Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a televised address to the nation on Saturday night, announced that vaccination against Covid-19 for children between 15-18 years will start from January 3. He ahd also announced "precaution dose" for healthcare and frontline workers from January 10.
The decisions came amid rising Covid cases linked to the Omicron variant of the virus.
The precaution dose will also be available for citizens above 60 years of age and with comorbidities on the advice of their doctor from January 10 next year as well, the prime minister had said.
"Bharat Biotech's Covaxin is the only COVID-19 vaccine which will be administered, for now, to children in the age group of 15-18 years who will be inoculated from January 3. The estimated population to be covered in this category is seven to eight crores," an official source said.
Zydus Cadila's vaccine ZyCoV-D got emergency use authorisation from the drug regulator on August 20, making it the first vaccine that could be administered in the age group of 12-18 years in the country. But it has not yet been introduced in the country's inoculation programme, even for adults.
The indigenously developed ZyCoV-D is the world's first DNA-based needle-free Covid-19 vaccine.

Two doses of Covaxin are 50 per cent effective against symptomatic disease, according to the first real-world assessment of India's indigenous Covid-19 vaccine published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal.
Results of an interim study recently published in The Lancet showed that two doses of Covaxin, also known as BBV152, had 77.8 per cent efficacy against symptomatic disease and present no serious safety concerns.
The latest study assessed 2,714 hospital workers at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi, from April 15–May 15, who were symptomatic and underwent RT-PCR test for Covid-19 detection.
Researchers noted that the Delta variant was the dominant strain in India during the study period, accounting for approximately 80 per cent of all confirmed Covid-19 cases.
Covaxin, developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the National Institute of Virology, Indian Council of Medical Research (NIV-ICMR), Pune, is an inactivated whole virus vaccine administered in a two-dose regimen, 28 days apart.
In January this year, Covaxin was approved for emergency use in India for people aged 18 and above. The World Health Organization (WHO) added the vaccine to its list of approved emergency use COVID-19 vaccines earlier this month.
The latest study was conducted during India's second Covid-19 surge and in healthcare workers who were primarily offered Covaxin.
"Our study offers a more complete picture of how BBV152 (Covaxin) performs in the field and should be considered in the context of COVID-19 surge conditions in India, combined with the possible immune evasive potential of the Delta variant," said Manish Soneja, Additional Professor of Medicine at AIIMS New Delhi.
"Our findings add to the growing body of evidence that rapid vaccine rollout programmes remain the most promising path to pandemic control while public health policies must continue to include additional protective measures, such as mask-wearing and social distancing," Soneja said in a statement.

"More good news for Indian travellers to the UK. From 22 November travellers fully vaccinated with a Covid-19 vaccine recognised by WHO for Emergency Use Listing, including Covaxin, will not have to self-isolate; so joining those fully vaccinated with Covishield," Alex Ellis, British High Commissioner to India, said on Twitter on Monday.
The changes will come into effect at 4 am on November 22.

"The red list and quarantine system remain vital in protecting our borders and as we've said, we will not hesitate to take action by adding countries to the red list if necessary," UK Health Secretary Sajid Javid said.
The UK government has also simplified the travel rules for all under-18s coming to England. They will now be treated as fully vaccinated at the border and will be exempt from self-isolation requirements on arrival, day-8 testing and pre-departure testing. They will only be required to take one post-arrival test and a confirmatory free PCR test if they test positive.

The findings were compared with those from a group of 25,800 adults in India and it suggested similar protection in children to that demonstrated in adults, the company said.
In the clinical trial with 526 children, there were no serious adverse events or hospitalisations but the study's sample size may not have been large enough to detect rare side effects.

The announcement by the WHO came after the Technical Advisory Group (TAG), an independent advisory committee of the world body recommended Emergency Use Listing(EUL) status for Covaxin, and days after the TAG sought "additional clarifications" from Bharat Biotech on October 26 to conduct a final "risk-benefit assessment" of the vaccine for global use.
Emergency Use Listing contributes to vaccine equity, by enabling countries to expedite their own regulatory approval to import and roll out vaccines, he said.
"We continue to call on manufacturers of vaccines that already have WHO Emergency Use Listing to prioritize COVAX, not shareholder profit," Tedros said.
"We encourage all vaccine manufacturers who have not yet received Emergency Use Listing to contact WHO to discuss how to accelerate the process through rolling submissions," he said.

Some of India's private hospitals have cancelled orders for Russia's Sputnik V vaccine as they struggle to sell COVID-19 shots. The cancellation comes amid surging supplies of free doses of other vaccines offered by the government.

Some of India's private hospitals have reportedly cancelled orders for Russia's Sputnik V vaccine as they struggle to sell COVID-19 shots. The cancellation comes amid surging supplies of free doses of other vaccines offered by the government.
Some industry officials have said that low demand and the extremely cold storage temperatures required have prompted few hospitals to cancel orders for Sputnik V.
A senior medical official at Bharati Vidyapeeth Medical College and Hospital in Pune said barely 1% of the people wanted to go for Sputnik, while for others any Covid jab would work.
Since a June launch event by Dr Reddy's Laboratories, only 943,000 doses of Sputnik V have been administered by hospitals, a fraction of the national total of more than 876 million.
AstraZeneca vaccine, which can be stored in regular refrigerators, unlike Sputnik V, which needs temperatures of -18 degrees Celsius is the major player in India&rsquo;s inoculation drive
Sputnik vaccine is also as much as 47% more expensive than AstraZeneca in the private market.

Meanwhile, Bharat Biotech said on Friday that it has submitted all the data to WHO for emergency use listing of Covaxin and is now awaiting feedback.
However, the company said that it did not find it &ldquo;appropriate&rdquo; to comment on the approval process and its timeline.
