Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has criticised Ben Stokes for his dismissive remarks on injury substitutions, saying the England captain should "think before speaking", as "karma" came back to haunt them when they were left a batter short following Chris Woakes' shoulder niggle in the fifth Test.
India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant had retired hurt on the first day of the drawn fourth Test at Manchester but returned to bat the next day despite scans confirming a fracture in his right foot.
India coach Gautam Gambhir had subsequently called for the introduction of injury replacements in Test cricket, a suggestion that Stokes dismissed, terming it &ldquo;absolutely ridiculous.&rdquo;
However, in the fifth Test at The Oval, England faced a similar situation when Woakes suffered a fractured shoulder but still came out to bat on the final day with England nine wickets down and needing fewer than 20 runs to win.
"I want to talk about another imperfection in this series. There's a Tamil saying that loosely translates to 'Your karma will affect you almost instantly'. What you sow is what you reap,&rdquo; Ashwin said on his YouTube channel &lsquo;Ash Ki Baat&rsquo;.
"After the last Test, there were questions asked about the injury to Pant. Gautam Gambhir said that such injuries need a substitution. And when Stokes was asked about this response, he simply brushed it away, calling it a joke. I am a big fan of Stokes' cricketing abilities and his attitude. But he can think and then reply." Highlighting Woakes&rsquo; determination to continue batting despite his injury, Ashwin added, "He was ready to give his life to win the game for his team, and almost did it too. He had the game awareness to run and give the strike to Atkinson. Hats off to Chris Woakes. Remarkable attitude, and a remarkable way to step out for your team, and put your body on the line." Ashwin also referenced former England captain Michael Vaughan&rsquo;s comments on the need for cricket&rsquo;s rules to evolve.
"Michael Vaughan said this is one area where the game can evolve. Substitutions should be allowed. All I'm saying is: show a little empathy for the other team. Stokes should have considered what it would be like if a player of Rishabh Pant's calibre was in his team and got injured.
"Wouldn't you want a substitution? Wouldn't that be fair? You are free to share your opinion &mdash; but using words like &lsquo;joke&rsquo; and &lsquo;ridiculous&rsquo; isn&rsquo;t respectful. Think before you speak. Karma hits instantly," he added.

The all-rounder had to leave the field after landing awkwardly on his left shoulder while saving a ball hit by Karun Nair at long-off late during the opening day of the match on Thursday.
Woakes looked in visible pain as he walked off the field with his left arm wrapped in his sweater.
"England seamer Chris Woakes will continue to be monitored throughout the remainder of the Rothesay Fifth Test at The Kia Oval, following a left shoulder injury sustained on day one of the match against India," the England and Wales Cricket Board said in a statement.
"At this stage, the injury has ruled him out of any further participation in the Test. A further assessment will be conducted at the conclusion of the series." Earlier on Thursday, Woakes teammate Gus Atkinson said Woakes' injury didn't look good.
"I don't know too much about it, but it doesn't look great," Atkinson said after India reached 204 for 6 at stumps on the rain-affected day.
"It's a big shame, last game of the series, and when anyone gets injured, it's a shame. I'm hoping it's not too bad, and whatever it is, he'll get full support from everyone." Woakes bowled 14 overs on the opening day, picking up the crucial wicket of KL Rahul and conceded 46 runs.
Woakes' injury has added to the woes of England, who are missing several key players, including captain Ben Stokes.
Atkinson picked up two wickets from his 19 overs on the opening day, and seemed confident to take up the responsibility in Woakes' absence.
"Definitely, I feel fresh, I feel good," Atkinson said.
"I know I've only got this one game to play so I can push the limits a bit," he added.

Seasoned England pacer Chris Woakes admitted to feeling "frustrated" after a couple of tight umpiring calls went in India's favour against his bowling on the opening day of the second Test here.
Woakes, with his immaculate line and length, turned out to be the standout bowler for the hosts as he ended day one with figures of 2 for 59 from 18 overs.
However, two key reviews off his bowling -- both ruled umpire's call -- did not go England's way.
"It was a pretty frustrating morning, really," Woakes told reporters after stumps on the opening day on Wednesday.
"Obviously emotions run high when you are desperate to do well for the team, do well for yourself and it would have been nice... had those decisions gone our way, the day looks completely different, but that is Test cricket and we move on," he added.
Both decisions involved India's top order.
The first came in the seventh over, with India at 14 without loss, when Yashasvi Jaiswal was struck on the pads. The second was in the 11th over, with India 21 for one, and Karun Nair survived a similar review.
On both occasions, DRS showed the delivery clipping the stumps, but not enough to overturn the not out on-field call by Bangladeshi umpire Sharfuddoula.
"We could have easily had them 30 for 3. A couple of decisions go our way early doors and we&rsquo;re looking at a completely different day ahead -- at 30 for three you're into the middle order when the ball is still hard and new.
"They're decisions which can obviously go your way or not. That&rsquo;s the game we play." Jaiswal went on to score 87, and Nair made 31, before India captain Shubman Gill anchored the innings with a composed, unbeaten 114 to take his side to 310 for five at stumps.
While Woakes acknowledged that DRS has generally improved decision-making in cricket, he called for one particular tweak.
"I need to be careful: I've had some (decisions) go my way over the years. In general, DRS has been good for the game. A lot more right decisions are given (than before).
"The only thing I would like to come in is that if a batsman decides to leave the ball and it's still hitting the stumps, I think that should be out - regardless if it's clipping or not," he added.
Woakes' first wicket came in between the the two referrals when he got opener KL Rahul and the pacer celebrated by looking up at the sky, remembering his late father, who died last year.
"He's always on my mind, that's for sure. There are moments where you certainly think about him. He loved his cricket; he would've loved this week," he said.
