Tamil Nadu Schools Shut Due to Heavy Rains

The regional weather office has forecast more spells of rain in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengelpet and Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur districts in the state.

Widespread rains lashed parts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday, prompting authorities to declare a holiday for schools in Chennai and many other districts.
Overnight rains lashed Chennai and the neighbouring Tiruvallur, Chengelpet and Kancheepuram, besides Villupuram and some areas in the Cauvery delta region.
Following sharp showers, authorities declared a day&rsquo;s holiday for schools in districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengelpet, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore.
The regional weather office has forecast more spells of rain in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengelpet and Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur districts in the state, besides the neighbouring union territory Puducherry.&nbsp;

Majority of areas in Chennai continued to receive heavy rains throughout Saturday night till Sunday morning leaving many places flooded. This prompted authorities to issue directives to evacuate residents of low-lying areas. 
Around 3,000 people were shifted to relief centres. Flood-like situations like these have become a serious cause of concern for the locals as they fear snakes could enter their waterlogged houses.
Twitter users posted pictures and videos of inundated areas as reports of sewage water flowing on roads and into homes also came in.
Reservoirs and lakes are filled to capacity and people worry heavy rainfall could worsen the situation.
“Reduction in rains in Chennai likely compared to previous 2 days and lets see how clouds form later tonight. Vortex may likely form in Gulf of Mannar and heavy rains chance exist for South TN,” Pradeep John, an independent weather blogger, said in a tweet.
According to data, Chennai has recorded 1000mm of rain in a month for the fourth time for any month and the third time in November in 200 years.

&ldquo;Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy falls over Rayalaseema, north Tamilnadu, Puducherry &amp; Karaikal and south Coastal Andhra Pradesh on 18th November 2021,&rdquo; IMD warned.
