Have we crossed the point of no return? Is it, indeed, too late to save the world? This seemed to be the question on everyone&rsquo;s mind at the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP27, hosted this year at Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt. On a sombre and alarming note, Alok Sharma, the President of last year&rsquo;s conference, began with a wake up call for world leaders, reminding everyone of the havoc that climate change has wrought in the past year.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres also did not mince his words.
This rhetoric is not new. In October, the UN had said that current plans submitted by governments would lead to a temperature rise of about 2.5 degrees celsius, condemning the world to a catastrophic climate breakdown.

At COP26 in Glasgow, countries agreed to limit global heating to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, a threshold set out in the 2015 Paris climate agreement, which would avoid the worst ravages of climate change. Even a fraction of a degree more can lead to many more lives lost. China, the United States, Europe and India have all failed to reduce their emissions enough to meet their Paris Agreement goals.
The inequality that led to and is propagated by climate change was at the forefront of COP27. Poorer nations, which have historically contributed the least to climate change, but bear the brunt of its most devastating consequences today, are seeking more reparations from rich countries, many of which have grown their economies and amassed wealth by burning fossil fuels.
The Indian contingent at COP27 was led by Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav, who also campaigned for a new fund for addressing loss and damage. India has launched the LiFE - Lifestyle for Environment movement, which encourages people the world over to live a lifestyle that is in tune with our planet and does not harm it.

Climate cooperation has also been harmed by the Ukraine-Russia war, which has thrown global markets in turmoil in addition to causing widespread damage and loss of life in Ukraine. It has led to a global energy crisis and driven up the price of food, fuel and fertilisers.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the gathering virtually, stressing that there can be no global climate policy without peace.
The message from Climate scientists and experts is clear - time is running out, and fast. The goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5C, in order to avoid large scale damage, may already be unreachable. At COP27, most agreed that if humanity is to save itself, drastic action is required, and required immediately.&nbsp;

India on Sunday called as historic the UN climate summit in Egypt for securing an agreement on establishing a fund to address loss and damage due to climate change-induced disasters, saying "the world has waited far too long for this".&nbsp;
Making an intervention in the closing plenary of COP27, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav also said the world should not burden farmers with mitigation (reducing emissions of greenhouse gases) responsibilities.
"You are presiding over a historic COP where agreement has been secured for loss and damage funding arrangements including setting up a loss and damage fund. The world has waited far too long for this. We congratulate you on your untiring efforts to evolve consensus," Yadav said addressing the Egyptian presidency.
A fund to address loss and damage, which refers to destruction caused by climate change-induced disasters, was a long-pending demand of poor and developing countries, including India, and the key element at this year's UN climate summit.The success of the talks hinged on progress on this track.
Developed nations, particularly the US, had been opposing this new fund over fears that it would hold them legally liable for massive damages caused by climate change.

On the establishment of a four-year work program on climate action in agriculture and food security at COP27, Yadav said agriculture, the mainstay of livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers, will be hard hit from climate change. &nbsp;"So, we should not burden them with mitigation responsibilities. Indeed, India has kept mitigation in agriculture out of its NDCs (national plans to achieve Paris Agreement goals of limiting warming to 1.5 degree Celsius)," he said.
Opposing the efforts to extend the scope of mitigation to agriculture at COP27, India had Thursday said that rich nations do not want to reduce emissions by changing their lifestyles and are "searching for cheaper solutions abroad".
Agriculture accounts for around 17 percent of India's GDP and is the primary source of livelihood for about 58 per cent of its population.

Negotiators say they have struck a potential breakthrough deal on the thorniest issue of United Nations climate talks in Egypt: the creation of a fund for compensating poor nations that are victims of extreme weather worsened by rich countries' carbon pollution. Several cabinet ministers from across the globe told The Associated Press that agreement was reached on a fund for what negotiators call loss and damage. It's a big win for poorer nations which have long called for cash &mdash; sometimes viewed as reparations &mdash; because they are often the victims of climate disasters despite having contributed little to the pollution that heats up the globe. But other parts of a deal, outlined in a package of proposals put out earlier in the day by the Egyptian chairs of the talks, are still being hammered out as negotiators head into what they hope is their final session. There was strong concern among both developed and developing countries about proposals on cutting greenhouse gas emissions, known as mitigation. Officials said the language put forward by Egypt backtracked on some of the commitments made in Glasgow aimed at keeping alive the target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) since pre-industrial times. The world has already warmed 1.1 degrees Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit) since the mid 19th century. Some of the Egyptian language on mitigation seemingly reverted to the 2015 Paris agreement, which was before scientists knew how crucial the 1.5 degree threshold was and heavily mentioned a weaker 2-degree Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) goal, which is why scientists and Europeans are afraid of backtracking, said climate scientist Maarten van Aalst of the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre.

The US negotiations office, where special envoy John Kerry is sick with COVID-19, also declined to comment. China and the US are the two biggest carbon polluters. European negotiators said they were ready to back the deal but declined to say so publicly until the entire package was approved. The Egyptian presidency, which had been under criticism by all sides, proposed a new loss and damage deal Saturday afternoon and within a couple hours an agreement was struck but Norway's climate and environment minister Espen Barth Eide said it was not so much the Egyptians but countries working together. According to the latest draft, the fund would initially draw on contributions from developed countries and other private and public sources such as international financial institutions. While major emerging economies such as China would not initially be required to contribute, that option remains on the table and will be negotiated over the coming years. This is a key demand by the European Union and the United States, who argue that China and other large polluters currently classified as developing countries have the financial clout and responsibility to pay their way. An overarching decision that sums up the outcomes of the climate talks doesn't include India's call to phase down oil and natural gas, in addition to last year's agreement to wean the world from &ldquo;unabated&rdquo; coal.

India has opposed the developed world's efforts to extend the scope of mitigation to agriculture at the ongoing UN climate summit in Egypt, saying rich nations do not want to reduce emissions by changing their lifestyles and are "searching for cheaper solutions abroad", sources said on Thursday.
Expressing concern over the draft decision text on the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture, India said the developed countries are blocking a pro-poor and pro-farmer decision by insisting on expanding the scope for mitigation to agriculture, thereby compromising the very foundation of food security in the world, a source in the Indian delegation said.
"At every climate summit, the developed countries wish to change the goalposts of the international climate regime using diversionary means to dilute their responsibilities arising from their historical emissions.

"Annex-I countries, it may be recalled, owe the world a carbon debt of 790 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide (GtCO2), which is worth USD 79 trillion, even at the modest price of USD 100 per tonnes," India said.
"This year too, the developed countries are distracting attention from their excessive GHG emissions by emphasising reduction in agriculture emissions which are 'survival emissions' and not 'luxury emissions'," it said.
India made it clear that the world is facing a climate crisis today because of the excessive historic cumulative emissions by the developed nations.
It said these nations are "unable to reduce their emissions domestically by any worthwhile change in their lifestyles. Rather, they are searching for cheaper solutions abroad".
In most developing countries across the world, agriculture is practised by small and marginal farmers who till hard, toil hard and brave the vagaries of extreme weather and climate variability as well as the additional stress of climate change.
"By seeking to extend the scope of mitigation to agriculture, the developed countries are wanting the world agriculture, lands and seascapes to become a site of mitigation for their profligate, excessive emissions," it said.
India said there are no additional finance offers on the table by developed countries and the existing interim operating entities like Global Environment Facility and Green Climate Fund are being coaxed to handle their excessive emissions by turning agriculture into a site of mitigation.

Antonio Guterres said businesses as well as cities and regions should update their voluntary net zero pledges within a year to comply with the recommendations by UN experts, as he trained his sights on fossil fuel firms and "their financial enablers".

The UN expert panel, convened by Guterres after UN climate talks in Glasgow last year, set its sights on drawing a "red line" around greenwashing in net zero targets from companies, cities and regions.
A huge surge in decarbonisation pledges in recent months means that around 90 percent of the global economy is now covered by some sort of promise of carbon neutrality, according to Net Zero Tracker.

"It's very easy to make an announcement that you are going to be net zero by 2050. But you have to walk the talk and what we've seen is that there is not enough action," said Catherine McKenna, Canada's former environment and climate change minister, who led the panel.
"We have to do two things to reach net zero -- we need to drastically reduce emissions, and we need to invest in clean (energy)," she told AFP.
She added it was currently "extremely hard" to properly evaluate whether firms were cutting emissions and called for greater transparency.
The report lists a slew of recommendations, including calling on governments to begin putting in place binding regulations.

Developing countries will need close to $2trillion each year till 2030 to aid in cutting greenhouse gas emissions and cope with the rapid effects of climate change, according to new data.&nbsp;
It is necessary for the poorer countries to have access to this kind of funding to switch from fossil fuel usage, invest in renewable energy and other low-carbon technology while simultaneously coping with impacts of extreme weather, says a report commissioned jointly by the United Kingdom and Egyptian governments, presented at the ongoing UN climate summit in Egypt.&nbsp;
The report further states that half of the required financing can be sourced locally by strengthening domestic public money and capital markets, including large amounts of local finance that national development banks can mobilise.&nbsp;
External finance such as the World Bank and other multilateral development banks will also play a key role.&nbsp;
Climate economist Nicholas Stern was a lead author of the climate report.

'Most of the growth in energy infrastructure and consumption projected to occur over the next decade will be in emerging market and developing countries, and if they lock in dependence on fossil fuels and emissions, the world will not be able to avoid dangerous climate change, damaging and destroying billions of lives and livelihoods in both rich and poor countries,' said Stern, who wrote a landmark 2006 review of the economics of climate change.&nbsp;
While low-carbon economic growth will reduce greenhouse gas emissions it will also help billions of people in poor countries to come out of poverty and get employment opportunities.&nbsp;
Apart from sustainable economic growth, the money will also help the developing countries adapt to climate changes like building better infrastructure such as seawalls and early warning systems.
For more severe impacts of climate breakdown which countries cannot adapt to, known as loss and damage, the money will help to rescue, repair and help in bettering the social fabric.
Funds for addressing loss and damage has been a long-pending demand of poor and developing countries, including India but the issue has faced stiff resistance for the developed countries which have avoided discussions on it for over a decade.&nbsp;
Services such as health and education can be rebuilt of countries torn apart by extreme weather, such as devastating floods, droughts, storms and heatwaves, that is likely to worsen as a result of climate breakdown.

In his first major address on the world stage since taking charge at 10 Downing Street, the Indian-origin leader pointed to green energy investment as a "fantastic source of new jobs and growth" as he vowed to build on the &ldquo;room for hope&rdquo; created during the UK's presidency of COP26 in Scotland last November.
Sunak referenced a speech by the late Queen Elizabeth II to the COP26 summit last year, where she said there was "hope" for the climate if countries come together.
"She reflected how history has shown when nations come together in common cause, there is always room for hope. &ldquo;[Russian President] Putin's abhorrent war in Ukraine and rising energy prices across the world are not a reason to go slow on climate change &ndash; they are a reason to go faster," said Sunak, in his relatively short address at the summit being held in Sharm El Sheikh.
&ldquo;Listen to Prime Minister Motley of Barbados as she describes the existential threat posed by the ravages of climate change, or look at the devastating floods in Pakistan where the area underwater is the same size as the entire United Kingdom.
&ldquo;When you see 33 million people displaced, with disease rife and spreading through the water, you know it is morally right to honour our promises. But it is also economically right too. Climate security goes hand-in-hand with energy security," Sunak said.
Sunak called on nations to honour the promises made in Glasgow and direct public and private finance towards the protection of the planet, which would turn the struggle against climate change into a global mission for new jobs and clean growth.
"And we can bequeath our children a greener planet and a more prosperous future. That's a legacy we could be proud of. So, as we come together once again in common cause today, there really is room for hope. Together, let us fulfil it," he noted.
Earlier on Monday, he held a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit in Egypt, including his first in-person interaction with French President Emmannuel Macron and European Commission President Urusula Von Der Leyen.

Yadav said India has been working on strengthening end-to-end early warning systems for all hydro-meteorological hazards.
India is making swift progress in respect of early warning for other hazards such as heat waves, the minister said, adding that the country has made concerted efforts towards making early warnings impact-based, easily understandable and actionable by communities over the last few years.
He further said that the number of lives lost due to tropical cyclones has been minimised over the last 10 years, not only in India but also in all the countries in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea region for which the IMD issues tropical cyclone forecasts and advisories.

Earth has warmed more than 1.1 degrees Celsius since the late 19th century, with roughly half of that increase occurring in the past 30 years, the report shows.
Nearly 200 nations gathered in Egypt have set their sights on holding the rise in temperatures to 1.5C (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit), a goal some scientists believe is now beyond reach.
This year is on track to be the fifth or sixth warmest ever recorded despite the impact since 2020 of La Nina -- a periodic and naturally occurring phenomenon in the Pacific that cools the atmosphere.
"The greater the warming, the worse the impacts," said WMO head Petteri Taalas.
Surface water in the ocean -- which soaks up more than 90 percent of accumulated heat from human carbon emissions -- hit record high temperatures in 2021, warming especially fast during the past 20 years.
Marine heat waves were also on the rise, with devastating consequences for coral reefs and the half-billion people who depend on them for food and livelihoods.
Overall, 55 percent of the ocean surface experienced at least one marine heatwave in 2022, the report said.
Driven by melting ice sheets and glaciers, the pace of sea level rise has doubled in the past 30 years, threatening tens of millions in low-lying coastal areas.
"The messages in this report could barely be bleaker," said Mike Meredith, science leader at the British Antarctic Survey.

&nbsp;The United Nations&rsquo; climate change summit opened in Egypt on Sunday with the inclusion of &lsquo;loss and damage&rsquo; finance in the official agenda and India hoping that fair negotiations on it would follow.
Loss and damage is a term used to refer to the consequences of climate change that go beyond what people can adapt to, or when options exist but a community doesn&rsquo;t have the resources to access or utilise them.
Financing or a new fund for addressing loss and damage &ndash; for example money needed for relocating people displaced by floods &ndash; has been a long-pending demand of poor and developing countries, including India. But rich countries have avoided discussions on it for over a decade.
&ldquo;With the inclusion of this agenda item, India will be engaging constructively and actively on the subject during the course of discussions at COP27 and hoping that fair negotiations on loss and damage follow,&rdquo; read a blog post written by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav.
&ldquo;India welcomes adoption of agenda item &lsquo;Loss and Damage&rsquo; at COP27,&rdquo; the minister said.
The 27th edition of the Conference of Parties (COP) to UNFCCC will also see the country seeking clarity on the definition of climate finance.
At the talks, India will also emphasise that it is one of the few countries which has met the 2015 climate goals set in Paris, and stress on climate justice and sustainable lifestyles through Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s &lsquo;LiFE movement&rsquo; which stands for &ldquo;Lifestyle for Environment&rdquo;. LiFE stands for &ldquo;Lifestyle for Environment&rdquo;, a pro-people and pro-planet effort that seeks to shift the world from mindless and wasteful consumption to mindful and deliberate utilization of natural resources.
Yadav said India believes that climate action starts at the individual level and that PM Modi through the &ldquo;LiFE movement&rdquo; has provided a simple solution to the complex problem of climate change.
Yadav inaugurated the India Pavilion at the 27th Session of COP of the UNFCCC in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, on Sunday. COP27 is scheduled to run from November 6 to 18.
At this year&rsquo;s conference, developed countries are expected to push developing nations to further intensify their climate plans.
On the other hand, the developing countries would seek commitment to finance and technology needed to address climate change and resulting disasters.
The UN climate summit this year is being held in the shadow of the Russian aggression in Ukraine and the related energy crisis which has strained the capabilities of countries to urgently tackle climate change.

He said financial mechanisms under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, such as Global Environment Facility, Green Climate Fund and Adaptation Fund, are under-funded and are not able to mobilise or deliver funds for loss and damage due to climate change.

Sunak took to Twitter to reveal his plans after criticism from climate activists and within the government from Indian-origin COP27 President Alok Sharma, who said it was important for the prime minister to be present to show the UK&rsquo;s commitment on the issue of climate action.
The pressure mounted further as his ex-boss, former prime minister Boris Johnson, confirmed that he would be attending the summit scheduled between November 6 and 18.
"There is no long-term prosperity without action on climate change,&rdquo; tweeted Sunak.
"There is no energy security without investing in renewables. That is why I will attend COP27 next week: to deliver on Glasgow's legacy of building a secure and sustainable future," he said, with reference to the COP26 summit chaired by the UK in Scotland last November.
The Opposition Labour Party described the reversed decision to attend as Sunak being "dragged kicking and screaming into doing the right thing; embarrassing".
The Green Party called it a "screeching U-turn" and "an embarrassing mis-step on the world stage" to initially announce plans not to attend.
Earlier this week, Downing Street said Sunak&rsquo;s attendance at the summit was &ldquo;under review&rdquo; as progress was being made with Chancellor Jeremy Hunt on the preparation of a crucial economic statement scheduled for November 17.
Many world leaders, including US President Joe Biden and France's Emmanuel Macron, are due to go to the 27th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
India's Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav will lead an 18-member delegation at COP 27, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s attendance yet to be confirmed.

Sunak&rsquo;s decision to snub the COP27 talks, and to keep King Charles from attending, has angered and upset countries around the world, risking the UK&rsquo;s standing on the world stage and raising concerns over his government&rsquo;s commitment to tackling the climate crisis, the Guardian newspaper reported on Sunday.
"I can understand why the king was asked not to attend &ndash; keeping him out of the fray. However, as the principal UK policymaker and the Cop26 president, the PM should have led the summit. It seems as if they are washing their hands of leadership,&rdquo; the report quoted Carlos Fuller, Belize&rsquo;s ambassador to the UN, as saying.
Questioning Sunak&rsquo;s reason for not attending the summit, Mohamed Nasheed, speaker of the Maldives parliament and former president, said: &ldquo;[It&rsquo;s] very worrying that the UK thought there was anything more serious than climate change. You can count the pennies but might lose the pounds.&rdquo; Instead of attending COP27, Sunak will speak at a reception for business and environmental leaders to be hosted by the king at Buckingham Palace on Friday, two days before the climate talks begin.
The COP26 talks in Glasgow last November, headed by then UK prime minister Boris Johnson and chaired by cabinet minister Sharma ended with a global consensus on limiting temperature rises to 1.5C for the first time, a major diplomatic achievement that was widely lauded. King Charles had attended the climate change conference as Prince of Wales.
The Guardian report said Sunak's failure to attend the talks has raised concerns over the UK&rsquo;s stance on the climate crisis, with the government handing out new oil and gas licences and tax breaks for increasing fossil fuel production.
Quoting an unnamed Commonwealth diplomat, the report said, &ldquo;One hopes [Sunak&rsquo;s stance] is not a backsliding of the positions the UK has taken in recent years on both areas.&rdquo; It is unusual for the head of state of an important COP not to attend the handover. The UK still holds the presidency of the UN negotiations, until the reins are handed over to the Egyptian government at the COP27 summit in Sharm El-Sheikh.
This puts the British government in a key position in the long-running climate talks, and the prime minister would normally be expected to hold closed-door bilateral meetings with counterparts around the world, focusing on the climate but including other subjects, such as the Ukraine war and the global economic crisis, the report said.
The annual UN climate summits are designed to help governments agree steps to limit global temperature rises. The UK hosted last year's summit, COP26 in Glasgow.
The summit in Egypt is expected to focus on three main areas - reducing emissions, helping countries prepare for and deal with climate change, and securing technical support for developing countries for these activities, according to a BBC report.
