The UK on Wednesday promised to get tough on authoritarian regimes operating overseas, after newspaper claims about a London-based businessman's links to a secret Chinese police station.
The Times said Chinese businessman Lin Ruiyou operated a food delivery business in the London that doubled as an undeclared Chinese police station.
It said Lin had also been active in local politics for the ruling Conservatives, and reprinted on Wednesday photographs of him meeting former prime ministers Boris Johnson and Theresa May.
The daily said Lin had been active in a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) 'United Front' organisation, but that he denied working surreptitiously for provincial police to monitor other Chinese nationals in London.
Beijing's embassy in London said of The Times allegations: "We have made it clear many times that there are no so-called 'overseas police stations'.
"China adheres to the principle of non-interference in other countries' internal affairs, strictly observes international laws and respects the judicial sovereignty of all countries".
It warned against the media quoting "hearsay" and spreading "false accusations".

Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy held talks with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in California this week in a rare high-level, bipartisan meeting on US soil.

China announced sanctions Friday against two Asia-based organisations and Taiwan's representative in the US in response to the closely watched meeting this week between the US House Speaker and Taiwan's president.
The Prospect Foundation and the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats were being sanctioned for their involvement in promoting Taiwan independence &ldquo;under the guise of academic and research exchanges," China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson, Zhu Fenglian, said.

The meeting came as US-China relations have sunk to historic lows and as tensions between Taiwan and China have risen. China views any official exchanges between foreign governments and Taiwan as an attempt to raise Taipei's global status, and thus an infringement on Beijing's claims of sovereignty over the island.
China had vowed countermeasures against Taipei for its interactions with the US.
&ldquo;We will take resolute measures to punish the Taiwan independence' separatist forces and their actions, and resolutely safeguard our country's sovereignty and territorial integrity,&rdquo; China's Taiwan Affairs Office said in a statement Thursday, referring to Tsai and her political party as separatists.
The sanctions effectively are a travel ban on the individuals in charge of the organisations. They're also banned from working with Chinese organizations.

Tsai Ing-wen told reporters that America's "unwavering support" is a reassurance that the people of Taiwan are "not isolated" and "not alone".

Hours after India "outrightly" rejected China's claim of having renamed 11 places in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, Beijing continued its provocative discourse.
Mao Ning, spokesperson of the Chinese foreign affairs ministry on 4 April 2023 said, "Zangnan region (Arunachal Pradesh) is Chinese territory."
On the renaming controversy, she said, "In accordance with the relevant regulations of the State Council on the management of geographical names, the competent Chinese departments have standardised some geographical names in southern Tibet, which completely falls within China's sovereignty."
