The Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court has expressed hope that the Centre will take an appropriate decision to ban cow slaughter and declare it as a "protected national animal".
"We live in a secular country and must have respect for all religions. In Hinduism, the belief is that the cow is the representative of divine and natural beneficence. Therefore it should be protected and venerated," Justice Shamim Ahmad said on February 14, dismissing a plea seeking the quashing of criminal proceedings against a person under the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1955.
The petitioner, Barabanki resident Mohammad Abdul Khaliq, had pleaded that the police booked him without any evidence and hence the proceedings pending against him in the court of additional chief judicial magistrate should be quashed. Dismissing the plea, the bench held that from the facts on record, a prima- facie case was made out against the petitioner.
"Anyone who kills cows or allows others to kill them is deemed to rot in hell for as many years as there are hairs upon his body. Likewise, the bull is depicted as a vehicle of Lord Shiva: a symbol of respect for the male cattle."

Latest information as per police sources in the Bhiwani 'double murder' case say, two groups of 'cow vigilantes' were involved in the murder of Junaid and Nasir, residents of Rajasthan's Bharatpur. Theirburnt bodies were found in a SUV in Haryana on Feb 17, NDTV reported.&nbsp;
As per the report, the first group beat Junaid and Nasir and took them to police for arrest on charges of cow smuggling, but after the police refused to arrested them as they were badly injured due to beating, the second group stepped and took over the situation.&nbsp;
Citing police sources, the NDTV report said, the second group then took both men in the car, drove for 20 hours, around 200kms throught districts of Haryana, and possibly killed them somewhere on the way before disposing their bodies in Bhiwani.&nbsp;

The Animal Welfare Board of India has issued a notice appealing to people to celebrate "Cow Hug Day" on February 14 to spread "positive energy" and encourage "collective happiness", officials said on Wednesday.
Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14 every year.
"All cow lovers may celebrate February 14 as Cow Hug Day keeping in mind the importance of mother cow and make life happy and full of positive energy," read the notice issued by the board under the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
The notice further said hugging cows will bring "emotional richness" and increase "individual and collective happiness".

The notice has been issued with approval of the competent authority, the officials said.

An ambulance service for sick and injured cows was inaugurated in Assam's Dibrugarh district.
The service, to be run by Gopal Gaushala, was inaugurated by Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu on Friday. The 'gaushala' or cow shelter had also set up a hospital for cows in 2020.
"The ambulance service will pave the way for the speedy treatment of seriously ill and injured cows. I am happy that the 'gaushala' is improving the standard of treatment of injured and sick cows," Pegu said.
Gopal Gaushala president Nirmal Beria claimed it was the first cow ambulance service in the entire Northeast.
"We faced a lot of trouble in bringing the sick cows to the shelter, so this ambulance service was started," he said.
"On several occasions, we could not save sick cows but now we hope that the ambulance service will help," he added.
The ambulance was brought in from Ahmedabad and is fitted with a hydraulic lift.

Alam was allegedly beaten to death, and then buried in a ditch, as per news reports. The alleged killers also poured petrol on the body and tried to burn it, according to some accounts. They reportedly sprayed salt on the corpse to make it decay faster.

You might think that these are the main election issues this season in India's biggest state.
Not really. While there may be a cacophony of divisive and charged issues to distract the voters, the biggest poll issue in UP, especially as voting moves eastwards, is the Big Bull.
Yes, stray cattle has emerged as one of the main issues.
And the BJP knows it. That's why even the Prime Minister had to acknowledge and address it at a recent rally in Unnao.
PM Modi promised a new policy to address “chhutta jaanvaron se pareshani (stray animal trouble)” after March 10, when the results of the ongoing polls are out.
Stray cattle menace in UP is the direct result of Yogi government's strict implementation of the slaughter ban on cow and its progeny.
Increasing attacks by cow vigilantes on cattle traders have meant that cattle trade has become risky and farmers are forced to let old and non-milking cattle loose on the roads.
Reports after reports have shown that farmers are at the receiving end of the stray cattle menace.
In a number of places they are forced to hold night vigils to save their crops from the "chhutta saand".
The stray cattle problem is acute in Eastern UP as the Western part of the state is more of buffalo belt, while East has more cows and its progeny.
According to Centre's response in Lok Sabha in February, the stray cattle population in UP shot up from 10 lakh in 2012 to 12 lakh in 2019.
Yogi government's response to the crisis has been to build gaushalas and fund them. But clearly it has fallen way short as thousands of cattle have taken over streets and fields of Uttar Pradesh.
According to the UP govt, there are 5,664 gaushalas in the state that house nearly 7.8 lakh cows, which means there are at least 4 lakh stray cattle roaming loose in the state.
The Yogi government has ramped up spending on cattle massively - from 203 crore in 2019-20 to 424 crore in 2021-22.
These gaushalas are given Rs 30 per animal per day to feed the cattle and Rs 6,000 per month for labour charge.
Several reports have shown that many of these gaushalas have come up in the last couple of months as BJP sensed anger over the cattle menace among the voters.

Not really. While there may be a cacophony of divisive and charged issues to distract the voters, the biggest poll issue in UP, especially as voting moves eastwards, is the Big Bull.

And the BJP knows it. That's why even the Prime Minister had to acknowledge and address it at a recent rally in Unnao.

Stray cattle menace in UP is the direct result of Yogi government's strict implementation of the slaughter ban on cow and its progeny.
Increasing attacks by cow vigilantes on cattle traders have meant that cattle trade has become risky and farmers are forced to let old and non-milking cattle loose on the roads.
Reports after reports have shown that farmers are at the receiving end of the stray cattle menace.
In a number of places they are forced to hold night vigils to save their crops from the "chhutta saand".
The stray cattle problem is acute in Eastern UP as the Western part of the state is more of buffalo belt, while East has more cows and its progeny.
((GFX)) According to Centre's response in Lok Sabha in February, the stray cattle population in UP shot up from 10 lakh in 2012 to 12 lakh in 2019.

Yogi government's response to the crisis has been to build gaushalas and fund them. But clearly it has fallen way short as thousands of cattle have taken over streets and fields of Uttar Pradesh.
((GFX)) According to the UP govt, there are 5,664 guashalas in the state that house nearly 7.8 lakh cows, which means there are at least 4 lakh stray cattle roaming loose in the state.
The Yogi government has ramped up spending on cattle massively - from 203 crore in 2019-20 to 424 crore in 2021-22.

These gaushalas are given Rs 30 per animal per day to feed the cattle and Rs 6,000 per month for labour charge.

Residents and farmers of Akoda town drove about 700 to 800 cows into Akoda Nagar Parishad's compound on Monday and locked them, officials said on Tuesday.
Residents have claimed that the stray cattle had been destroying their crops, and were angry that they were not being sent to a gaushalas.

The Uttar Pradesh government is all set to start an ambulance service for cows suffering from serious diseases.&nbsp; .
State Dairy Development, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Minister Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary&nbsp;on Sunday said&nbsp;that 515 ambulances are ready for the novel scheme, probably the first in the country.
"Just like the 112 emergency service number, the new service would pave the way for speedy treatment of seriously ill cows," the minister told reporters in Mathura.
An ambulance with a veterinary doctor and two assistants would arrive within a span of 15 to 20 minutes of requesting the service, he said.
Under the scheme slated to begin by December, a call centre will be set up at Lucknow for receiving complaints, the minister stated.

Why just potty-train a child when you can now potty-train a cow! As per a new study published in the journal Current Biology, scientists have found that it is&nbsp;possible to toilet-train cows.&nbsp;
This is no bizarre experiment and has a reason behind it. The study highlighted that cattle excreta leads to greenhouse emissions and soil and water contamination. The ammonia&nbsp;from cow urine seeps into the soil and the microbes convert it into nitrous oxide which is a greenhouse gas.&nbsp;
Due to this reason, training cows to urinate in a designated area has for long been the most sought-after option to help save the environment.&nbsp;
For the experiment, 16 calves were made to go through individual toilet training sessions.&nbsp;The researchers used the MooLoo approach wherein calves were taught to urinate in a toilet area in the barn. Just like how toddlers are taught using a reward-based training method, so were these calves rewarded with both food and mild&nbsp;punishment.&nbsp;&nbsp;
It was observed that out of the total 16 calves, 11 were successfully toilet trained. The same team of researchers is now working towards developing an automated system that may be used to train calves without the farmer's involvement.

The HC further noted that it is not only Hindus who have understood the importance of cows, Muslim rulers also considered it as an important part of India's culture during their reign.
For example, Babur, Humayun and Akbar prohibited the sacrifice of cows in their religious festivals, the court said.
The ruler of Mysore, Hyder Ali, made cow slaughter a punishable offence, the HC added.

Speaking at the launch of a nationwide campaign ''Kamdhenu Deepawali Abhiyan'', which is aimed at promoting cow dung products, Kathiria said: "Cow dung will protect everyone, it is anti-radiation... It is scientifically proven...This is a radiation chip that can be used in mobile phones to reduce radiation." Hear it to believe it.
