The Centre on Monday sought adjournment from the Delhi High Court for 3 petitions seeking recognition of same-sex marriage.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted before the court that as per a High Court circular on Covid, the court was hearing only &lsquo;extremely urgent matter&rsquo;.
Mehta said that the focus of the government is on &lsquo;real urgent issues&rsquo; and nobody is dying because they don&rsquo;t have a marriage certificate.
While the petitioners argued that the matters were sent by the Chief Justice&rsquo;s Bench to the present Bench, the Court adjourned the petitions till July 6th.
Even though homosexuality has been decriminalised under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, the state does not recognise same-sex marriages. The 3 petitions seek marriage equality under the Hindu Marriage Act, Special Marriage Act and Foreign Marriage Act. The Central government has opposed the petitions on grounds that there is no fundamental right to same-sex marriage.

National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah took a dig at Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Sunday over his remarks that Article 370 of the Constitution will not be restored, and urged him not to presume what the Supreme Court judges would decide on the matter. In a tweet, Omar wrote, that he doesn't expect him to restore anything, but unless he is suggesting the Supreme Court has surrendered its independence and takes dictation from the govt, he shouldn't presume to know what the judges will decide. Ravi Shankar Prasad, on Saturday said the special status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 will not be restored.

Kerala HC refuses to stay Thiruvananthapuram airport privatisation

PTI,&nbsp;Kochi:&nbsp;The Kerala High Court on Tuesday declined to stay the further proceedings in leasing out Thiruvananthapuram international airport to Adani Enterprises.
Considering an application by the Kerala government seeking the stay, the court adjourned the case for detailed hearing.
Directing the government to produce the documents before September 9, the bench said a detailed hearing in the matter will be held on September 15.
In its application, the state government said unless the stay is granted, it will be put to irreparable injury and hardship.
The state government filed the application in the court, after an all-party-meeting in the state demanded withdrawal of the Union Cabinet's decision last week to lease out the airport to Adani Enterprises.
Last year, the high court had dismissed the petition challenging the decision, terming it as not maintainable under Article 226 of the Constitution.
The state government then filed an appeal before the Supreme Court against the high court order.
The apex court set aside the judgement of the high court and the matter was remanded back to it for a decision on merit.
Referring to the top court directive, the state government said, "all further proceedings in relation to grant of lease with regard to operation, management and development of Thiruvananthapuram international airport to Adani Enterprises Ltd, is to be stayed pending disposal of the aforementioned writ petition."&nbsp;

PTI,&nbsp;New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday alleged that anti-national and anti-poor forces were spreading hatred and venom of violence in India and the influence of 'tanashahi' (dictatorship) on the country's 'lokshahi' (democracy) was rising.
She also said that the founding fathers of the country would have never imagined that the Constitution and democracy will be in danger 75 years after the Independence as "bad thinking is now dominating, freedom of expression is in danger and democratic institutions are being ruined".
Gandhi was addressing the foundation stone laying ceremony of the new Chhattisgarh Assembly building to be built in Nava Raipur, the upcoming capital city of the state, through a recorded video message in Hindi.
"For the past some time, an attempt is beingmade to derail our country. New challenges have come before our democracy. Today, the country stands at a crossroads. Anti- poor and anti-nation forces and those who rule by making people fight against each other have been spreading hatred and venom of violence," she said.
"Bad thinking is dominating good thinking, freedom of expression is in danger and democratic institutions are being ruined. The influence of 'tanashahi' has been increasing on 'lokshahi'," she added.
Without naming anyone, Gandhi further said, they want to suppress the voice of the people of the country.
"What do they want? They want people of the country, our youth, our tribal people, our women, our farmers, shopkeepers and small traders, jawans to keep their mouths shut," she said.
Two years later, the country will complete 75 years of Independence, Gandhi added.
"Father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi, former prime minister Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, G V Mavalankar (Speaker of Constituent Assembly of India), Dr B R Ambedkar and our other ancestors would have never imagined that after 75 years of Independence, the country will face such a difficult situation and our Constitution and democracy will be in danger," she said.
Extending wishes on the foundation stone laying ceremony, she said, "Today is an important day and we all should take a pledge to protect the foundation of democracy.
We should also take a pledge that till the time we are in power, we should take a decision keeping in view the interest of people standing at the end of a queue." "It should be remembered that the Constitution will not be saved by buildings rather it will be protected by emotions," she asserted.
Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi also attended the programme via video-conferencing from Delhi, officialssaid.
Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Chhattisgarh Assembly Speaker Charan Das Mahant and state ministers were present at the venue of the function in Nava Raipur.
