The Centre has sanctioned a contingent of 296 armed CISF personnel for providing a counter-terrorist security cover to the Bhakra dam amid the continuing standoff between Punjab and Haryana over sharing of water from the dam, official sources said Wednesday.
They said the Union home ministry has directed that the force be deployed at the dam, located in Nangal along the Punjab-Himachal Pradesh border, in view of threat perception reports prepared for it by central intelligence and security agencies.
A total of 296 Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel will be deployed at the Bhakra dam for securing it against any sabotage or terrorist attack-like threat, the sources said.
The force will take position as soon as logistics and accommodation issues are addressed for the troops there, they said.
The Centre's decision comes amid a dispute between Punjab and Haryana over sharing of its water.
Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan on May 2 chaired a high-level meeting which advised to carry out the Bhakra Beas Management Board's (BBMB) decision to release 4,500 cusecs of extra water from Bhakra dam to Haryana for some days to meet the state's urgent water requirements.
The two states are at loggerheads over the distribution of water with the AAP government in Punjab refusing to share water from the Bhakra dam, saying the neighbouring state has already utilised its share of water.
Bhakra dam is Asia's second tallest at 225.55 m after the 261m Tehri dam.
In terms of storage of water, it is the second largest reservoir in India, the first being Indira Sagar dam in Madhya Pradesh.

According to a <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/explained-adani-group-to-acquire-stake-in-ndtv-1661298069635">NDTV</a> report, the passenger identified as Misam Raza was flying to Dubai from Delhi on a <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/case-against-social-media-influencer-for-smoking-inside-spicejet-plane-1660657225967">SpiceJet</a> flight.&nbsp;
The airport authorities noticed Raza&rsquo;s suspicious activity based on behaviour detection at Terminal-3 of the airport.
The passenger was then put under thorough check along with his luggage. At the X-ray baggage inspection system, buttons in bulk were detected. Although he was allowed to complete his check in formalities, the officials maintained a close watch on him.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, on thorough checking of his luggage, the officials found Saudi Riyals concealed in lehenga buttons. The currency notes were made into small bundles and packed inside oversize buttons.&nbsp;

Air India took note of the video, and sought details of the incident from Bhimani. Subsequent correspondence on Twitter appeared to suggest that the airline promised to refund the ticket amount.
Later, as the video gained traction and outrage against Air India grew, the airline issued a clarification. Air India claimed that a doctor and a CISF personnel had been called immediately to help the passenger, but she had started feeling better by then. The airline said that the woman declined medical and wheelchair assistance.
Regarding the denial to board, Air India said that it has to adhere to rules, and couldn't delay the flight as all the other passengers had boarded on time. Air India claimed its staff had repeatedly called the names of the three people in question before the gate closed.
India's aviation regulator DGCA said that it had sought a report from the airline.

 One security force personnel was killed and four more suffered injuries in a gunfight with terrorists in a locality near an Army camp on the outskirts of Jammu early Friday, officials said.
The encounter in Sunjwan took place amid heightened security arrangements in Jammu and Kashmir, two days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Samba district.
Additional Director General of Police of Jammu Mukesh Singh said the encounter started when the police's Special Operations Group and the CRPF launched a joint search operation in the area.
He said one security force personnel was killed and three more suffered injuries in the gunfight. "The encounter is going on," he said.
A search operation was launched on a specific information about the presence of at least two heavily-armed terrorists, likely belonging to the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) outfit, in a vicinity adjacent to the sprawling Sunjwan military station to carry out a major strike in the city, the officials said.
They said the terrorists hurled a grenade and opened fire on the search parties who retaliated, triggering a gunfight.
Reinforcements have been rushed to the area and an operation is underway to neutralise the terrorists, the officials said.
On February 10 in 2018, three JeM terrorists stormed the Sunjwan Army camp and in the subsequent gunfight, seven persons, including six soldiers, were killed. All the three terrorists were also gunned down.
On National Panchayati Raj Day on April 24, the prime minister is scheduled to visit Pali village, 17 km from here, to address a gathering.
This will be Modi's first visit to Jammu and Kashmir other than borders since the abrogation of the special status of erstwhile state and its bifurcation in August 2019.
He had celebrated Diwali with Army jawans on October 27, 2019 in Rajouri and on November 3, 2021 in Nowshera sector in Jammu division.

Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officials said a bus carrying 15 personnel for their morning shift came under attack at 4.25 am near the Chaddha camp in Sunjwan area.
The police however say that the gunfight broke out after a joint cordon and search operation was launched in the area based on intelligence inputs.

The encounter in Sunjwan took place amid heightened security arrangements in Jammu and Kashmir, two days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Samba district.
Authorities suspended classes in all private and government schools in the vicinity and adjoining areas as a precautionary measure besides suspending the mobile internet services, the officials said.
Meanwhile, 4 militants were gunned down&nbsp;in an encounter with security forces in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, police said.&nbsp;
Top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander Yousuf Kantroo, one of the longest-surviving militants in the Valley, was gunned down in the operation that began on Thursday morning.&nbsp;

The encounter in Sunjwan took place amid heightened security arrangements in Jammu and Kashmir, two days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Samba district.

Two terrorists and a security personnel were killed after terrorists targeted a CISF bus leading to a gunfight near an Army camp on the outskirts of Jammu early Friday, officials said.
Nine security personnel were also injured in the gunfight, they said.

An octogenarian woman with disability was was allegedly made to strip by security officials at Guwahati airport on Thursday.The 80-year-old woman was travelling with her granddaughter from Nagaland to New Delhi when the Central Industries Security Force personnel reportedly stopped her for frisking.Her daughter, Dolly Kikon, who is a noted anthropologist based in Australia, said on Twitter that the CISF personnel insisted that she pull down her undergarment to show proof of her titanium hip implant.
As Dolly Kikon’s string of tweets on the incident sparked outrage, Union civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia responded to her, promising to look into the incident.
The CISF later tweeted that the security and dignity of passengers had to go hand in hand. The force, which is entrusted with the security of major airports, also announced that the official concerned has been suspended.

Thankfully, no train was seen arriving or departing when the incident occurred on February 4. The passenger has reportedly been identified as Shailendra Mehta, while the CISF personnel who saved him was Rohtas. "The organisation is an important facility when it comes to ensuring medical and health security of the country and it obviously faces a terror threat from various inimical elements. The CISF, hence, has been tasked to secure the Bharat Biotech facility in Hyderabad," an official told PTI.

CISF Jawan’s Body Fished Out

SDRF teams recovered the body of Debashish Das, a resident of Tetelisora, Kampur. Debashish had gone missing in the Nishari river. Additional security forces has been called in fearing violence in the area. Debashish was a CISF jawan. The search and rescue team spent the whole day yesterday to trace Debashsish. A pall of gloom has descended on Tetelisora. Locals have sought an inquiry into the death of Debashish.
