Although the current resurgence has not yet reached the infection peaks experienced over the past two years, increased viral loads detected in sewage and a rise in Covid-related medical consultations and hospitalizations indicate widespread transmission in Hong Kong, a city with over 7 million residents.
Similarly, Singapore has heightened its state of alert. For the first time in nearly a year, Singapore's health ministry released an update on infection numbers, revealing a 28% increase to 14,200 cases in the week ending May 3, compared to the previous week. Concurrently, daily hospitalizations have surged by approximately 30%. Singapore now reports case updates only during notable spikes.
Singapore&rsquo;s health ministry noted that while waning population immunity might contribute to the uptick in cases, there is no evidence suggesting that the circulating variants are more transmissible or lead to more severe illness than previous strains observed during the pandemic.
The increase in cases in Hong Kong and Singapore mirrors a broader rise in Covid-19 across Asia, with waves of the now-endemic virus occurring periodically. Health officials urge the public to maintain up-to-date vaccinations and remind high-risk groups to receive booster doses.
Unlike other respiratory viruses that typically become more active in colder months, the current Covid-19 surge aligns with the onset of summer in the northern hemisphere, illustrating the virus's capacity to affect a significant portion of the population regardless of warm weather conditions.
The outbreak's impact is also felt in the entertainment sector, as Hong Kong singer Eason Chan contracted Covid-19, forcing him to cancel scheduled concerts in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, according to an official Weibo announcement on Thursday.
In China, Covid-19 is expected to reach levels seen in last summer's peak, based on data from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The Covid test positivity rate more than doubled among patients seeking diagnostics at hospitals across mainland China in the five weeks leading up to May 4.
In Thailand, the Department of Disease Control reported two cluster outbreaks this year, with cases rising notably after the April Songkran festival, which attracts large crowds.

Experts have advised people with the post-Covid syndrome to watch out for&nbsp;persistent&nbsp;symptoms like&nbsp;shortness of breath, chest pain, leg pain and swelling, persistent abdominal pain&nbsp;and consult a doctor right away.&nbsp;

ICMR&rsquo;s Covid-19 task force has advised&nbsp;people&nbsp;to wait at least six weeks after complete recovery&nbsp;from Covid-19&nbsp;before undergoing any&nbsp;elective&nbsp;surgeries.&nbsp;Waiting six weeks for non-urgent procedures is important to ensure faster healing and convalescence post-surgery.&nbsp;However,&nbsp;the discretion to perform urgent and necessary procedures is entirely dependent on your health provider.&nbsp;&nbsp;
According to the ICMR, you must wait 102 days for re-examination&nbsp;after recovering from the virus. The reason for this has been attributed to the presence of a "non-viable dead-virus particle" that remains in the body for some time. These virus residues cannot spread disease but can give a false-positive result.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Experts believe that the effect of surgery on patients recovering from the virus may vary and will depend on their health. Shortness of breath, heart pain and fatigue are common in such patients and can be seen up to 60 days after recovery.&nbsp;&nbsp;
