Approximately 7,000 cyber-related complaints are registered daily on India's National Cybercrime Reporting Portal or NCRP, as per a report by Business Standard which cited data from Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre.
A significant portion of these complaints originate from Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos.
Not only this, Indians are facing substantial financial losses due to various scams, with reported losses totaling 7,061 crore rupees over recent months.
CEO of Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre said that about 12% of these losses, amounting to around 812.72 crore rupees, have been recovered. The government of India has issued a warning against cyber fraud which entails something called as digital arrest. The Union Home Ministry has issued an alert against cyber criminals who impersonate the police and other law enforcement officials, to extort money from the victims

As per the Home Ministry, the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCCRP)&nbsp; has received a large number of complaints regarding intimidation, blackmail, extortion and 'digital arrests' by cyber criminals posing as officials from police department, CBI, RBI, ED and other law enforcement agencies.
<h3>Digital Arrest</h3>
Cyber criminals call the victims informing that they have either sent or is the intended recipient of a parcel containing illegal goods, drugs, fake passports or any other contraband item. They also inform the victims that any person they know are in involved in a crime or an accident or is in their custody.&nbsp;
To compromise the fake case, these fraudsters then demand money. Sometimes the victims are also asked to remain visually available over skype or other video conferencing app. This is called 'Digital Arrest'
As per the Home Ministry, the cyber criminals use studios modeled on polic stations and government offices and wear uniforms.
Meanwhile, the ministry has said that it is closely working with other ministries and agencies to address the concerns and counter the criminals. As per Times of India, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre recently blocked over 1,000 skype IDs involved in such activities, in collaboration with Microsoft. The Ministry has also blocked SIM cards, Mobile devices and Mule accounts of the fraudsters.&nbsp;

Customer care number tampering and exploitation of android malware emerge as third major facets of cyber fraud in India

In 2023, Work from Home (WFH) and part-time job scams have emerged as the leading cyber crimes in India, surpassing illegal lending apps, according to the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), a division of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Rajesh Kumar, the CEO of I4C, highlighted these alarming trends during the Annual Press Conference held at the media center.
Kumar emphasized that cybercriminals predominantly target potential victims through digital ads, online messaging platforms, and bulk SMS. He urged the public to remain vigilant and steer clear of such fraudulent schemes. The I4C continuously works on identifying and halting these fraudulent activities upon receiving reports.
Following WFH scams, illegal lending apps rank as the second most prevalent tool utilized by scam artists to defraud individuals. These apps often operate from countries such as China, Cambodia, and Myanmar, prompting the Indian government to collaborate with foreign authorities to address cybercriminal activities. The CEO revealed that 595 suspicious apps have been blocked, while 395 instant loan apps approved by the RBI have been whitelisted. Moreover, measures such as reporting suspicious apps to tech giants like Google and Facebook and flagging mule accounts to financial institutions are undertaken to curb these scams.
Customer Care Number manipulation and Android malware constitute the third significant source of cyber fraud. This involves the use of fake customer care numbers or the installation of Android malware to pilfer credentials, such as OTPs, from unsuspecting individuals.
Furthermore, Rajesh Kumar highlighted the prevalence of impersonation and sextortion as other prevalent fraudulent tactics employed by cybercriminals. He disclosed that WFH scams dominate reported fraud cases, while sextortion operations are frequently traced to Mewat. Notably, approximately 19,000 sextortion cases were reported this year, although many instances go unreported due to various reasons.
The CEO stressed the importance of increased awareness and caution among the public to avoid falling victim to these cyber scams, urging individuals to report any suspicious activities promptly. Minister of State for Finance, Bhagwat Karad, shared that this system swiftly detects financial fraud, preventing fraudsters from siphoning off funds.
In response to queries about UCO Bank's accounts and a significant digital fraud, Karad mentioned that the bank had recovered Rs 705.31 crore out of the Rs 820 crore mistakenly transferred. Additionally, an FIR was lodged with the CBI on November 11 regarding this transfer and deposit discrepancy. There has been a huge evolution in the kind of online financial scams that we&rsquo;ve seen. And over time, its become more and more sophisticated making it that much more difficult but not impossible to spot. Especially now with the rise of artificial intelligence, its given a whole new dimension to the kind of scams that cyber criminals can do.
So the big question is, how do we keep ourselves and our money safe?
Distrust everything in cyberspace, no matter how genuine it seems and then verify, says cybercrime investigator Ritesh Bhatia. If you've been the victim of a financial cybercrime, then you must submit a complaint. Here are the steps to follow:

<li>Avoid reporting &amp; blocking a number immediately: When you report a number on whatsapp, you lose the messages and the evidence gets erased. Instead, block the suspicious number first.</li>
<li>Take screenshots of all the communication with that number.</li>
<li>Once you&rsquo;ve submitted a complaint, then report number.</li>
<li>Call 1930 as soon as possible, ideally within 30 to 60 minutes of discovering you've been defrauded.</li>
<li>Log on to cybercrime.gov.in &amp; submit complaint&nbsp; First 30-60 minutes most important</li>
<li>You will receive a call from local police station&nbsp; Visit police station, submit complaint&nbsp;</li>
</ol>
The first 30 to 60 minutes is extremely crucial. If you reach out for help during this time, there is a good chance that you might be able to get your money back, Bhatia says. | While financial institutions, regulatory bodies are all trying to ramp up cyber security, it is also just as important that we do our bit in protecting our hard-earned money from such scams.

G20 Summit: MHA issues cyber alert against targeted 'spear phishing'

As per the findings spear phishing will be the &ldquo;primary vector&rdquo; used to target individuals and organisations associated with the G20 Summit.

As India gears up to host G20 Summit in 2023, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has issued an alert over possible cyber attacks during the Summit.&nbsp;
According to an Indian Express report, MHA has shared a list of reported historically targeted G20 Summitsalong with potential attackers with all ministries and departments.
The ministry has reportedly also informed ministries about findings of country&rsquo;s premier cybersecurity agency, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In).

A group of 300 Indians have been held hostage in Myanmar and made do cybercrime activities. A report published by the Times of India said that the hostages were brought from different areas and were lured into illegal activities.
Out of 300 at least 60 hostages from Tamil Nadu reported TOI.
Times of India has reported that these individuals are being kept hostage in Myawaddy in Myanmar, and the area falls outside of Myanmar's jurisdiction. The area is controlled by ethnic armed groups.
As per the Times report, the news came into the limelight after Tamil hostage sent an SOS message requesting Union and Tamil governments for a rescue.
"Raja Subramanian, a fisherman from karaikalmedu appealed the district collector of Karaikal in Puducherry to rescue his son, one of the hostages in Myanmar" The times of India reported.
Quoting Sudhakar, Subramanian's elder son had shared the odd deal of his brother with TOI "Earlier this year, his manager said he was given a promotion and asked him to move to their Thailand office where from he along with others were taken illegally to Myanmar by road."
"People who have sent the SOS messages to their families had told them that they are being held hostage by 'Malaysian Chinese' and are making them work for long hours, anyone who denies doing this work gets the beating" TOI reported.
The Indian embassy in Yangong, earlier had cautioned people by issuing an advisory not to fall prey to such scams which offer jobs, The advisory issued on July 5 had cautioned against 'Unscrupulous elements offering jobs'. Quoting the persons with the knowledge of the matter quoted "30 persons have been rescued so far"

As per a Times of India report, over 300 Indians were conned by gangs engaged in hacking, online fraud and fake crypto activities. They were first promised jobs in Thailand and were then taken to Myanmar. The Indian govt has however pinned the number of Indians stuck in Myanmar at 80-90 with over 50 still needing help or rescue.&nbsp;
'The workers are lured with social media advertisements of highly lucrative data entry jobs in Thailand. Unfortunately, these workers are then illegally taken across the border to the Myawaddy area of Myanmar, which is difficult to access due to the local security situation,' ministry of external affairs
The Myawaddy area is not controlled by the Myanmar govt, it is run by ethnic armed groups,
As per a Times of India report, the situation came to light after some hostages sent an SOS message to the Indian govt saying they were being forced into cybercrime and were subjected to electric shocks on refusal. The men also said that were they being made to work 15 hours a day.
'We would urge Indian nationals to exercise extreme caution before taking up such job offers. It may also be mentioned that the visa on arrival scheme in Thailand does not permit employment,' Bagchi said.
The Indian embassy in Yangong, had also issued an advisory on July 5 cautioning Indians against 'unscrupulous elements offering jobs'.

Beware! Behind that WhatsApp message from a new number with your friend's profile picture could be a fraudster. WhatsApp scams have started cropping up in alarming numbers recently. And they're growing more and more audacious.
Recently, a senior IAS officer in Jammu and Kashmir claimed that he had become a victim of cyber fraud. Shahid Choudhary accused scamsters of impersonating him on WhatsApp by using his photograph. The criminals allegedly contacted Choudhary's friends and colleagues and sought financial help.
Days earlier, Chandigarh's police chief was targeted in a similar way. Fraudsters posed as Praveer Ranjan on WhatsApp and asked the DGP's acquintances to send Amazon gift cards.

In March, a similar scam took place in Kerala. A teacher in Kollam was duped of ₹14 lakh after fraudsters sent WhatsApp messages posing as Kerala's police chief. The teacher was told that she had won the lottery and would be booked if tax was not paid on the winnings. The number used to send the messages was reportedly registered in an Assam native's name.
Recent cases have highlighted at least 3 types of common scams which are perpetrated through WhatsApp and Facebook.
The first is WhatsApp hijacking. Scamsters try to log into their target's WhatsApp account by using that person's phone number. Then, to get the verification pin, the criminals pose as WhatsApp technicians. If the target shares the PIN, then scamsters gain access to the person's WhatsApp account. Subsequently, they send messages to the target's friends and family seeking money, or further OTPs.

The second type is the WhatsApp DP scam which we told you about earlier. For this, a WhatsApp account is created using a fake or virtual SIM. Then a government official's photograph is set as the profile picture. Subsequently, messages are sent to unsuspecting people seeking money or other favours.
Another type of scam involves fake Facebook accounts. In this, scamsters create fake accounts of their targets and then contact the target's friends and family. Covid troubles, and financial crisis are common excuses used by scamsters to seek money in this type of con.
With such cases emerging in various parts of the country, authorities have been spreading awareness and telling people how to stay safe.
Some of the basic precautions include not replying to messages from unknown numbers even if the profile picture is of a person whom you know. Do not transfer money without verifying the request offline with the person asking for help.
Do not share OTPs, passwords, bank details, and credit and debit card information under any circumstances. Do not install remote access apps, and do not click on suspicious links. Also, secure your social media accounts by enabling two-factor authentication.
Cyber criminals prey on people's lack of awareness to carry out their cons. So share this information as widely as possible to make such scams virtually impossible.

DragonForce has been associated with Pakistani hacking groups in the past.
Another group whose name has emerged is 1877. It is apparently a grouping of Iraqi hackers who seem to have partnered with DragonForce for OpsPatuk. 1877 group attacked the ICAR website, among others.
Then there is One Hat Cyber Team, a group of hackers who apparently belong to Indonesia. The One Hat Cyber Team hacked the website of Thane Police, and demanded an apology over the Mohammad controversy.
The targets of these cyber criminals have been varied. Some of the websites which were attacked include those of the Indian embassy in Israel, the Maharashtra Judicial Academy, Thane Police, National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, and Institute of Science, Nagpur.

Between January and March, India saw almost 60,000 phishing attempts, and over 30,000 tech support scams, according to the Norton study.

A senior police officer of Thane police's cyber cell told new agency ANI that website as now been restored and data has been recovered. According to the officer, the website was hacked around 4am on Tuesday. 
Meanwhile, Madhukar Pandey, the additional director general of Maharashtra Police's Cyber Cell told ANI that many hackers have united and hacked into several websites in the country due to the ongoing communal tensions in the country. He said that names of Malayasia and Indonesia are surfacing but they have no information whether these hackers are based out of India or not.

Niraj Bishnoi, the alleged mastermind and creator of the 'Bulli Bai' application, has confessed that he habitually hacked and defaced the websites of schools and universities of both India and Pakistan, police officials said on Saturday.
They also said that Bishnoi disclosed during interrogation that he was in touch with the person behind the 'Sulli Deals' app that was hosted on GitHub in July last year.
The Delhi police had arrested 21-year-old Bishnoi from Assam and claimed that it has solved the case which relates to hundreds of Muslim women being listed for 'auction' on the 'Bulli Bai' app on the Github platform.
