Assessing the performance of kids under five, researchers found that children who indulged in excessive screen&nbsp;times of several hours were less able in comprehending what they were being told, compared to children with lower screen exposure.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Published in PLOS One, the study found that out of the 718 children studied, around 70 per cent&nbsp;had been exposed to excessive screen time.&nbsp;What&rsquo;s more, a majority of the children had been exposed to&nbsp;TV&nbsp;screens even before they turned one.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Explaining the developmental delay, researchers said generally children learn from their&nbsp;caregivers and are able to&nbsp;speak a lot of words by the age of three. But those exposed to excessive screen times are unable to do so.&nbsp;&nbsp;
When a parent&nbsp;says &lsquo;Come here and sit down,&rsquo; they are issuing two commands. But the child manages to understand just one, representing a developmental issue.&nbsp;Children exposed to screen times&nbsp;also&nbsp;imitate the slang or inappropriate words&nbsp;they pick up on television.&nbsp;

The study is based on data from 225 babies born in New York City&nbsp;which was the U.S. epicentre in the outbreak&rsquo;s early days.&nbsp;Although the differences observed were small, experts say it does make you question what is impairing the&nbsp;foundational skills&nbsp;such as motor skills in pandemic babies.&nbsp;
Interestingly, it was predicted that mask-wearing would affect babies&rsquo; communication but the study observed that pandemic babies, in fact, scored higher in communication skills.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Published in Science of the Total Environment, the study followed a cohort of 461 children over a three-year follow-up period. It was found that common cold and flu and gastrointestinal infection (mainly diarrhoea) account for 78 per cent of the disease burden.

Even after adjusting for factors&nbsp;like&nbsp;base psychopathology and any significant life events, the team was able to&nbsp;link poverty with&nbsp;reduced&nbsp;cognitive function, high-risk behaviours, social and educational function&nbsp;nearly 13 years after the children joined the study.&nbsp;

The researchers observed that&nbsp;childhood obesity was&nbsp;found to be linked with lower visual information processing speed and attention&nbsp;span.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Participants with all three risk factors&nbsp;(high weight, blood pressure and cholesterol)&nbsp;had poorer memory and associative learning, worse visual processing, decreased attention span, and slower reaction and movement time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Maintaining&nbsp;a&nbsp;healthy weight, blood pressure and cholesterol&nbsp;level&nbsp;in childhood&nbsp;may help protect brain function later in life, suggest the findings of a new study published in the&nbsp;American Heart Association&rsquo;s flagship journal&nbsp;Circulation.&nbsp;
The research claims to be the first to shine a light on cardiovascular risk factors in childhood as a&nbsp;possible&nbsp;cause&nbsp;for&nbsp;poor&nbsp;cognitive performance&nbsp;during midlife.&nbsp;&nbsp;
For the study, researchers followed the participants' cardiovascular risk factor profiles for 31 years from&nbsp;their&nbsp;childhood in 1980 to adulthood in 2011.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The researchers observed that&nbsp;childhood obesity was&nbsp;found to be linked with lower visual information processing speed and attention&nbsp;span.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Participants with all three risk factors&nbsp;(high weight, blood pressure and cholesterol)&nbsp;had poorer memory and associative learning, worse visual processing, decreased attention span, and slower reaction and movement time.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The researchers noted that there are currently no cures for major causes of neurodegenerative diseases like dementia, so it is important to learn how early life risk factors may affect the brain.&nbsp;These results&nbsp;can be used&nbsp;to turn the focus of brain health from old age and midlife to people in younger age groups, explained the team.
