On International Democracy Day, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah attended a reading of the Preamble near the Vidhana Soudha, the state Assembly, on Friday.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and fellow cabinet members Dr G Parameshwara, Ramalinga Reddy, Eshwar Khandre, KJ George, and Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad also attended the Preamble reading event.
State minister for Social Welfare, HC Mahadevappa, said, "The citizens need to discharge their basic duties as are enshrined in our Constitution. Hence, across schools and colleges, the reading of the Preamble to the Constitution is being arranged to make children aware of the ideals and principles that went into making it while also informing them of the constitutional responsibilities."
According to sources, the government has made it mandatory for students and teachers at all educational institutions of the state to read the Preamble during the morning prayers and take an oath to adopt and incorporate the constitutional principles in their everyday lives.
"The Constitution was a gift to all the citizens from BR Ambedkar. It is a sacrosanct statute book stressing fairness and equality. Hence, there is an important purpose behind reading the Preamble. It will help our children understand the basic principles and ideas on which our country was founded," Mahadevappa said.

Chileans are voting in a plebiscite Sunday on whether to adopt a far-reaching new constitution that would fundamentally change the South American country.
The proposed charter is intended to replace a constitution imposed by a military dictatorship 41 years ago.
For months, opinion polls have shown a clear advantage for the rejection camp, but the difference has been narrowing, giving hope to the charter's supporters that they can pull out a victory.
&ldquo;We are clearly in a situation in which the result will be close,&rdquo; said Marta Lagos, head of MORI, a local pollster. &ldquo;The Chilean is a political animal who decides at the last minute.&rdquo; The outcome will have a resounding impact on President Gabriel Boric, 36, who has been one of the main proponents of the new constitution. Analysts say voters also likely view the vote as a referendum on Chile's youngest-ever president, whose popularity has plunged since taking office in March.

Then in 2021, they elected delegates to a constitutional convention. Amid the anti-establishment fervour of the time, Chileans largely chose people outside the traditional political establishment to draft the new constitution. It was the first in the world to be written by a convention split equally between male and female delegates.
After months of work, delegates came up with a 178-page document with 388 articles that, among other things, puts a focus on social issues and gender parity, enshrines rights for the country's Indigenous population and puts the environment and climate change centre stage in a country that is the world's top copper producer. It also introduces rights to free education, health care and housing.
The new Constitution would characterize Chile as a plurinational state, establish autonomous Indigenous territories and recognise a parallel justice system in those areas, although lawmakers would decide how far-reaching that would be.
In contrast, the current constitution is a market-friendly document that favours the private sector over the state in aspects like education, pensions and health care. It also makes no reference to the country's Indigenous population, which makes up almost 13% of the country's 19 million people.
&ldquo;This is a door to build a more just, more democratic society,&rdquo; said Elisa Loncon, an Indigenous leader who was the first president of the convention. &ldquo;It isn't as if Chile will wake up with all its political and economic problems automatically resolved, but it's a starting point.&rdquo; Hundreds of thousands of people took over a main avenue in Chile's capital Thursday night at the closing rally of the pro-charter campaign, a turnout that proponets say shows a level of excitement the polls do not reflect.
&ldquo;Polls have not been able to capture the new voter, and above all, the young voter,&rdquo; Loncon said.
Once the convention got to work, Chileans quickly began souring on the proposed document, with some worrying it was too far left. It is &ldquo;an imposition by leftist radicals on society at large,&rdquo; said Paulina Lobos, who has been campaigning against the proposed document.
Supporters say that was at least in part due to a flood of fake news that spread lies about the proposed constitution.
But it wasn't just about the document's contents. Chileans also grew frustrated at the convention delegates who often made headlines for the wrong reasons, such as one who lied about having leukemia and another who cast a vote while taking a shower.
&ldquo;An opportunity was missed to build a new social pact in Chile,&rdquo; said Sen. Javier Macaya, head of the conservative Independent Democratic Union party that is campaigning against the new constitution. &ldquo;We are defending the option to reject (the document) so we have a new chance to do things better.&rdquo; Macaya insists it is important for a new constitution to win approval by a broad margin &ldquo;through consensus and compromise.&rdquo; Although Chileans, including the country's political leadership, largely agree the dictatorship-era constitution needs to be tossed out, how that will be achieved if the current proposal is rejected remains to be seen.
&ldquo;If it's rejected, what is institutionalised is maintaining Pinochet's constitution &mdash; that constitution that no longer answers the needs of Chilean society,&rdquo; Loncon said.

With 96 per cent of the votes counted in Sunday's plebiscite, the rejection camp had 61.9 per cent support compared to 38.1 per cent for approval amid what appeared to be a heavy turnout with long lines at polling states. Voting was mandatory.
The approval camp conceded defeat, with its spokesman Vlado Mirosevic saying: &ldquo;We recognise this result and we listen with humility to what the Chilean people have expressed.&rdquo; The rejection of the document was broadly expected in this country of 19 million as months of pre-election polling had shown Chileans had grown wary of the document that was written up by a constituent assembly in which a majority of delegates were not affiliated with a political party.
&ldquo;Today we're consolidating a great majority of Chileans who saw rejection as a path of hope,&rdquo; said Carlos Salinas, a spokesman for the Citizens' House for Rejection. &ldquo;We want to tell the government of President Gabriel Boric... that 'today you must be the president of all Chileans and together we must move forward.&rdquo; Despite these expectations, no analyst or pollster had predicted such a large margin for the rejection camp, showing how Chileans were not ready to support a charter that would have been one of the most progressive in the world and would have fundamentally changed South America.

&ldquo;The constitution that was written now leans too far to one side and does not have the vision of all Chileans,&rdquo; Roberto Briones, 41, said after voting in Chile's capital of Santiago.
&ldquo;We all want a new constitution, but it needs to have a better structure.&rdquo; The result deals a major blow to Boric, who at 36 is Chile's youngest-ever president. He had tied his fortunes so closely to the new document that analysts said it was likely some voters saw the plebiscite as a referendum on his government at a time when his approval ratings have been plunging since he took office in March.
What happens now amounts to a big question mark. Chilean society at large, and the political leadership of all stripes, have agreed the constitution that dates from the country's 1973-1990 dictatorship must change.
The process that will be chosen to write up a new proposal still has to be determined and will likely be the subject of hard-fought negotiations between the country's political leadership.

As former civil servants, it is not normally our want to express ourselves in such extreme terms, but the relentless pace at which the constitutional edifice created by our founding fathers is being destroyed compels us to speak out and express our anger and anguish, the letter said.
The escalation of hate violence against the minority communities, particularly Muslims, in the last few years and months across several states - Assam, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, all states in which the BJP is in power, barring Delhi (where the union government controls the police) - has acquired a frightening new dimension, it said.
The former bureaucrats said they believe that the threat is unprecedented and at stake is not just constitutional morality and conduct; it is that the unique syncretic social fabric, "which is our greatest civilizational inheritance and which our Constitution is so meticulously designed to conserve, is likely to be torn apart".
"Your silence, in the face of this enormous societal threat, is deafening," the letter said.
"We appeal to your conscience, taking heart from your promise of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas'," it said.
"It is our fond hope that in this year of 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav', rising above partisan considerations, you will call for an end to the politics of hate that governments under your party's control are so assiduously practising,"

Over 100 former bureaucrats have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a hope that he will call for an end to what they termed as 'politics of hate' allegedly practised 'assiduously' by governments under BJP's control.
In an open letter, they said 'we are witnessing a frenzy of hate filled destruction in the country where at the sacrificial altar are not just Muslims and members of the other minority communities but the Constitution itself'.
Former Lt Governor of Delhi Najeeb Jung, former National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon, ex-foreign secretary Sujatha Singh, former home secretary GK Pillai and former prime minister Manmohan Singh's principal secretary T K A Nair are among the 108 signatories to the letter.
As former civil servants, it is not normally our want to express ourselves in such extreme terms, but the relentless pace at which the constitutional edifice created by our founding fathers is being destroyed compels us to speak out and express our anger and anguish, the letter said.
The escalation of hate violence against the minority communities, particularly Muslims, in the last few years and months across several states - Assam, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, all states in which the BJP is in power, barring Delhi (where the union government controls the police) - has acquired a frightening new dimension, it said.
The former bureaucrats said they believe that the threat is unprecedented and at stake is not just constitutional morality and conduct; it is that the unique syncretic social fabric, "which is our greatest civilizational inheritance and which our Constitution is so meticulously designed to conserve, is likely to be torn apart".
"Your silence, in the face of this enormous societal threat, is deafening," the letter said.
