Manipur Congress leader Okram Ibobi Singh demands an apology for a bus incident that led to protests, criticizes Governor's helicopter use, and calls for action amid ongoing ethnic violence.

Senior Manipur Congress leader Okram Ibobi Singh on Tuesday demanded that the "competent authority" who ordered the removal of the state's name from a government bus must apologise to the people of the state.
The Congress Legislative Party leader also termed as "embarrassing" the act of Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla taking a helicopter to reach Raj Bhavan from Imphal Airport on Monday.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event marking the 61st death anniversary of former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru at Congress Bhavan, he said, "It is very unlikely that without orders from a competent authority, personnel of the Mahar regiment of the Indian Army would ask the staffers to cover the name of Manipur on a government bus." "That competent authority may be the governor, the DGP or the security advisor... whoever that is should politely admit the mistake to the people before any further damage is done," he added.
Manipur's name has been in existence for centuries before its merger with India in 1949. The respected governor and other competent authorities must understand this, he asserted.
"Who gave the order?" the former three-times chief minister questioned.
"The uniformed personnel have come to the state to aid the civil administration in law and order issues. But if the personnel of the Mahar regiment acted on their own, why no action has been taken against them?" the Thoubal MLA asked.
Protests erupted in Manipur after security personnel asked staffers of a government bus carrying journalists to attend Shirui Lily Festival in Ukhrul on May 20 to cover the state's name on the vehicle.
"Yesterday, the governor took a helicopter ride for just a few kilometres to reach Raj Bhavan from Imphal Airport... this is embarrassing. The road does not pass through jungles but through areas inhabited by ordinary civilians," the Congress leader added.
As Bhalla reached Imphal from Delhi on Monday afternoon, he took a helicopter from the airport to reach Kangla Fort, around 300 metres from Raj Bhavan as protesters had formed a human chain along the 6-km route from the airport to the governor&rsquo;s house demanding an apology for the May 20 incident.
Ibobi Singh also called the ruling party MLAs as being irresponsible for not forming the government despite having sufficient numbers.
"Let them gather at the Raj Bhavan and tell the governor that they want to form the government," he asserted.
Also, till now no attempts have been made to reach a solution to the crisis in the state, he added.
More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and adjoining hills-based Kukis in Manipur since May, 2023.

Veteran Congress leader and former Union minister Girija Vyas, who suffered burn injuries on March 31 while performing aarti at her home here, has died at a hospital in Ahmedabad, her family said on Thursday. She was 79.
Vyas's brother, Gopal Sharma, said that she succumbed to burn injuries at the Ahmedabad hospital on Thursday evening.
The Congress leader was performing an aarti during which her dupatta caught fire from a burning lamp and suffered critical burn injuries. She was rushed to a private hospital in Udaipur, where she was referred to Ahmedabad.
Her funeral will be conducted in Udaipur on Friday, Sharma said.
Vyas was a prominent Congress leader who served as a minister in both the state and central governments. She was also the PCC chief.
She also served as the chairperson of the National Commission for Women.

A former member of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor's personal staff was detained at Delhi airport for smuggling gold. ANI news agency, quoting sources from Customs, reported on May 30 that he, along with another person, was arrested on May 29 for allegedly smuggling 500 grams of gold, worth over Rs 30 lakh.
It was earlier reported that one of the detained, Shiv Kumar Prasad, was the personal secretary of Tharoor. But the Congress leader later clarified on X that he used to work on a part-time basis, facilitating airport assistance
He further said that he is ready to extend support to authorities to take any necessary action required to investigate the matter.&nbsp;
Reacting to the report, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said the CPM and the Congress are an "alliance of gold smugglers".
"First CM Secy involved in Gold smuggling. Now Cong MP 'aide'/PA detained for Gold smuggling. CPM and Cong - both INDI alliance partners - alliance of gold smuggler," he wrote on X.
According to reports, Kumar arrived at Delhi Airport from Dubai. During the checking of his luggage, he was questioned by customs officials about the source of the gold and why he was bringing it to India.&nbsp;
However, he did not provide satisfactory responses, nor could he present the necessary documents. Further investigation into the matter is underway.

Vallabh Reddy attempted to get ride of the evidence by cleaning the blood stains at their home, cops said.&nbsp;

A local Congress leader in Telangana was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife in their house, police said on Saturday.
The accused, took his wife to a private hospital in the city on July 14 citing head injury and the doctors declared her brought dead.
Police during investigation and based on autopsy report arrested Vallabh Reddy on July 26 for allegedly murdering his 27-year-old wife following a scuffle, they said.
The couple got married around 15 months ago.
On July 14, there was a scuffle between the couple in their residence and on sudden provocation, Reddy allegedly assaulted his wife and her head banged against the wall and door frame, a police official at Narayanaguda Police Station said.
The woman fell down unconscious and she was immediately shifted to a hospital by her husband with head injury but the doctors declared her brought dead, the official said.
The hospital authorities informed the police about the incident and the police initially registered a case under Section 174 of CrPC (suspicious death).
The woman's father also lodged a complaint with the police.
The post-mortem report revealed that the woman had also suffered internal injuries in the abdomen, the official said adding "based on that we altered the Sections in the case to IPC Sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence)".
During the investigation, it was also found that the accused had cleaned the blood from the floor and other places after allegedly murdering his wife, police added.
