After four years of fractious talks, nearly 200 countries, including India, approved a historic Paris-style deal on Monday to protect and reverse dangerous loss to global biodiversity following an intense final session of negotiations at the UN COP15 summit here in Canada.
Amid loud applause from assembled delegates, the president of the COP15 biodiversity summit, which started on December 7, Chinese Environment Minister Huang Runqiu, declared the Kunming-Montreal Agreement adopted.
The chair maneuvered to ignore Congo&rsquo;s last-minute move which had refused to back the text and demanded greater funding for developing countries as part of the accord.
The Chinese-brokered deal is aimed at saving the lands, oceans and species from pollution, degradation and climate change.
Monitored wildlife populations &ndash; mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish &ndash; have seen a devastating 69 per cent drop on average since 1970, according to the Living Planet Report (LPR) 2022 of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
One of the most contentious issues in the negotiations was the finance package to support conservation efforts globally, and particularly in developing countries.
The deal commits to progressively increase the level of financial resources from all sources by 2030, mobilising at least USD 200 billion per year. This represents roughly a doubling from a 2020 baseline.

A major achievement is also the commitment to USD 20 billion in international finance flows by 2025 and USD 30 billion by 2030.
The 23 targets in the accord also include cutting environmentally &ldquo;destructive" farming subsidies, reducing the risk from pesticides, and tackling invasive species.

India on Sunday called as historic the UN climate summit in Egypt for securing an agreement on establishing a fund to address loss and damage due to climate change-induced disasters, saying "the world has waited far too long for this".&nbsp;
Making an intervention in the closing plenary of COP27, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav also said the world should not burden farmers with mitigation (reducing emissions of greenhouse gases) responsibilities.
"You are presiding over a historic COP where agreement has been secured for loss and damage funding arrangements including setting up a loss and damage fund. The world has waited far too long for this. We congratulate you on your untiring efforts to evolve consensus," Yadav said addressing the Egyptian presidency.
A fund to address loss and damage, which refers to destruction caused by climate change-induced disasters, was a long-pending demand of poor and developing countries, including India, and the key element at this year's UN climate summit.The success of the talks hinged on progress on this track.
Developed nations, particularly the US, had been opposing this new fund over fears that it would hold them legally liable for massive damages caused by climate change.

On the establishment of a four-year work program on climate action in agriculture and food security at COP27, Yadav said agriculture, the mainstay of livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers, will be hard hit from climate change. &nbsp;"So, we should not burden them with mitigation responsibilities. Indeed, India has kept mitigation in agriculture out of its NDCs (national plans to achieve Paris Agreement goals of limiting warming to 1.5 degree Celsius)," he said.
Opposing the efforts to extend the scope of mitigation to agriculture at COP27, India had Thursday said that rich nations do not want to reduce emissions by changing their lifestyles and are "searching for cheaper solutions abroad".
Agriculture accounts for around 17 percent of India's GDP and is the primary source of livelihood for about 58 per cent of its population.

As per India’s bureau of crime statistics, the NCRB,

70% Environmental crimes are linked to Cigarette and Other Tobacco products 

That’s over 29,500 cases! 

So what does this mean? 

Well, no one really knows 

It’s the first time crimes under the Tobacco law have been added to the category of environmental offences 

Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 controls 
--smoking in a public place, 
--illegal sale of tobacco and 
--tobacco advertising, among other things

Of the over 29,500 cases under the law,  70 % were from Tamil Nadu 

More than 25,000 - were arrested under the tobacco law,

Out of which 230 were women
