Budget 2023 may see a customs duty hike for a slew of non-essential items. As per an economic times report, a list of 35 items has been drawn up by the govt and are being examined for a possible hike in customs duty. Private jets, helicopters, high-end electronics, jewellery are some of the items that could become costlier.&nbsp;
One of the main reasons behind this move is to curb imports and encourage local manufactuing, giving a boost to 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiatives. In fact, import tariffs on a number of items have already been hiked in the past few years to support such initiatives.&nbsp; As per the economic times report, India's current account deficit reached a 9-year high of 4.4% of GDP for the July to Sept 2022 quarter.&nbsp;

Customs officials seized 61 kg of gold worth Rs 32 crore in separate operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport here, making it the highest value seizure by the department at the airport in a single day, an official said on Sunday. At least seven travellers, five men and two women, were arrested in the seizures that were made on Friday, the official said.
This is the highest seizure in a single day in the history of the customs at the Mumbai airport, he claimed.
In the first operation, four Indians returning from Tanzania were found carrying 1 kg gold bars, which were concealed in specially-designed belts with multiple pockets, the official said.
Officials recovered 53 kg of UAE-made gold bars, worth Rs 28.17 crore, from the belts that the passengers had worn around their torso, he said.
The belts were handed over to the travellers by a Sudanese national at Doha airport during transit time, the official said.
The four travellers were arrested and remanded to 14 days judicial custody by a court, he said.

Similarly, customs officials seized 8 kg gold valued at Rs 3.88 crore from three passengers who had arrived from Dubai, he said.
The trio, including two women, were carrying gold dust in wax form, he said.
The gold was ingeniously concealed in the waistline of the jeans the travellers had worn, the official said.
One of the women was is in her late 60s and was on a wheelchair, he said, adding that the trio were arrested and remanded to judicial custody.&nbsp;

The Jacob & Co watch, made of gold and studded with diamonds, is alone worth Rs 27.09 crore according to customs officials. 
Commissioner of customs at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport Zubair Riaz Kamili said it is the biggest seizure, in value terms, of commercial or luxury goods.
“In value terms, it is equivalent to seizing around 60 kgs of gold in one instance,” he added.
The accused passenger, an Indian national, was intercepted by the customs officials after his arrival from Dubai on Tuesday, an official statement said.
Besides these watches, a diamond-studded gold bracelet and an iPhone 14 Pro 256 GB having a total value of Rs 28.17 crore were also recovered from the passenger, said the statement issued by Delhi Customs.
The watches were seized and the passenger was arrested, it said.
A senior customs official said the accused passenger and his uncle have a retail outlet of expensive watches in Dubai with branches at other places in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
"He was carrying them for delivery to a high-profile client in Delhi. The passenger was to meet this client, said to be from Gujarat, at a five star hotel in Delhi. The client did not turn up for the meeting. So far, the accused has also not disclosed the name of the client saying he fears for his life," the official said, wishing anonymity.
Chief Commissioner, Delhi Customs Zone, Surjit Bhujabal said, “Alert customs officers at Delhi Airport has made this (seizure) possible in spite of having such high passenger traffic.
“Indian Customs have always ensured maximum facilitation with minimal disturbance to genuine passengers and simultaneously ensuring to safeguard of economic frontiers by curbing smuggling,” Bhujbal said.

Kerala gold smuggling case: main accused gets bail in Custom case

PTI,&nbsp;Kochi:&nbsp;Swapna Suresh, the prime accused in the gold smuggling case in Kerala, was on Monday granted bail by a court here in a case registered by the Customs as the agency did not file a charge sheet within the stipulated period of 60 days.
Suresh, however, will continue to remain behind bars as she is an accused in the alleged terror link of the gold smuggling case probed by the National Investigation Agency.
She is also an accused in a case registered by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the money trail of the illegal trade.
The special court on Economic Offences granted statutory bail to Suresh as the Customs (Preventive) Commmissionerate did not file a charge sheet within the stipulated period of 60 days.
According to the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), an accused is entitled to default bail if a charge sheet is not filed within 60-90 days as per the offence.
Earlier, the other key accused in the case, including Rameez and Sandeep Nair, were also granted default bail in the case being investigated by the Customs.
The smuggling came to the fore when Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate, Kochi, seized 30 kg of gold worth Rs 14.82 crore found camouflaged in diplomatic baggage from the UAE on July 5.
