para high-jumper Praveen, was crowned the T64 champion in the Paris Paralympics. The T64 classification is for athletes who have one or both legs missing below the knee and rely on a prosthetic leg for running.
The Khel ratna awardees receive a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh along with a citation and a medallion. The Arjuna awardees are given Rs 15 lakh as cash reward, a statuette of Arjuna and a citation.

The athletes selected for this year's Arjuna award include Paris Olympics bronze medal-winning lot of wrestler Aman Sehrawat, shooters Swapnil Kusale and Sarabjot Singh and the men's hockey team players Jarmanpreet Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Sanjay and Abhishek.
The para-athletes outnumber the able-bodied ones in the list of Arjuna winners this time due to the magnificent Paris showing in which they returned with 29 medals, including seven gold and nine silver.
The official list also includes sprinter Jyothi Yarraji, javelin thrower Annu Rani, women's hockey team captain Salima Tete, world champion boxers Nitu Ghangas and Saweety, veteran swimmer Sajan Prakash, Olympiad gold-winning chess player Vantika Agrawal and squash star Abhay Singh.
Among the para athletes, Paris Paralympics gold-medallists Dharambir (club throw), Navdeep Singh (javelin throw) and Nitesh Kumar (para badminton) are the prominent names in the record number of Arjuna winners.
Paris Olympics bronze-winning para-archer Rakesh Kumar, para-shooters Mona Agarwal and Rubina Francis also feature in the list among others.
The ministry also cleared three coaches for Dronacharya award in the regular category, including Olympic bronze-medallist Swapnil Kusale's coach Deepali Deshpande.
The Dronacharya award in the lifetime category will be conferred on former India football manager Armando Colaco and badminton coach S Muralidharan.
The award is given to coaches to honour their outstanding work and for enabling athletes to achieve excellence in their chosen sport in top international competitions.

Gukesh became the 18th world champion after defeating Ding in a 14-game match in Singapore last month.
He is four years younger than Garry Kasparov, who had been the youngest world champion since 1985 when he beat Anatoly Karpov.
On Thursday, Gukesh was among four athletes who the government decided to award the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award -- the country's highest sporting honour.
Besides becoming the youngest-ever world champion, Gukesh had also helped the Indian team win a historic gold in the Chess Olympiad last year.
"The awardees will receive their awards from the President of India at a specially organised function at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 17th January, 2025 (Friday) at 1100 hours," the sports ministry said in a press release on Thursday.
After the Singapore match, Adani had called his victory "stunning".
"At just 18, @DGukesh has made history! What an achievement - the youngest-ever undisputed classical chess world champion, beating the great Ding Liren! This isn't just a victory - it is a defining moment for India's chess revolution, where an entire bold generation of champions dares to dream and inspires an entire nation to rise! As the chess world celebrates Gukesh&rsquo;s achievement, Carlsen&rsquo;s absence from the championship arena serves as a reminder of the changing guard in the world of chess.

World number one Magnus Carlsen has lauded D Gukesh for making the most of his chances to be crowned the youngest ever world chess champion but has ruled out the possibility of a title showdown with him as desired by the Indian teen.
The 18-year-old defeated defending champion Ding Liren in the 14th and final round of the match on Thursday to become only the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to claim the coveted trophy.
"It's an incredible achievement (by Gukesh), first he was down in the FIDE circuit, won the tournament in Chennai on demand, then he had an amazing performance in the Candidates tournament," said Carlsen on a popular recap stream, analysing the match.
Carlsen said he was a bit surprised by how the match unfolded with most of the games ending in draw.
"This was something that was bit unexpected, a lot of us thought that Gukesh was a favourite to win the match but this was a game that never really took off, Gukesh was doing a great job of keeping the position alive and suddenly it was all over," Carlsen said.
"It's a really good thing for him, he has the title now for two years, winning this championship is extremely motivating so there is a very good chance that he is going to go for a great run of results now and probably become the number two player now and may be number one in the not so distant future," he noted.
In the post-event press conference, Gukesh stated that he would love to fight it out against Carlsen at some point. The Norwegian maverick decided not to defend his title in 2023 after winning the world championship in 2013.
"Winning World Chess Championship does not mean I am the best player, obviously that is Magnus Carlsen. I want to reach the level Magnus has achieved," Gukesh said.
"Obviously playing against Magnus in the world championship would be amazing, it would be the toughest challenge there is in chess. It is up to Magnus, but I would love to test myself against the best player in the world."
But Carlsen ruled that out.
"I am not part of this circus anymore," said Carlsen in a general reference to world title clashes.
Carlsen also praised Gukesh's team and said they did a good job.
"It is becoming progressively harder (to play mainstream openings) all main lines are analysed so they had to jump a bit," Carlsen said of the opening choices made by Gukesh.
"I have generally kept it fairly risk-free with the white pieces, I have tried not to let things go out of control," he added.
The world's best player for a decade now was critical of Liren's choices in the final game.
"There are lot of things that Ding could have done differently, Gukesh really made most of his chances," he said.
"It's a massive moment for India, it&rsquo;s a combination of work that is being done there. This is not over.
"There are many more success stories to come, it was really heartwarming to see what it means to Gukesh, it was a very beautiful moment," Carlsen summed it up.

Indian chess players have been on a roll this year, winning the Olympiad gold in both the men's and women's events, for the first time among other achievements.

Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh on Thursday became the youngest world chess champion at 18 years after beating title-holder Ding Liren in the last game of a nerve-wracking showdown to herald a new era of dominance by the country's chess players.
Taking forward the incredible legacy of the great Viswanathan Anand, Gukesh became only the second Indian to clinch the coveted prize after the iconic player, who owned the crown five times in his career.
After settling into "semi-retirement", the 55-year-old Anand, incidentally, played a pivotal role in shaping Gukesh at his chess academy in Chennai.
Gukesh secured the requisite 7.5 points as against 6.5 of his Chinese rival after winning the 14th and last classical time control game of the match that seemed headed for a draw for most part. As winner, he will walk away with a whopping USD 1.3 million (approx Rs 11.03 crore) from the 2.5 million prize purse.
"I was dreaming this moment for the last 10 years. I am happy that I realised the dream (and made it) into reality," the soft-spoken Chennai-lad told reporters after the historic triumph here.
The triumph was expectedly hailed across India with Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailing it as "historic and exemplary".

The reticent teenager grinned widely and raised his arms in celebration after the victory, a stark contrast from the poker face he usually sports while playing. Once the feeling settled in, a tear or two also escaped his eyes, showing a rare moment of vulnerability.
"I got a bit emotional because I was not expecting to win," he added.
Even on Thursday, when the analysts had proclaimed that the match, in all likelihood, would go into a tie-breaker, Gukesh's face hardly gave anything away as he gained the upper-hand.
It was a momentary lapse of concentration by Liren in what seemed a drawn endgame and as it happened, the entire chess world was left in a state of shock.
The players were just left with a rook and a bishop and Gukesh had two pawns against one trying to make a foray without much success.
However, the ability to keep pushing for more gave Gukesh a distinct advantage over the Chinese and the latter simply collapsed to give the title to Gukesh.
Before Gukesh's feat on Thursday, the legendary Garry Kasparov of Russia was the youngest world champion when he won the title at the age of 22, dethroning Anatoly Karpov in 1985.
Gukesh had entered the match as the youngest ever challenger to the world crown after winning the Candidates tournament earlier this year.
"Every chess player wants to live this dream. I am living my dream," said Gukesh.
Gukesh, who won the 14th game against Liren after 58 moves in four hours, is the 18th world chess champion overall.
If Thursday's game was also drawn, winner was to be decided in shorter duration tie-breaks on Friday.
Gukesh had won the third and 11th rounds before Thursday's decisive game, while the 32-year-old Liren emerged victorious in the opening and 12th games.
All other games were drawn in the match.
"I came here suddenly and I lost the first game itself. Luckily while going back I had Vishy Sir (Anand) in the lift and he said 'I had only 11 games left you have 13'," Gukesh recalled, while shining a light on the contribution of his mentor.
Anand was citing his 2006 first match over Veselin Topalov that he had eventually won after losing the first game.
Interestingly, Anand had won that match in the last Classical (12th) game, with black pieces. Anand lost the title to Norwegian maverick Magnus Carlsen back in 2013.
It was on the 55th move that the dye was cast.
Liren, leaving his sense of danger, went for a rook trade and Gukesh pawed him almost instantly. He knew that it was his title to lose and it took just three more moves before the Chinese called it a day.

History-making teen Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh was swamped by fans as he returned to an enthusiastic reception in Chennai on Thursday after becoming the youngest challenger to the world title following his triumph at the prestigious Candidates Chess Tournament in Toronto.
Hundreds of students from the Velammal Vidyalaya, the school where Gukesh studies, lined up at the airport at least one hour before his flight landed to greet the 17-year-old chess prodigy.
A sizeable general crowd also built up as his arrival time drew closer and the area around the arrival gate was jam-packed in no time.
The youngster walked out at around 3am and he was immediately flanked by the jubilant mass. In no time, he had garlands around his neck even as the police jostled to escort him out safely.
"I feel very happy for this homecoming, this is a special achievement. I was in a good space since the beginning of the tournament, I had full confidence that I will emerge top in this tournament and luck was on my side as well," Gukesh said while talking to the media at the airport.
"It's good to see so many people enjoy chess...I thank the Tamil Nadu government. I thank my Appa, Amma, coach, friends, family, sponsor and my school for being alongside me and playing an amazing role in helping me win this tournament," he added.
His mother Padma, who is a microbiologist, was there to receive him along with some other members of the family and the young champion had a huge smile on his face the moment he spotted her in the crowd. They exchanged a hug after greeting each other.
Gukesh's father Rajinikanth, who is an ENT surgeon but quit his practice to support him, had travelled with the teen to Toronto for the tournament.
On Monday, Gukesh became the first Indian after the great Viswanathan Anand to win the Candidates Tournament, which is held specifically to decide the challenger for the reigning world champion.
He became the youngest ever challenger for the title, bettering the record created by the legendary Garry Kasparov 40 years ago.
The triumph entitles Gukesh to a clash against reigning world champion Ding Liren of China in the last quarter of the year.
Kasparov had lauded Gukesh's performance, describing it as "the Indian earthquake in Toronto". He had also said that the Indian performance at the Candidates marked a "tectonic shift" in the sport's global world order.
Among the players Gukesh beat in Candidates was the 18-year-old R Praggnanandhaa, another prodigal talent to emerge from the city. In all, five Indians, three men and two women, competed in the tournament.
Gukesh has been making waves for quite a while now. He became India's youngest Grandmaster at 12 years, seven months and 17 days in January 2019.
Currently, he has a FIDE rating of 2743, while his peak rating happens to be 2758, which he attained last September.
Gukesh is 16th in the FIDE Rankings at present, while his best ranking to date happens to be eighth, which he reached last September.
Among his top recent performances was a silver medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year in the men's team category.&nbsp;

He became only the second Indian after the great Viswanathan Anand to win the prestigious tournament. Five-time world champion Anand's triumph came in 2014.

India's 17-year-old Grandmaster D Gukesh scripted history by winning the Candidates Chess Tournament here to become the youngest ever challenger to the world title, bettering a record created by the legendary Garry Kasparov 40 years ago.
Gukesh played out an easy draw with American Hikaru Nakamura in the 14th and final round to finish with nine out of a possible 14 points in the tournament that is held to decide the challenger to the world champion.
The triumph entitles Gukesh a clash against reigning world champion Ding Liren of China in the last quarter of the year.
The Chennai-based teen bettered Kasparov's record by quite a distance as the Russian great was 22 when he qualified in 1984 to clash with compatriot Anatoly Karpov.
"So relieved and so happy. I was following this crazy game (between Fabio Caruana and Ian Nepomniachtchi), and then I went for a walk with my second (Gregorz Gazevsky), I think that helped," Gukesh said after winning.
Gukesh also won a cash award of 88,500 Euros (approx Rs 78.5 lakh). The total prize fund of the Candidates was 5,00,000 Euros.

"Congratulations to @DGukesh for becoming the youngest challenger. The @WacaChess family is so proud of what you have done. I'm personally very proud of how you played and handled tough situations. Enjoy the moment," Anand posted on 'X' to congratulate the youngster, who like him, also hails from Chennai.
Needing at least a draw, Gukesh gave nothing away to Nakamura, a clear signal that the teenager is ready for the big stage and is going to be the next biggest star in the chess world.
The black pieces did not matter much as Nakamura was at sea in the Queen's Gambit Accepted and did not find any way to pursue playing for an advantage.
Gukesh won a pawn and Nakamura had to find the path to equality in the ensuing rook and opposite coloured Bishops endgame. The game lasted till move 71 but the result was never in doubt.
With Gukesh ending on 9 points, all eyes were on the match between American Caruana and Russia's Nepomniachtchi.
The American outplayed Nepomniachtchi right from the opening and enjoyed a nearly winning position for several moves.
However, the clock did the talking here as Caruana blundered on the 39th move to allow a playable position.
Things were far from over though, Caruana built his position all over again and was close to winning a second time when again his clock deceived him and he failed to find the correct continuation.
The resulting position was a drawn queen and pawns endgame where Caruana kept pressing to no avail.
Had any of these two players won, the tournament would have needed a tie-break as Gukesh and the winner would have ended up in joint lead.
Caruana, Nepomniachtchi and Nakamura all ended on an identical 8.5 points for the shared second place while Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa ended fifth on seven points defeating Nijat Abasov of Azerbaijan.
Vidit Gujrathi played out a quick draw with Firouzja Alireza of France in the final round to end on the sixth spot with six points in all.
Alireza finished seventh with five points while Abasov ended last with 3.5 points in all.
Gukesh has been making waves for a while now after becoming the third youngest in chess history to earn the Grandmaster title at the age of 12.
Last year, he won a silver medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
The dates and venue for the world championship are yet to be finalised.

Grandmaster D Gukesh grabbed a share of the lead alongside Russia's Ian Nepomniachtchi by becoming the only Indian to post a win in the fifth round of the FIDE Candidates Chess Tournament, outwitting Azerbaijan's Nijat Abasov in a hard-fought contest here.

American Hikaru Nakamura was the other winner on the day against Firouza Alireza of France while Indian teen R Praggnanandhaa played out a draw with overnight sole leader Nepomniachtchi.
Vidit Gujrathi also put an end to his losses by settling for a draw with Caruana.
Praggnanandhaa and Nakamura share the fourth spot with 2.5 points followed closely by Gujrathi on two points. Alireza and Abasov share the last position with 1.5 points apiece.
In the Women's competition, nothing changed in terms of standings with all four games ending in draws.
Praggnanandhaa's sister R Vaishali could not dent the defences of Anna Muzychuk and Koneru Humpy recovered with a draw against Aleksandra Goryachkina of Russia.
Tournament leader Zhongyi Tan of China was held to a draw by the continuously improving Nurgyul Salimova of Bulgaria and Russian Kateryna Lagno signed peace with Tingjie Lei of China.
Tan remained in front following the drawing melee with 3.5 points in her kitty and Goryachkina inched up to 3 points to remain right behind the leader.
Lagno, Vaishali and Salimova shared the third spot with 2.5 points, half a point ahead of Humpy, Muzychuk and Lei.
Gukesh started off with the King pawn and faced the Petroff defence.
The Indian ensured a complex middle game and had an edge right till the time the players hit the first-time control. However, on the 40th move, Gukesh erred and what seemed like a walk-in-the-park became a tough game, Abasov fought hard and was close to a draw by the 80th move but a blunder by the Azerbaijani on the 83rd cast the die decisively in Gukesh's favour with an extra pawn in the queen and pawn endgame. The game lasted 87 moves.
Praggnanandhaa displayed his acumen for the complexities of Nepomniachtchi.
It was another Petroff defence of the day wherein the Indian first sacrificed a pawn and followed it up with a brilliant knight sacrifice that left him with a scary advantage.
As things turned out, it was impossible to play like a machine in a clearly better position and once Praggnanandhaa traded the queens, the game was sealed towards a draw in the rook and pawn ending.
Gujrathi started off brilliantly with a victory over Nakamura in the second round, but after two losses, it was time to stay put against favourite Caruana. Not failing in his objective, the Nasik-based player was solid and got his chances in the Rossolimo variation.
Caruana's king was trapped in the middle and Gujrathi had to also find machine-like moves to force matters. With the clock ticking away, it was never easy and the end result was a draw through repetition.
Nakamura was also lucky against Alireza. A draw looked like a likely result in the ending but Alireza missed a simple tactic that gave the American a much-needed victory.
In the women's section, Vaishali stood worse after a pawn sacrifice against Muzychuk in the Italian opening game as white.
She, however, kept herself in the game by keeping the position closed and in the end, it was a draw.
Humpy did not get much as white against Goryachkina.
The middle game out of a Queen's gambit did not have much spice and the game drifted into an endgame with rook and minor pieces. Once the minor pieces were off the board, the players decided it was time to split the point.
