Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin maker Bharat Biotech on Thursday said there was no external pressure on the firm to speed up its development.
In a press release, the vaccine maker said with several hundred million doses administered worldwide, Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin has demonstrated an excellent safety record with minimal adverse events and no vaccine associated cases detected for myocarditis or thrombocytopenia.
Refuting some media reports around the approvals for Covaxin, the vaccine maker said it condemns the "targeted narrative" against the vaccine put forth by a select few individuals and groups who have no expertise in vaccines or vaccinology, the firm said.
"There was no external pressure to accelerate development of Covaxin," it said, adding the pressure was all internal to develop a safe and effective vaccine for the Covid-19 pandemic, to save lives and livelihoods in India and globally.
The Union Health Ministry on Thursday termed as "misleading" and "fallacious" media reports which claimed that regulatory approval for Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin was rushed due to political pressure.
It said scientific approach and prescribed norms were adhered to in approving Covid-19 vaccines for emergency use authorisation.
There have been media reports claiming that Bharat Biotech, manufacturer of the indigenous Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin, &ldquo;had to skip certain processes&rdquo; and &ldquo;speed&rdquo; up clinical trials due to political pressure, the ministry said.

The reports further claimed that there were several irregularities in the three phases of the clinical trials conducted for the vaccine.
"These media reports are completely misleading, fallacious and ill-informed.It is clarified that Government of India and the national regulator i.e. Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation have followed a scientific approach and prescribed norms in approving Covid-19 vaccines for emergency use authorisation," the ministry stated.

It started with giving Covid-19 jabs to adolescents in the age group of 15-18 years from January 3 followed by&nbsp;children aged 12-14 on March 16.

The approval by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) comes following recommendations by the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) on COVID-19 of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation(CDSCO).
The SEC had last week reviewed the application of both the companies seeking emergency use authorisation for Corbevax and Covaxin for use in children of five to 12 years and&nbsp;six to 12 years age group, respectively.
Biological E's Corbevax is being used to inoculate children against COVID-19 in the age group of 12 to 14 years. Covaxin has been granted Emergency Use Listing (EUL) by the DCGI for the age group of 12 to 18 years on December 24, 2021.
India began inoculating children aged 12-14 on March 16.&nbsp; The countrywide vaccination drive was rolled out on January 16 last year with healthcare workers getting inoculated in the first phase. Vaccination of frontline workers started from February 2 last year.
The next phase of COVID-19 vaccination commenced on March 1 last year for people over 60 years of age and those aged 45 and above with specified co-morbid conditions.
India launched vaccination for all people aged more than 45 years from April 1 last year. The government then decided to expand its vaccination drive by allowing everyone above 18 years of age to be inoculated against the viral disease from May 1 last year.
The next phase of vaccination commenced on January 3 for adolescents in the age group of 15-18 years.
India began administering precaution doses of vaccines to healthcare and frontline workers and those aged 60 and above with comorbidities from January 10.&nbsp; Precaution doses of COVID-19 vaccines to all aged above 18 years were allowed at private vaccination centres from April 10.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to news agency PTI, Covaxin and Covishield will soon be available at hospitals and clinics for people to buy. 
Gradually, the vaccine will be available in the market at a price lower than at what it was being sold earlier at private hospitals, the report added. 
The health minister also clarified that govt's free vaccination drive will continue even after the vaccines are made available in the regular market.

Amid calls for wider availability of <a href="https://www.editorji.com/story/astrazeneca-testing-booster-shot-against-covid-beta-variant-1624843914814">Covid booster shots</a>, an expert panel of the government has recommended&nbsp;<a href="https://www.editorji.com/story/know-your-vaccines-how-do-sputnik-v-covaxin-and-covishield-work-1618306290653">Covaxin and Covishield</a> for full use. Both the vaccines were cleared for emergency use a year ago.
The approval will boost India fight against Covid as the vaccines are expected to be widely available soon at hospitals and clinics registered with the government portal CoWIN.

India has started giving booster shots to health workers, frontline workers and senior citizens with illnesses. The recommended period, however, between the second and the third dose is currently nine months.
The move to give full approval to vaccines will perk up India's booster drive. The recommendation by the expert panel of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation has been sent to the top drug regulator DCGI.

The vaccines are unlikely to be available at the chemist shops anytime soon and people will still need to register on CoWIN platfomr for the third dose, reports quoting government sources said.
According to reports, 300 million doses of <a href="https://www.editorji.com/story/explained-should-gap-between-covid-19-doses-be-increased-1618295309957">Covishield</a> are presently stocked with the Serum Institute of India. Covishield accounts for 90% of vaccinations in India.
Both the SII and Covixin maker Bharat Biotech had asked govt to give full approval to their vaccines.

The medical research body on Sunday tweeted the benefits of getting Covaxin's precautionary dose. It said, "Reassuring information on safety and immunogenicity of a booster dose of Covaxin administered six months after completion of a two dose primary vaccination series with Covaxin."
The government has said that the third dose will be of the same vaccine as the first two and there will be no mix and match.
The government has started administering 'precaution' doses of Covid-19 vaccines to frontline workers, healthcare workers and senior citizens with co-morbidities.
On December 25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that from January 3, 2022 vaccination will start for the children in the age group of 15-18 years and further announced administration of precaution dose for healthcare and frontline workers from January 10, 2022.

The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) has given its approval for a study on mixing of Covaxin and Covishield Covid-19 vaccines in India, according to a report by India Today. This study and its clinical trials will be conducted by Christian Medical College, Vellore.
On July 29, a Subject Expert Committee of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) had recommended conducting this study. In its meeting, the expert committee granted permission to CMC, Vellore for conducting the Phase-4 clinical trial covering 300 healthy volunteers, for mixing of Covid-19 vaccines Covaxin and Covishield.
The purpose of this study is to assess whether a person can be given two different vaccine shots -- one each of Covishield and Covaxin -- to complete the vaccination course.
