ED raids 11 locations across Delhi-NCR and Dehradun in a ₹260 crore global cyber fraud case involving crypto, hawala networks, and impersonation scams.

The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday conducted searches at multiple premises in the national capital region and Uttarakhand as part of a money laundering probe linked to a global cyber fraud ring in which Indian and foreign nationals were duped of funds worth crores of rupees, official sources said.
The raids are being conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and are covering at least 11 premises located in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram and Dehradun, the sources said.
Fraudsters based in these cities were "cheating" Indian and foreign nationals by impersonating as police or investigating agency officers and they "extorted" money by threatening them with consequences of arrest, they said.
The fraudsters also impersonated as Microsoft and Amazon technical support service agents to "cheat" the victims.
The agency found that the monetary assets of the victims were converted into crypto currencies and transferred to the accused.
The accused generated about Rs 260 crore in the form of Bitcoins in multiple crypto-wallets, which were further liquidated into cash through conversion into USDTs through multiple hawala operators and individuals based in the UAE, according to agency sources.
The money laundering case stems from FIRs registered by the CBI and the Delhi Police.

The amount lost to cyber fraud has more than doubled from Rs 69.68 crore in FY23 to Rs 177.05 crore in FY24. This is a significant jump from previous years, highlighting an urgent need for awareness and precaution."
 These numbers are more than just statistics; they represent the financial distress faced by countless individuals and businesses. But what can we do to protect ourselves To mitigate these losses, the Reserve Bank of India has issued clear guidelines to limit the liability of customers in cases of unauthorized electronic banking transactions. Here&rsquo;s what you need to know

<li>If neither yours nor bank's fault: Report within 3 days</li>
<li>If your fault: You bear the loss until reported</li>
<li>If the fault is on the bank's part: You bear no loss.</li>
<li>If the fault is neither yours nor the bank's: Report within three working days, and you bear no loss.</li>
<li>If reported between 4-7 days, your liability ranges from Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000, depending on the account type.</li>
<li>If the fault is due to customer negligence: You bear the entire loss until you report the unauthorized transaction.</li>
<li>Reporting beyond seven days: Your liability will be determined by the bank&rsquo;s policy.</li>
</ul>
 So, what should you do if you fall victim to cyber fraud? The Home Ministry has set up a National Cybercrime Reporting Portal at www.cybercrime.gov.in and a National Cybercrime Helpline Number '1930'. Additionally, you can report financial fraud through your bank&rsquo;s customer care website or visit the nearest branch.

Recently, a senior IAS officer in Jammu and Kashmir claimed that he had become a victim of cyber fraud. Shahid Choudhary accused scamsters of impersonating him on WhatsApp by using his photograph. The criminals allegedly contacted Choudhary's friends and colleagues and sought financial help.
Days earlier, Chandigarh's police chief was targeted in a similar way. Fraudsters posed as Praveer Ranjan on WhatsApp and asked the DGP's acquintances to send Amazon gift cards.

In March, a similar scam took place in Kerala. A teacher in Kollam was duped of ₹14 lakh after fraudsters sent WhatsApp messages posing as Kerala's police chief. The teacher was told that she had won the lottery and would be booked if tax was not paid on the winnings. The number used to send the messages was reportedly registered in an Assam native's name.
Recent cases have highlighted at least 3 types of common scams which are perpetrated through WhatsApp and Facebook.
The first is WhatsApp hijacking. Scamsters try to log into their target's WhatsApp account by using that person's phone number. Then, to get the verification pin, the criminals pose as WhatsApp technicians. If the target shares the PIN, then scamsters gain access to the person's WhatsApp account. Subsequently, they send messages to the target's friends and family seeking money, or further OTPs.

The second type is the WhatsApp DP scam which we told you about earlier. For this, a WhatsApp account is created using a fake or virtual SIM. Then a government official's photograph is set as the profile picture. Subsequently, messages are sent to unsuspecting people seeking money or other favours.
Another type of scam involves fake Facebook accounts. In this, scamsters create fake accounts of their targets and then contact the target's friends and family. Covid troubles, and financial crisis are common excuses used by scamsters to seek money in this type of con.
With such cases emerging in various parts of the country, authorities have been spreading awareness and telling people how to stay safe.
Some of the basic precautions include not replying to messages from unknown numbers even if the profile picture is of a person whom you know. Do not transfer money without verifying the request offline with the person asking for help.
Do not share OTPs, passwords, bank details, and credit and debit card information under any circumstances. Do not install remote access apps, and do not click on suspicious links. Also, secure your social media accounts by enabling two-factor authentication.
Cyber criminals prey on people's lack of awareness to carry out their cons. So share this information as widely as possible to make such scams virtually impossible.

Oil India Limited, a government of India-owned enterprise headquartered at Duliajan in Assam is facing its “biggest cyberattack in recent years”, with perpetrators asking for $75,00,000 (about INR 57 Cr) in Bitcoin as ransom through a note.In an FIR lodged with the Duliajan Police Station in Upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district on Tuesday, OIL said its IT department detected the ransomware attack in one of the workstations of its geological and reservoir (G&R) department on April 10.

The public sector undertaking OIL and the government exchequer have incurred a huge financial loss due to the cyberattack - ransomware, as the business through the IT system has been seriously affected, OIL Manager (Security) Sachin Kumar said in the police complaint.
According to reports, the IB team is conducting an investigation into the matter, and has also reportedly taken into possession photographic evidences that are related to the case.
