Severe cyclonic storm Montha caused one death, uprooted trees, and damaged thousands of hectares of crops in Andhra Pradesh, prompting authorities to distribute essential commodities to affected families and fishermen.

After making landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast overnight, severe cyclonic storm Montha left a woman dead, inundated roads, and uprooted trees at several places in the state, officials said.
Citing preliminary estimates, the government noted on Tuesday that standing agricultural crops in as many as 38,000 hectares were destroyed due to Montha, and horticulture crops in 1.38 lakh hectares were damaged.
The 43-year-old woman died at Makanagudem village in Konaseema district on October 28 after a palmyra tree was uprooted and fell on her due to strong winds. Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) managing director Prakhar Jain confirmed the death and said APSDMA is validating reports of damage. He added that there were no major injuries due to the cyclone.
West Godavari district superintendent of police Adnan Nayeem Asmi said 141 trees were uprooted across the district and eight snake bites were reported. "The cyclone crossed the coast near Antarvedi. Damage is very limited, including the uprooting of some poles and trees. One or two thatched houses were damaged in Mogalturu area," Asmi said, adding that there was no loss of life in the district. He noted there was no major interruption to electricity, though authorities cut power supply in some places as a precaution.
West Godavari district additional superintendent of police V Bhima Rao highlighted that excellent advanced preparations were in place, enabling the clearance of uprooted trees within 15 minutes. Around midnight, when Montha &mdash; meaning a fragrant flower in Thai &mdash; crossed the coast, the sea advanced up to the beach road in Perupalem village. Rao credited effective cyclone management to extensive public awareness campaigns and improved communication in seaside villages using wireless sets.
In Antarvedi village of Konaseema district, where the cyclone made landfall, a police official reported limited damage, including the uprooting of 200 trees and damage to 70 power poles. Two people were injured due to collapsed trees. "Though the cyclone moved all around us, there was no heavy rain," the official said, noting light drizzle, wind, and cloudy skies on Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, G Sai Prasad, special chief secretary for disaster management, said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the rain and flood situation and directed officials to distribute essential commodities. "Government hereby accords permission to the district collectors of affected districts for distribution of essential commodities free of cost for families in relief camps and fishermen whose livelihood got affected," Prasad said in a government order.
The government will distribute 25 kg of rice, red gram dal, cooking oil, onions, potatoes, and sugar (1 kg each). For weavers and fishermen, double the quantity of rice &mdash; 50 kg &mdash; will be provided.

Rain lashed several parts of Odisha, including the state's capital Bhubaneswar, on Wednesday as severe cyclone 'Montha' weakened into a cyclonic storm and was moving through neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, IMD said.&nbsp;
Several incidents of landslides, uprooting of trees, and damage to houses have been reported from various districts, an official at the Special Relief Commissioner&rsquo;s office said.
Light-to-moderate rain with wind speed ranging from 30 kmph to 40 kmph was recorded across the coastal belt, including Khurda, Cuttack, Puri, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts, in the state, the IMD bulletin said. The maximum of 105 mm rainfall has been recorded in Mayurbhanj district, followed by 93.5 mm in Balasore, 90 mm in Khurda and 74.4 mm in Chandbali, the bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Centre (IMD) said.
With the severe cyclone 'Montha' losing strength after its landfall on Tuesday evening in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre withdrew its 'red' (take action) and 'orange' (be prepared for action) alerts on the southern Odisha region and issued a fresh forecast. &ldquo;We have issued a 'yellow' warning (be aware) of heavy rainfall, very likely to occur at isolated places in Ganjam, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajpati, Kalahandi, and Nawarangpur districts,&rdquo; said Dr Manorama Mohanty, the director of Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar.
She said the forecast on the wind speed has also been revised. "Malkangiri and Koraput districts will experience surface wind in the range of 45 kmph to 55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph, while the wind speed in Gajapati, Rayagada, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur will be between 35 kmph and 45 kmph," Mohanty said.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had on Tuesday night reviewed the post-landfall situation of the cyclone and said 'Montha' had no major impact on Odisha. He, however, said that the deployment of rescue teams and other preparedness measures will continue till the system crosses the state during the day.
The IMD, in its latest bulletin, said, &ldquo;The cyclonic storm 'Montha' over coastal Andhra Pradesh moved nearly north-northwestwards with a speed of 15 kmph during past six hours and lay centered (at 5.30 am) at about 80 km northwest of Narsapur (Andhra Pradesh), 230 km west-southwest of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 460 km southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha).&rdquo;
The system is likely to move north-northwestwards across coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and weaken into a deep depression during the next three hours and into a depression during the subsequent six hours, the IMD said. It also said the movement of the cyclone is being closely monitored through Doppler Weather Radars (DWRs) located at Machilipatnam and Visakhapatnam, along with data from coastal observatories, automatic weather stations (AWS), ships, buoys, and satellites.
The authorities continue to monitor the weakening storm as it moves inland, bringing heavy rainfall and gusty winds to several parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, the IMD bulletin added.

Heavy rain with gale lashed Vijayawada city on Wednesday morning and a number of trees uprooted and many roads were inundated after severe cyclonic storm Montha crossed Andhra Pradesh coast near Narasapur in West Godavari district, south of Kakinada overnight, IMD said on Wednesday.
After crossing the coast, the weather system moved northwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph during the past six hours to weaken into a cyclonic storm, India Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletin issued at 5 am said.
"The latest observations indicate that the severe cyclonic storm Montha crossed Andhra Pradesh and Yanan coasts between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, south of Kakinada and close to Narsapur during midnight (11:30 pm of October 28 and 12:30 am of October 29)," IMD said in a release.
The landfall process lasted about five hours, starting around 7:30 pm on Tuesday and completing around 12:30 am on Wednesday, they added.
By 2.30 am on Wednesday, Montha, which means a fragrant flower in Thai, lay centred about 20 km west to northwest of Narasapur, 50 km northeast of Machilipatnam, 90 km west to southwest of Kakinada, 230 km southwest of Visakhapatnam and 470 km southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha).
"It is likely to move northwestwards across coastal Andhra Pradesh and maintain its intensity of a cyclonic storm during the next six hours, and weaken further into a deep depression during subsequent six hours," said the Met Department.
The latest observations indicate that the rear sector of the Montha entered into the land, it said.
The Met Department forecast light to moderate rainfall likely at most places in Andhra Pradesh and Yanam and heavy to very rainfall at a few places till October 29.
Similarly, it predicted extremely heavy rainfall of greater than 20 cm at isolated places during the same period.
For October 30, it predicted light to moderate rainfall at many places with heavy rainfall at isolated places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Rain lashed eight southern Odisha districts as cyclone 'Montha' in the Bay of Bengal intensified into a severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
Keeping in view the impending situation, the Odisha government has evacuated people from low-lying areas and hilly terrains prone to landslides in the eight districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal. It has also deployed 140 rescue teams (over 5,000 personnel) from the NDRF, ODRAF, and Fire Service.
The administration has already announced the closure of schools and anganwadi centres in nine districts till October 30, while the East Coast Railway has cancelled, diverted, or short-terminated several trains operating in the Waltair region and connected routes. The leave of government employees has also been cancelled till October 30.
All sea beaches have been sealed to prevent tourists and locals from entering, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) D K Singh said. People evacuated from vulnerable places are being housed in over 1,400 cyclone shelters opened across the eight districts, where food and other arrangements have been made. Pregnant women are also being shifted to nearby hospitals.
The state government has advised fishermen not to venture into the Bay of Bengal along and off the Odisha coast till October 29. The weather agency has also suggested hoisting Local Cautionary Signal No-III (LC-III) at Gopalpur Port and Distant Warning Signal No-II (DW-II) at Paradip, Dhamra, Puri, Chhatrapur, and Chandbali ports of Odisha.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is likely to review the situation later in the day, an official said.
In its latest bulletin, the IMD said, &ldquo;The cyclonic storm 'Montha' over westcentral Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 15 kmph during the past six hours, intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, and lay centred at 5.30 am about 190 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 270 km south-southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), 340 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), and 550 km south-southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha).&rdquo;
Montha means &ldquo;fragrant flower&rdquo; or &ldquo;beautiful flower&rdquo; in the Thai language.
The system is likely to continue moving north-northwestwards and cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada during the evening or night of Tuesday as a severe cyclonic storm, with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90&ndash;100 kmph, gusting to 110 kmph, said Dr. Manorama Mohanty, director of the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar.
For Tuesday, the IMD issued a red warning (Take Action) as it forecast scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall (7&ndash;20 cm) with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (over 20 cm) at places in the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam.
Similarly, an orange warning (Be Prepared) for heavy to very heavy rainfall (7&ndash;20 cm) was issued for Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Khurda, Puri, and Bargarh districts.
A yellow warning (Be Aware) of heavy rainfall (7&ndash;11 cm) was also forecast for Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, and Sundergarh districts.

"The cyclonic storm Montha over west-central Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 15 kmph during the past six hours (and) intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and lay centred at 5.30 am about 190 km south to southeast of Machilipatnam," said the Met Department in an official release.
It is likely to continue moving north-northwestwards and cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada during the evening and night of Tuesday as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90&ndash;100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.
The Met Department has forecast heavy rains across several parts of the southern state under the influence of Montha.
Montha means a fragrant flower in the Thai language.

The Odisha government has started evacuating people from vulnerable places and deployed 128 disaster response teams in eight southern districts of the state as the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal on Monday intensified into a cyclonic storm named 'Montha'.
Keeping in view the formation of cyclone 'Montha', the state government has started the evacuation of people from vulnerable hilly and low-lying areas of eight southern districts, which could be impacted due to the impending calamity, Odisha Revenue and Disaster Management minister Suresh Pujari said.
"The state government is well prepared to face the eventuality, and arrangements have been made in the possible impact areas. The administration will complete the process of evacuation of people from vulnerable places by 5 pm on Monday," the minister said.
Though the cyclone will cross the Andhra Pradesh Coast, it will have an impact on Odisha's southern and coastal regions, for which the state government has made all arrangements to save men and animals with a goal of 'zero casualty', Pujari said.
The minister said that 'red warning' (take action), predicting extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds (gusting up to 80 kmph), was issued for Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal and Kalahandi districts.
As a precautionary measure, the state government has deployed over 5,000 highly skilled personnel in 24 teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), five from NDRF and 99 Fire Service teams in these eight districts, the minister said, adding all the districts of the state have been directed to get ready with men and machinery for rescue operations, if at all the impending cyclone changes its trajectory.
The minister said that though rainfall will begin on Monday, the intensity of rain and wind will intensify on October 28 and 29.
The weather office also hoisted Distant Cautionary Signal No-I (DC-1) at all ports of Odisha and advised fishermen not to venture into the sea till October 29.
The IMD on its bulletin at 4 am of Monday said: "The cyclonic storm 'Montha' over Southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal moved with a speed of 16 kmph during past 3 hours and lay centered at 2.30 am on October 27, at about 600 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 680 km south-southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), 710 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 790 km west of Port Blair (Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands), and 850 km south of Gopalpur (Odisha)."
"It is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards over the Bay of Bengal during the next 12 hours. Thereafter, it is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of 28th October. It is very likely to cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam around Kakinada during evening/night of 28th October as a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph," the IMD said.
