As many as 312 cases of Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been found in India so far, out of which Kerala has reported 147.

A total of 312 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been detected in the country so far, with about 47 per cent of them recorded in Kerala, according to the INSACOG's data updated on Tuesday.
Ten states and Union territories have so far detected the presence of the JN.1 sub-variant of the virus.
These states are Kerala (147), Goa (51), Gujarat (34), Maharashtra (26), Tamil Nadu (22), Delhi (16), Karnataka (eight), Rajasthan (five), Telangana (two) and Odisha (one), according to the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG).
The INSACOG's data showed 279 Covid cases recorded in the country in December had the presence of JN.1, while 33 such cases were detected in November.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified JN.1 as a separate "variant of interest" given its rapidly-increasing spread, but said it poses a "low" global public health risk.
The JN.1 sub-variant of the coronavirus was previously classified as a variant of interest (VOI) as part of the BA.2.86 sub-lineages, the parent lineage that is classified as a VOI, the world body said.
However, in recent weeks, JN.1 cases continued to be reported from multiple countries and its prevalence has rapidly increased globally.
The Centre has asked states and Union territories to maintain a constant vigil amid an uptick in the number of Covid cases and the detection of the JN.1 sub-variant in the country.
India has recorded 573 new coronavirus infections, while the active cases stood at 4,565, according to data released by the Health ministry on Tuesday.

People have also been asked to maintain social distancing in offices and public places and to avoid unnecessary gathering and visiting crowded places.

"People must ensure compulsory wearing of facemasks in offices, workplaces and public places, including public transport," District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) CEO Santosh Sukhadeve said in an official order.
The order also asked people to maintain social distancing in offices and public places.
"The general public shall avoid unnecessary gathering and visiting crowded places.
All Heads of departments (HoDs) of Leh district and all sub-divisional magistrates shall ensure the compliance of this order," Sukhadeve said.
The chief medical officer will ensure rigorous surveillance and submit daily status reports on COVID-19 to the DDMA, he said.&nbsp;

A total of 63 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been detected till Sunday, with Goa reporting the highest number of cases, Health Ministry sources said on Monday.

Karnataka crossed the 100-mark in terms of fresh cases as it registered 104 new infections.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease across the country has increased to 4,44,71,545, and the national recovery rate stands at 98.81 per cent, according to the health ministry's website.
The case fatality rate stands at 1.19 per cent.
According to the ministry's website, 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines have been administered in the country so far.

A new strain of the coronavirus is being linked to a rise in cases in a multiple countries. JN.1 was first detected in Israel and Denmark in July this year. The World Health Organisation has received over 7000 genome sequences of JN.1 from 41 countries.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, JN.1 accounted for 15-29% cases of Covid-19 in the US as of December 8. The World Health Organisation has classified it has a &lsquo;Variant of Interest&rsquo; due to its rapidly increasing spread but has said that it poses a low risk. It also said that current vaccines are effective against the new strain but added that the JN.1 has increased immunity-evading capability. &nbsp;In India, JN.1 has been detected in three states. According to the Health Ministry data, 19 cases were detected in Goa and one each in Kerala and Maharashtra till December 21.
The Indian government has issued advisories to the state governments and stressed on the need to be alert. It has however said that there is no need to panic and that the new strain is not an immediate cause for concern.
The Health Ministry asked people to maintain respiratory hygiene, wear masks in enclosed and crowded spaces and wash their hands frequently. &nbsp;

Kerala reported 265 fresh COVID-19 infections and one death due to the disease in the last 24 hours, according to data on the Union Health Ministry website on Friday.
Of the 328 coronavirus infections reported nationwide till 8 am today, 265 were from Kerala, taking the active cases in the state to 2,606, as per the website.
With one death reported in the state, the total number of people who have died due to coronavirus in Kerala since its outbreak three years ago reached 72,060.
The number of people who were cured, discharged, or migrated in the last 24 hours after being diagnosed with the infection stood at 275. With that, the total number of cases under this category rose to 68,37,689 till date.
The state reported 300 new COVID-19 infections and three deaths due to the disease on Thursday.
On Tuesday, Health Minister Veena George reassured the people of the state that despite the rise in COVID cases in Kerala, there is no cause for alarm. The hospitals are adequately equipped to manage virus infections, she said.

Dr NK Arora, Chairman of India's Covid-19 Working Group of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation, said that the latest cases are part of the third wave caused by the Omicron variant of the virus.
Speaking to news outlet NDTV, he said that there is no need to worry, as new infections are mild in severity, and chances of serious illness are low.
