Philippine military chief General Romeo Brawner said the "outnumbered" Filipino crew had been unarmed and had fought with their "bare hands".

Chinese coast guard sailors brandished knives, an axe and other weapons in a clash with Philippine naval vessels near a strategic reef in the South China Sea, dramatic new footage released by Manila showed.
The clash took place Monday as Philippine forces attempted to resupply marines stationed on a derelict warship that was deliberately grounded atop the disputed Second Thomas Shoal in 1999 to assert Manila's territorial claims.
It was the latest in a series of escalating confrontations between Chinese and Philippine ships in recent months as Beijing steps up efforts to push its claims to the disputed area.

A Filipino sailor lost a thumb in the clash, in which the Chinese coast guard confiscated or destroyed Philippine equipment including guns, according to the Philippine military.
Fresh footage released by the Philippine military late Wednesday showed small boats crewed by Chinese sailors shouting, waving knives and using sticks to hit an inflatable boat as a siren blares.
A voice speaking Tagalog can be heard in one clip saying someone had "lost a finger".
Manila's footage of the clash stands in stark contrast to photos released by Beijing's state media on Wednesday, which did not show Chinese forces wielding weapons.
'Violent confrontation' &nbsp;
Asked about the videos on Thursday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said Manila's comments on the clash were "totally bogus accusations that confuse black with white".
He blamed the Philippines for the confrontation, saying they had "escalated tensions" and accused them of ramming Chinese boats.
Lin said the Philippine boats had been trying "to sneak in building materials, but also tried to smuggle in military equipment".
Beijing has insisted that its coast guard behaved in a "professional and restrained" way and claimed "no direct measures" were taken against Filipino personnel.
But in a clip shared by Manila, a Chinese sailor standing on the deck of one of the boats can clearly be seen waving an axe.
Another shows a Chinese coast guard sailor striking the inflatable boat with a stick. A second man can also be seen stabbing the boat with a knife.
The Philippines military said an axe-wielding sailor had "threatened to injure" a Filipino soldier, while others were "explicitly threatening to harm" Filipino troops.
"The (Chinese coast guard) personnel then began hurling rocks and other objects at our personnel," Manila said.
"They also slashed the (inflatable boats), rendering them inoperable."
The Filipino sailors, wearing brown camouflage with helmets and vests, are not carrying weapons in the clips.
"Amidst this violent confrontation, the CCG (Chinese coast guard) also deployed tear gas, intensifying the chaos and confusion, while continuously blaring sirens to further disrupt communication," the caption said.
Manila has accused Beijing of an "act of piracy" against its forces.
It has also demanded the return of items "looted" by the Chinese side, including seven guns, and reparations for damaged equipment.
&nbsp;'Perilous' situation
Analysts say Beijing is escalating confrontations with the Philippines in a bid to push it out of the South China Sea.
Jay Batongbacal, director for the Institute for Maritime Affairs and Law of the Sea in Manila, told AFP that China's forces could be poised to seize the grounded Philippine warship, the Sierra Madre.
"The deployment of their forces at present around the Sierra Madre and then the many reefs around the Kalayaan island group is indicative that they're ready to do it," he said, referring to Manila-claimed areas in the Spratly Islands.
The United States has said that "an armed attack" against Philippine public vessels, aircraft, armed forces and coastguard anywhere in the South China Sea would require it to come to Manila's defence as a treaty ally.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken "emphasized that (China's) actions undermine regional peace and stability" in a call with his Philippine counterpart Enrique A. Manalo on Wednesday, according to the State Department.
Blinken said they also "underscored the United States' ironclad commitments to the Philippines under our Mutual Defense Treaty".
Another analyst said the clashes "brought us perilously close" to a point where the United States would be required to intervene militarily.
"The Philippines will likely need to continue resupply missions to the Sierra Madre, one way or another," said Duan Dang, a Vietnam-based maritime security analyst.
"Backing down and accepting Beijing's terms regarding these operations would mean relinquishing sovereign rights within its Exclusive Economic Zone," he said.

A meal at a hotpot restaurant turned into a nightmare for a Chinese woman as she received a $60,000 bill which is approximately ₹50 lakh. She got an astronomical bill for the food that she did not order.&nbsp;
The woman shared a picture of her meal on her social media, but what turned the tables was that the QR code on the table was included in that picture. This was not some regular QR code as through this, people can scan and order their food.&nbsp;
However, as the picture went online, several social media users scanned it and placed several orders on the woman's table. Even though the woman tried to explain to the restaurant what happened, the restaurant was unable to cancel the orders and she ended up getting the hefty bill.&nbsp;
After this, the woman deleted her post but people kept making new orders at their table. The woman assumed that someone downloaded her photo and continued making orders using the code.&nbsp;
In the screenshot of the order, it was mentioned that people ordered 1,850 portions of fresh duck blood, 2,580 portions of squid, and 9,990 portions of shrimp paste, each priced at a few dozen yuan.&nbsp;
The restaurant did not make Wang pay the bill as they moved her to a new table. Management also said that they could not track down the people who ordered the food nor they could stop people from doing so.&nbsp;

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said the presence of a large number of Chinese troops with weapons at the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh posed a "very critical" security challenge to India.&nbsp;Jaishankar also said the violent clashes at the LAC&nbsp;in June had a very deep public and political impact, and left the relationship between India and China &ldquo;profoundly disturbed&rdquo;. Speaking at a virtual event hosted by the Asia Society,&nbsp;Jaishankar said India has built a relationship with China over the course of the last 30 years &ldquo;and a basis for building that relationship has been peace and tranquillity along the LAC.

New York, PTI: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said the presence of a large number of Chinese troops with weapons at the Line of Actual Control(LAC) in eastern Ladakh posed a "very critical" security challenge to India.
Jaishankar also said the violent clashes at the de facto border in the Ladakh sector in June had a very deep public and political impact, and left the relationship between India and China &ldquo;profoundly disturbed&rdquo;.
"There are today a very large number of troops(of PLA) with weapons concentrated on that segment of the border and that is obviously a very critical security challenge that we face,&rdquo; said Jaishankar, speaking at a virtual event hosted by the Asia Society.
Tensions had escalated manifold between India and China after the Galwan Valley clashes in eastern Ladakh on June 15 in which 20 Indian Army personnel were killed. The Chinese People's Liberation Army(PLA) also suffered an unspecified number of casualties.
Jaishankar said India has built a relationship with China over the course of the last 30 years &ldquo;and a basis for building that relationship has been peace and tranquillity along the Line of Actual Control.&rdquo; He said there are multiple agreements, starting from 1993, which created the framework for that peace and tranquillity, which limited the military forces that came to the border areas, how to manage the border, how border troops behave when they approach each other.
&ldquo;So, from the conceptual level down to the behavioural level, there was an entire sort of framework out there. Now, what we saw this year was a departure from this entire series of agreements. The massing of large amount of Chinese forces on the border was clearly contrary to all of this.
&ldquo;And when you had friction points which have large number of troops at different points very close to each other, then something tragic like what happened on 15th of June happened," he said.
"To underline the enormity of that, it was the first military casualty we had after 1975. So what it has done is, it has obviously had a very deep public impact, very major political impact and it has left the relationship profoundly disturbed." In response to a question on what did the Chinese actually do on the border and why they did it, Jaishankar said: &ldquo;I haven&rsquo;t frankly got any reasonable explanation that I can tell myself from them on this matter." At the special Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) event, Jaishankar was in conversation with ASPI President Kevin Rudd, a former Australian prime minister. The two also spoke about Jaishankar&rsquo;s new book &lsquo;The India Way: Strategies for an Uncertain World".
Jaishankar said that apart from the Wuhan Summit in April 2018, there was a similar summit in Chennai last year and the idea of these parleys was that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping spend time, talk to each other directly about their concerns.
&ldquo;What happened this year of course was a very sharp departure. Now it's not just a sharp departure from the conversation, it's a sharp departure over a course of relationship over 30 years," he added.

PTI,&nbsp;New Delhi: After Pakistan, China is also creating a dispute at the border with India as if it was part of a "mission", Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday, as Indian and Chinese troops remain locked in a standoff in eastern Ladakh for over five months.
The defence minister, speaking at an online event after inaugurating 44 bridges, said India is not only facing the situations along the frontiers resolutely, but it is also bringing in major development including in border areas.
"You are well aware of the conditions created along our northern and eastern borders. First it was Pakistan, and now also by China, as if a border dispute is being created under a mission. We have a border of about 7,000 km with these countries where the tension continues," Singh said.
The defence minister was speaking after inaugurating the bridges built in strategically key areas of Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir.
A majority of these bridges are expected to significantly improve movement of troops in areas along the border with China in Ladakh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh sectors, officials said.
Both India and China held a series of diplomatic and military talks to resolve the border standoff. However, no breakthrough has been achieved to defuse the situation.
Singh said in the challenging times of COVID-19 and despite the border tensions and disputes caused by Pakistan and China, the country was not only resolutely facing them but also bringing about historical changes in all sectors of development.
The defence minister also laid the foundation stone for Nechiphu Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh. This 450 metre-long tunnel would ensure all-weather connectivity across Nechiphu pass.
The bridges inaugurated by Singh included 10 in Jammu and Kashmir, eight in Ladakh, two in Himachal Pradesh, four each in Punjab and Sikkim and eight each in Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh.
In his address, Singh complimented the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for their achievements in improving infrastructure in border areas and said that dedication of 44 bridges in one go in itself was a record.
He said the annual budget of BRO that varied from Rs 3,300 crore to Rs 4,600 crore in years between 2008 and 2016, saw a substantial rise and is pegged at over Rs 11,000 crore in 2020-21.
"There was no reduction of this budget despite COVID-19," he said Singh said construction of the bridges will benefit both the civilian population as well as the military in the areas.
"Our armed forces personnel are deployed in large numbers in areas where transport is not available throughout the year," he said, noting improvement in border infrastructure will significantly help armed forces.
"These roads are not only for strategic needs, but they also reflect equal participation of all stakeholders in the development of the nation," Singh said.
The defence minister praised the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for working tirelessly even during the coronavirus-triggered lockdown period.
The defence ministry said despite unprecedented snowfall breaking a 60-year record, all strategic passes and roads were cleared for traffic about one month before their average yearly opening dates.
"I am happy to know that over 2,200 kilometers of roads have been cut by the BRO during the last two years, using the latest technologies, and state-of-the-art equipment. Also, surfacing was carried out on about 4200 kms of roads," he added.
Amid the border standoff with China, India is expediting work on several key projects including on a strategic road linking Darcha in Himachal Pradesh with Ladakh that will criss-cross a number of high-altitude snow-bound passes.
The nearly 290-km-long road will be crucial for the movement of troops and heavy weaponry into the frontier bases of the Ladakh region and will provide a crucial link to the Kargil region.&nbsp;

The Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) has increased deployments opposite Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, 3 areas in Arunachal Pradesh &amp; opposite Bhutan. India has not yet crossed the LAC &amp; undertaken no quid pro quo. Logistics problems to maintain troops in Ladakh will increase once the Manali-Leh road closes for winter.

The foreign ministers from the Indo-Pacific nations known as the Quad group - the US, Japan, India and Australia - met in Tokyo on Tuesday in what was their first in-person talks since the coronavirus pandemic began.
The meeting took place in the backdrop of China's aggressive military behaviour in the Indo-Pacific, South China Sea and along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.
"The Indians are seeing 60,000 Chinese soldiers on their northern border,&rdquo; Pompeo told The Guy Benson Show in an interview on Friday after his return from Tokyo wherein he attended the second Quad ministerial with his counterparts from India, Japan and Australia.
"I was with my foreign minister counterparts from India, Australia, and Japan &ndash; a format that we call the Quad, four big democracies, four powerful economies, four nations, each of whom has real risk associated with the threats imposed &ndash; attempting to be imposed by the Chinese Communist Party. And they see it in their home countries too," he said.
Pompeo met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Tokyo on Tuesday and they underscored the need to work together to advance, peace, prosperity and security in the Indo-Pacific and around the globe. He described his meeting with Jaishankar as "productive." "They see, the people of their (Quad) nations understanding that we all slept on this for too long. For decades, the West allowed the Chinese Communist Party to walk all over us. The previous administration bent a knee, too often allowed China to steal our intellectual properties and the millions of jobs that came along with it. They see that in their country too," he said in the interview.
In another interview with Larry O&rsquo;Connor, Pompeo said in his meetings with his counterparts from Japan, India and Australia, they began to develop a set of understandings and policies that can jointly take these countries to work to present a true resistance to the threats that the Chinese Communist Party poses to each of these nations.
"They absolutely need the United States to be their ally and partner in this fight," he said.
"But they&rsquo;ve all seen it, whether it&rsquo;s the Indians, who are actually having a physical confrontation with the Chinese up in the Himalayas in the northeastern part of India, the Chinese have now begun to amass huge forces against India in the north," he said.
India and China are locked in a bitter border standoff in eastern Ladakh since early May that has significantly strained the bilateral ties.
