After spending more than three weeks surveying waters outside India's exclusive economic zones of India, China's Xiang Yang Hong 03 arrived in the Maldives&nbsp;

A Chinese research vessel arrived in the Maldives on Thursday, Reuters reported quoting global ship-tracking data.
The data further showed that before its arrival, the Xiang Yang Hong 03 spent more than three weeks surveying waters just outside the exclusive economic zones of India, the Maldives, and Sri Lanka.
The Chinese foreign ministry has reiterated that the civilian ship was exclusively" for peaceful purposes to benefit scientific understanding.
India has been expressing its concerns over the presence of China's research vessels in the Indian Ocean.&nbsp;
The Maldives has said the vessel would do no research in its waters, stopping only for personnel rotation and replenishment of supplies.
The visit comes after a US think tank in January said that the Chinese Navy may "leverage the insights gained from these missions" for the deployment of naval forces, a claim Beijing termed it an image-smearing "China threat" narrative.
According to Reuters, Hong 03 has visited the Indian Ocean multiple times.
It sailed through the Sunda Strait in Indonesia in 2021, alarming Indonesian authorities, who said it had switched off its tracking system three times.
Chinese research vessels have also stopped in nearby Sri Lanka. In 2022, Yuan Wang 5, a military vessel capable of tracking rocket and missile launches, arrived in Colombo, alarming India.
The last time a Chinese research vessel docked in Sri Lanka was in October 2023, reviving India's concerns. But in January, the island nation imposed a year-long moratorium on foreign research ships, effectively denying China a port of call.

The Maldivian government on January 23 confirmed that the Chinese research vessel was heading towards the capital Male city. In a press statement, the foreign affairs ministry said that a diplomatic request for a port call was made by the Chinese government.
It also junked media reports that the Xiang Yang Hong 3 ship would be conducting a survey of the Indian Ocean.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would like to inform that a diplomatic request was made by the Government of China to the Government of Maldives, for the necessary clearances to make a port call, for rotation of personnel and replenishment. The vessel would not be conducting any research while in the Maldivian waters," it said in a statement.&nbsp;
"The Maldives has always been a welcoming destination for vessels of friendly countries, and continues to host both civilian and military vessels making port calls for peaceful purposes..."
"Such port calls not only enhance bilateral ties between the Maldives and partner countries, but also demonstrate the centuries-old tradition of welcoming vessels from friendly countries..."
India has been wary of the Chinese research vessel traversing through the Indian Ocean over its potential spying capabilities. Last month, Sri Lanka announced a year-long moratorium on foreign research vessels visiting the Lankan waters after India raised concerns.&nbsp;
Relations between traditional friends New Delhi and Male have soured since President Muizzu took office in November riding an &lsquo;India Out&rsquo; campaign.
Both New Delhi and Beijing vie for influence on the tiny Indian Ocean nation but the new government in Male is pivoting towards China and has asked India to withdraw its nearly 80 troops stationed there.
The Chinese vessel is en-route to Male, open source intelligence researcher Damien Symon wrote on social media platform X, saying Xiang Yang Hong 03 &ldquo;is entering the Indian Ocean Region, displaying its destination as Male, the vessel is expected to run an ocean survey operation in the Indian Ocean Region raising concern in #India&rdquo;, reports Reuters news agency.
An Indian military official confirmed Symon&rsquo;s finding and said they are monitoring its movement.
The Maldivian president&rsquo;s office, India&rsquo;s foreign ministry and China&rsquo;s defence ministry did not respond to requests for comment.
New Delhi has in the past flagged similar visits by other Chinese research vessels with its other littoral neighbour Sri Lanka, which has denied permission for such vessels to dock on its ports since 2022.
In 2019, India expelled another Chinese research vessel from its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) after it entered without permission.
A senior Indian security official told Reuters news agency that China&rsquo;s research vessels are &ldquo;dual use&rdquo; which means the information gathered by them can be used for both civilian and military purposes, including the deployment of submarines.
Both the Indian military and security officials spoke on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to speak publicly on the subject.
Earlier this month, state-affiliated Chinese media warned against calling its maritime research in the Indian Ocean Region a threat, after an American think tank said China&rsquo;s navy could &ldquo;leverage the insights gained from these missions&rdquo; for deployment of naval forces.

China's embassy has sought an urgent meeting with senior Sri Lankan authorities after Colombo sought a deferment of the planned docking of a high-tech Chinese research vessel at the strategic Hambantota port over which India raised concerns.

The Chinese vessel's docking at the strategically important Hambantota port, developed largely with Chinese loans, was approved on July 12 by former Sri Lankan president Gotabaya Rajapaksa before he fled the country.

Chinese embassy has sought an urgent meeting with senior Sri Lankan authorities after Colombo sought a deferment of the planned docking of a high-tech Chinese research vessel at the strategic Hambantota port over which India raised concerns.
The Chinese space and satellite tracking research vessel 'Yuan Wang 5' was scheduled to dock at the Hambantota Port from August 11 to 17, weeks after Sri Lanka witnessed a major political turmoil following massive mass protests over the country's worst economic crisis in decades.
A 'third-person' note from Sri Lanka's Foreign Ministry to the Chinese embassy in Colombo dated August 5 says &ldquo;the ministry wishes to request that the arrival of the vessel Yuan Wang 5 in Hambantota to be deferred until further consultations are made on the matter.&rdquo; The Chinese embassy in Colombo sought an urgent meeting with the higher Sri Lankan authorities to discuss the issue after receiving the note from the Foreign Ministry seeking a delay in the visit, sources here said.
Some Sri Lankan news portals also reported that Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe held a closed-door meeting with China's Ambassador Qi Zhenhong after Colombo sought a deferment of the planned docking.
But the President's Office denied the media reports over the meeting.
On July 12, amidst the political turmoil in Sri Lanka, the then government approved the Chinese vessel's docking at the Hambantota port.
The Chinese vessel was expected to dock at the Sri Lankan port for "refuelling and &lsquo;replenishment&rsquo; and will conduct satellite control and research tracking in the northwestern part of the Indian Ocean region through August and September.
The southern deep-sea port of Hambantota is considered strategically important for its location. The port, located in the hometown of the Rajapaksa family, has been developed largely with Chinese loans.
According to media reports here, India has informed Sri Lanka that the docking of the high-tech Chinese research vessel could pose a threat to its national security.
Sri Lanka received strong messages of protests from India as the ship was said to have the capability to track satellites and intercontinental ballistic missiles, the report said.
India has said it carefully monitors any development having a bearing on its security and economic interests.
"We are aware of reports of a proposed visit by this vessel to Hambantota in August," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in New Delhi when asked about the reports of a proposed visit by a Chinese vessel.
"The government carefully monitors any development having a bearing on India's security and economic interests and takes all necessary measures to safeguard them," he said last month.
New Delhi is concerned about the possibility of the ship&rsquo;s tracking systems attempting to snoop on Indian installations while being on its way to the Sri Lankan port.
India has traditionally taken a stern view of Chinese military vessels in the Indian Ocean and has protested such visits with Sri Lanka in the past.
The ties between India and Sri Lanka had come under strain after Colombo gave permission to a Chinese nuclear-powered submarine to dock in one of its ports in 2014.
China is the main creditor of Sri Lanka with investment in infrastructure. Debt restructuring of Chinese loans would be key to the island&rsquo;s success in the ongoing talks with the International Monetary Fund for a bailout.
India on the other hand has been Sri Lanka&rsquo;s lifeline in the ongoing economic crisis.
India has been at the forefront of extending economic assistance of nearly USD 4 billion to Sri Lanka during the year as the island nation is grappling with the worst economic crisis since independence in 1948.
As the new Sri Lankan president looks at pulling the country out of its economic crisis, India has said that it will continue to assist the island nation and support its people in their quest for stability and prosperity.
Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena last week said Sri Lanka was looking forward to settle the issue of the vessel's visit with an "approach of friendship".
India&rsquo;s concerns have been focused on Hambantota port in particular. In 2017, Colombo leased the southern port to China Merchant Port Holdings for 99 years, after Sri Lanka was unable to keep its loan repayment commitments, fanning fears over the potential use of the port for military purposes.&nbsp;
