A large storm system spouting heavy winds and possible tornados in Texas, Louisiana and Kentucky damaged homes and buildings, downed trees, left thousands without power and was blamed for the deaths of two people on Friday as it marched eastward, threatening heavy snow in the Midwest and Northeast.
After spawning likely tornadoes overnight in Texas and Louisiana that damaged a university campus, the storms threatened the Tennessee and Ohio valleys with high winds and more tornadoes as they moved toward New England, officials said.
A 70-year-old man sitting in his truck as strong winds blew through Talledega County, Alabama, was killed Friday when a tree fell onto the vehicle. Coroner Shaddix Murphy said it happened about 11.30 am as a storm system came through the area.
&ldquo;The death appears to be weather-related, with the winds we were having at the time,&rdquo; Murphy said. The victim was identified as Allen Cooley of Talledega.

In west central Mississippi, a person was killed inside a vehicle Friday after a tree, toppled by strong winds, struck the car. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency has not identified the person but said in a news release that their death is being considered as weather-related.
Parts of southwestern Michigan and northern Indiana saw rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow and strong wind gusts on Friday, according to Indiana Michigan Power.
The National Weather Service issued numerous tornado warnings in parts of Indiana, Alabama and western Georgia.
In Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear warned of possible tornadoes and 55- to 65-mph (88- to 104-kph) wind gusts after rain moves through the state. Several school districts closed in anticipation.
&ldquo;The wind will really kick in after the storm moves through,&rdquo; Beshear said Friday. &ldquo;I don't want people to have confidence that it's going to be safe.&rdquo; Power provider Ameren Illinois reported more than 18,000 customers without service in the central part of the state after storms packing wind gusts as high as 69 mph (111 kph) swept through the region.
In New England, the storm was expected to bring as much as 18 inches (45 centimeters) of snow and winds gusts as high as 40 mph (64 kph) to parts of New Hampshire and Maine.
The weather service issued a winter storm warning from 10 pm Friday until 7 p.m. Saturday and said that a mix of snow, sleet and rain was expected in southern New England and that minor coastal flooding was possible in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
The storms slammed California earlier in the week with as much as 10 feet (3 meters) of snow, with some residents in mountains east of Los Angeles looking at being stuck in their homes for at least another week.
The weather service surveyed damage Friday near Pickton, about 80 miles (130 kilometres) east of Dallas, where a confirmed tornado struck, according to meteorologist Daniel Huckaby.

North of Dallas, winds brought down trees, ripped the roof off a grocery store in Little Elm and overturned four 18-wheelers along US Highway 75. Minor injuries were reported, police said.
Buildings at Louisiana State University-Shreveport were damaged, and trees were toppled, said spokesperson Erin Smith, but the campus was reopening Friday after being shut down overnight.

There has been no significant progress in the standards of children&rsquo;s lives and rights across the world over the last decade according to the latest report by KidsRights Index. One billion children are at 'extremely high risk' from global climate impacts

Nearly one billion children are at "extremely high risk" due to climate change harms, a rights group warned on Wednesday, adding that youths' living standards failed to improve in the last decade.
The KidsRights index, based on figures supplied by UN agencies, also said more than one-third of the world's children, some 820 million, were currently exposed to heatwaves.
Water scarcity affected 920 million children worldwide, while diseases such as malaria and dengue affected some 600 million children, or one in every four, Dutch NGO KidsRights said.
The KidsRights Index is the first and only ranking that measures how children's rights are respected annually, ranking Iceland, Sweden, and Finland as the best for children's rights and Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and Chad as the worst, out of 185 countries.
Of the top three nations, only Sweden's ranking changed from the previous year, moving to second from fourth place.
Marc Dullaert, founder and chairman of KidsRights, described this year's report as "alarming for our current and future generations of children."
"A rapidly changing climate is now threatening their futures and their basic rights," he said.
"There has been no significant progress in the standards of children's lives over the past decade and on top of that their livelihoods have been severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic," Dullaert added.
The Covid-19 pandemic had a severe impact on children, who were unable to get food or medicine due to disruptions and the closure of clinics, leading to some 286,000 under the age of five years dying as a result, KidsRights said.
For the first time in two decades, the number of child labourers has risen to 160 million, representing an increase of 8.4 million over the last four years, said the KidsRights Index, which is compiled together with Rotterdam's Erasmus University.
KidsRights highlighted Angola and Bangladesh, saying the two countries significantly improved their scores in regards to children's rights.
Angola has more than halved its under-five child mortality, while Bangladesh has reduced the number of underweight children under five years by almost half.
But the report also slapped Montenegro for low vaccination numbers, ranked 49 on the index.
The survey uses UN data to measure how countries measure up to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Awaiting peer-reviewal&nbsp;with&nbsp;<a href="https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3918955">Lancet Planetary Health</a>, the report shows how the ever-increasing climate crisis&nbsp;is damning the psychological health of young people.&nbsp;Ferocious floods,&nbsp;rising temperatures,&nbsp;cyclones,&nbsp;wildfires, landslides&nbsp;and many more disasters&nbsp;have been attributed to&nbsp;climate change and&nbsp;it is no surprise that more than 75 per cent of all those surveyed say that the &lsquo;future is frightening.&rsquo;&nbsp;

Many, including 41 per cent in India, are also&nbsp;hesitant&nbsp;to consider having children of their own. Their feelings&nbsp;of climate anxiety&nbsp;range from&nbsp;sad, afraid and anxious to&nbsp;fear, anger, despair, grief, shame, and a little bit of hope.&nbsp;
<h3>Blame governments for inadequate response&nbsp;&nbsp;</h3>
Around&nbsp;65 per cent of young people also believe that the government&nbsp;response to climate issues has failed young&nbsp;people, including 71 per cent of Indians.&nbsp;Children&nbsp;in Brazil, where deforestation of the Amazon rainforest has soared under President Bolsonaro,&nbsp;were&nbsp;especially enraged at 78 per cent, found the survey.

Why Do We Need Green Politics In India?

India is constantly struggling with environmental issues such as floods and droughts every year. The water scarcity in Chennai and the air pollution in Delhi are the prime indicators of this problem. And yet we do not have a strong political representation of these issues in the elections in our country. Therefore, there is an urgent need for green politics in India.
 But what is green politics and why does India need it?
Let&rsquo;s try and find out.
The values behind green politics in India are not exactly new; in fact, they have been found in mainstream politics since the freedom movement. Mahatma Gandhi, for instance, strongly emphasized on social justice, grass-roots democracy, non-violence and respect for diversity in his vision for India. And all of these values have been the four basic pillars of green politics across the world.
Green politics first emerged on the political front in Australia when workers, under the leadership of a trade leader and environmental activist named Jack Mundey, launched the Green Ban movement. In May, 1973, the workers refused to work on projects that damaged the country&rsquo;s ecological balance.
This ideology was soon replicated in West Germany where the political party called &ldquo;The Greens&rdquo; was inaugurated in 1980. The Greens became a powerful force in the German Politics forming a coalition government with the Social Democratic Party in 1998. By 2016, the Greens have joined 11 out of 16 German state governments in a variety of coalitions.
Since then, Green parties have made huge strides in the western world, The Italian Federation of the Greens, the French Greens, the German Alliance '90/The Greens were part of government during the late 1990s. India, however, has not really seen a defined prominent green party till now. For a country which saw movements such as Chipko Andolan and Narmada Bachao Movement, it is disheartening to see this gap. With an ever expanding population, the burden on the environment in increasing day by day and the scales are tipping in the wrong direction. If there was ever a time for Green Parties to flourish, it is now.
That&rsquo;s not to say that Green parties don&rsquo;t exist in our country. Some parties with a specific focus on conserving the environment have come up in the recent past. The first of these was the Indian National Green Party, which was launched on 7 January 1999. Soon, other political parties followed; Green Party of India, led by Subhas Dutta, was launched in January 2010; the India People&rsquo;s Green Party started in Jaipur in 2011; the India Greens Party, was launched in November 2018.
But unfortunately, the real impact that these parties can have is limited; they are simply not big enough for them to have any sort of solid reach, popularity or political impact. This power still lies with either the prominent state parties, or the national honchos like the BJP and Congress.
When it comes to elections, although environmental issues do find a place in the manifestos of most major political parties, the follow-through is hardly visible.
For instance, the BJP made huge promises to clean the river Ganga in its manifesto when it came to power, but that hasn&rsquo;t translated into any ground reality under its governance. The National Ganga Council headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi hasn&rsquo;t met even once since its formation in 2016. According to a study by Sankat Mochan Foundation, an NGO in Varanasi, which has been monitoring the water quality of Ganga since 1986, the water quality has actually worsened in the last three years.
On the other hand, last year, only four out of the 29 members were present at a Parliamentary Standing Committee of Urban Development in Delhi-NCR to discuss the rising air pollution. Even big names such as Gautam Gambhir representing East Delhi in the parliament were absent. He was seen in a picture shared online eating Jalebis in Indore while the meeting got cancelled.
The most effective way of engaging with &lsquo;green politics&rsquo; is to force these parties to look at environmental issues as an active sector to work on and not something that they just mention in their manifesto.&nbsp;
This pressure on the parties can come only from one source; we, the voters. When the voters decide to hold their representatives accountable to environmental issues, even the ones that are the most localised, one can be sure to witness a significant change in our attitudes. The individual needs to become responsible in this regard to make the idea of &ldquo;green&rdquo; an indispensable part of their life and their politics.
The other way to address this is for politicians to realize the kind of limelight they can bring to an issue by making it a central part of their election plank. Like the AAP uses education as a central poll issue, making environmental concerns a matter of elections could also bring about a change. Unfortunately, as we have seen, this is far from happening any time soon.
With the rising concerns of climate change and the danger it poses to the other living and nonliving bodies that we share the planet with, it becomes our responsibility, as the &ldquo;most intelligent species&rdquo;, to protect and sustain this blue-green ball of dust we call our home. Making the environment an electoral issue is an important first step in this direction.
