Tapan Kumar Deka&rsquo;s term as Intelligence Bureau Chief was extended till June 2026, showcasing government confidence in his crisis management and counter-terrorism skills.

Counter-terrorism expert Tapan Kumar Deka was on Tuesday given an additional one-year term till June 2026 as the chief of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the second such extension for him.
This comes amid the evolving security situation in the wake of India's strike on May 7 on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir in retaliation against last month's Pahalgam terrorist attack.
Deka (62), a 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, was in June 2022 appointed as the IB chief for two years. His term was extended by one year in June last year.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved Deka's extension as the Director, Intelligence Bureau, for a period of one year beyond June 30, 2025, an order issued by the Personnel Ministry said.
His extension is "in relaxation of the provisions of FR 56 (d) and Rule 16 (1A) of All India Services (Death cum Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958", said the order that comes over a month ahead of completion of his extended term.
The rules allow the central government to extend in "public interest" the services of the chiefs of IB and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), Cabinet Secretary, Home Secretary and others, beyond the superannuation age of 60 years.
Known as a crisis manager in the power corridors and intelligence fraternity, Deka is considered an expert in 'operations' especially in Jammu and Kashmir as well as in the Northeast region of the country.
He served as the head of the operations wing of the IB for over two decades before finally taking over the reins of the agency. Deka was also in charge of the counter-assaults during the 26/11 Mumbai attack in 2008.
Adept in handling terrorism and Islamic radicalisation related cases, Deka had also led the operations against the terror group Indian Mujahideen, which was behind a series of subversive activities across the country in the 2000s.
He was also deputed in his home state Assam to handle the volatile situation that arose following large-scale violence after the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019.
Deka has been the go-to man for the government on the affairs of Jammu and Kashmir as he has vast experience in handling Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in the Union Territory.

In a shocking turn of events, Pallavi, the wife of former Karnataka police chief Om Prakash, has reportedly confessed to his murder during a video call with a neighbour. According to sources, Pallavi claimed, "I have killed the monster," during the conversation.&nbsp;
The tragic incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon when Pallavi and Om Prakash allegedly had a heated argument around 3:30 pm. It is reported that Pallavi incapacitated her husband by throwing chilli powder at him, then tied him up and stabbed him multiple times with two knives, as confirmed by a medical examination.
Following the murder, Pallavi allegedly video-called a neighbour, who is married to another police officer, to confess. The neighbour immediately informed her husband, leading to police intervention. When authorities arrived at the residence of Om Prakash, they detained both Pallavi and the couple's daughter, Kruthi, for questioning that lasted over 12 hours.
The police have identified Pallavi as the prime suspect, citing a potential motive linked to a dispute over real estate that Om Prakash had transferred to a family member. A police case has been filed based on a complaint by the couple's son, Kartikeya.
Kartikeya claims both his mother and sister suffer from depression and had previously threatened his father. Due to these threats, Om Prakash had temporarily moved to his sister&rsquo;s house for safety but was brought back by his daughter just 48 hours prior to the tragic event.
On the day of the murder, Kartikeya was at an event in Domlur when neighbours alerted him to the incident. He rushed home only to find police at the scene and his father dead in a pool of blood. He stated, "My mother, Pallavi, and my sister, Kruthi, have been suffering from depression and used to fight with my father frequently. I strongly suspect that they are involved in the murder of my father."
As investigations continue, no arrests have been made. Om Prakash, originally from Bihar, held a master's degree in Geology and had a distinguished career, having served as the Director General of Police of Karnataka in March 2025. He also led the Fire and Emergency Services and Home Guards before his tenure as police chief.

The chief whip of Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) Bharat Gogawale with other MLAs reached Vidhan Bhavan on Monday and gave notice to the Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly Rahul Narvekar asking for the handover of the Shiv Sena legislative party office at Vidhan Bhavan. Gogawale said that the office at Vidhan Bhavan belonged to the Shinde faction after the ECI order.
"We have given a notice to the Speaker. We are following the orders of ECI. We will take a call on how to proceed further. Since ECI has recognised us as Shiv Sena, so this office belongs to us now," he said.

Notably, both factions of Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray) have been fighting for the bow and arrow symbol of the party since Shinde (present Maharashtra Chief Minister) revolted against Thackeray last year.

While the Shinde faction welcomed the decision of being recognized as the real Shiv Sena, the Uddhav Thackeray faction said they would move the Supreme Court. The Uddhav Thackeray faction accused the Election Commission of haste and said the decision shows "it works as BJP agent".
