Since the beginning of May, 66,866 people have died due to the coronavirus. However, it has been 12 days on May 17 that the cases have been on a decline.
Just on Tuesday, India recorded 4,329 fresh fatalities, while the single-day rise in cases is the lowest in 28 days. There is a disparity in numbers between the caseload and the deaths. This is because the death curve usually has a two-week lag. States report deaths from a few days to weeks earlier.
For example, Maharashtra recorded 1,019 deaths on Monday. However, 289 of these occurred between Saturday and Monday while 277 are from a week before that. Similarly, Karnataka reported 476 deaths. A few of these occurred in March while several are from April.
Apart from the administrative lag, deaths among covid patients have also been assessed to be caused by other ailments and hence not added to the covid data.
There is also the issue of underreporting. According to the Madhya Pradesh government there were 104 covid deaths in the state capital in the month of April. However, data from just three crematoriums and one graveyard in Bhopal show 2,567 bodies were cremated or buried following covid protocols from April 1-30.
April was the worst month in terms of infections reported but its impact on the mortality data can be felt now. The administrative lag amongst other factors is suggestive of an increase in the death count even if the cases drop in the near future.

This is the second straight day when the country has recorded over 4,000 Covid fatalities. Total number of deaths due to Covid has now cross 2.58 lakh. The tally of active cases stays over 37 lakh. The country is fighting its worst battle against the pandemic with an alarming rise in the number of cases, deaths worsened by a crumbling health infrastructure.

Unless Mumbai was assured of adequate vaccine doses for people in the 18-44 age group by the state govt, the BMC may not roll out the Covid-19 vaccination drive in the city on May 1. Principal Health Secretary Dr Pradeep Vyas was quoted by media reports saying "it was a policy under discussion" by the Maharashtra govt. BMC commissioner I S Chahal said, he was willing to face criticism for his stance, but the decision was 'practical'. Mumbai has an estimated 50-60 lakh population that falls in the 18-44 age bracket, and hence the tentative doses required would be 1.2 crore. To prevent overcrowding at vaccination centres in the city, the BMC has decided that starting May 1, govt and civic vaccination centres will vaccinate only citizens over 45 years of age, while those in the 18 to 44 years age group will be vaccinated at private hospitals.

The country, reeling under a second surge of the virus, breached the peak of 99,181 seen in a single day during the first wave of the pandemic last September. The number of cases recorded on Sunday are a sharp increase from the 92,961 reported a day earlier. In the past week, cases have grown 39%, the fastest rate for any country, turning India into the biggest current Covid hotspot. India is only the second country after the US to add more than 100,000 cases in a single day at any time during the pandemic.
