Chhattisgarh: Three Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security forces along the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border on Thursday, police said.
The gunfight took place at a forest in Karegutta hills in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district along the inter-state border in the morning when a joint team of security forces was out on an anti-Naxal operation, a senior police official said.
So far, bodies of three Naxalites have been recovered from the encounter site, and several other Maoists are also suspected to have been killed in the fierce gun battle, he said.
The operation, one of biggest counter-insurgency actions launched in Bastar region, involved around 10,000 security personnel belonging to different units, including the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Bastar Fighters, Special Task Force (STF), all units of the state police, as well as the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and its elite Commando Battalions for Resolute Action (CoBRA), he said.
The Telangana police were also assisting in the operation, the official said.
The operation was launched on Monday based on inputs about the presence of senior cadres of battalion no. 1, the strongest military formation of Maoists, and Telangana state committee of Maoists, and it will last for several days, he said.
The area surrounded by the dense forests and series of hills is considered to be the base of Maoists' battalion no. 1, he added.

He was just 19 when Naxalites killed his father, a former Salwa Judum leader. Defying the odds, he studied MBBS in Kyrgyzstan. Now, this man from a sleepy village in Chhattisgarh's insurgency-hit Bijapur district has entered the fray for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Meet Prakash Kumar Gota, an independent candidate from Scheduled-Tribe reserved Bastar Lok Sabha seat. Though the polls in Bastar are primarily a contest between the BJP and Congress, Gota claims he holds sway over tribal youths in the region. Talking to PTI, Gota said tribals constitute 32 per cent of the state's population, yet somehow, they have not been able to reap the benefits of development works and schemes. &ldquo;The two leading parties have always disappointed the people of Bastar, which is why I decided to enter the poll battle to bring real change in the region,&rdquo; he said. The 32-year-old member of the Muria tribe hails from Farsegarh village in Bijapur and is currently staying in a rented house in Jagdalpur, the headquarters of Bastar district, due to elections. His father, Chinna Ram Gota, an active leader of Salwa Judum, an anti-Maoist civil militia disbanded in 2011, was shot dead by Naxalites at his farm in Kukrel village, around 2 km away from Farsegarh in 2012.
Maoists also killed his father&rsquo;s older brother in a similar attack in 2013.
Gota said his father had worked with late Congress leader Mahendra Karma, popularly called &lsquo;Bastar tiger&rsquo; for his tough stand against Naxalites during the Salwa Judum movement. Karma was killed in the Jhiram valley Naxalite attack during the Congress's Parivartan Yatra in 2013. "I was a first-year student at a nursing college when my father was murdered. I had to quit my studies midway as my family&rsquo;s financial condition was not good. I have four brothers and two sisters. I am the second eldest. My mother is a housewife", Gota said.
Gota worked as a sub-contractor for construction works in the area and tendu leaf collection, and this helped him fund his medical studies in Kyrgyzstan.
&ldquo;In 2016, I went to Kyrgyzstan for MBBS. I tried unsuccessfully to avail an education loan. The struggle continued as I had to return home during the COVID-19 pandemic due to my family&rsquo;s financial condition,&rdquo; he said. Gota again worked as a subcontractor and managed to resume his medical studies in Kyrgyzstan and returned to India in June 2023 after completing his MBBS. He has, however, not appeared for the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) conducted by the National Board of Examination for eligibility to practice medicine in India.
&ldquo;Another tragedy struck my family in August last year when Naxalites abducted my older brother Mahesh Kumar, who was the chief of the publicity wing of the BJP's Bijapur district unit,&rdquo; he said.
Mahesh was later traced to a forest and admitted to a hospital in a critical condition. He has been in a coma ever since, he said. Asked why he did not join the BJP like his brother, Gota said he did not want to be in politics and wanted to take up a job.
&ldquo;There is a provision for a safe settlement and a government job under a rehabilitation scheme for victims of Maoist violence, but we did not get any of this. After all this, I was disappointed with the BJP and Congress,&rdquo; he said.
Over the years, Bastar has become a Maoist stronghold due to large-scale poverty, illiteracy, and lack of health facilities and amenities, Gota said.
&ldquo;My father contributed to the fight to free the region from the Naxalite menace, and I wanted to address all these issues to bring a change in Bastar,&rdquo; he said, citing why he wanted to contest the elections. However, Gota&rsquo;s decision to enter the fray was sudden. "When candidates had already started filing nominations for the first phase of the polls, my friends and social workers encouraged me to throw my hat in the ring," he said.
People have been voluntarily contributing to and providing vehicles for Gota&rsquo;s campaign.
&ldquo;I cannot spend money in electioneering like big parties. I have some savings that have come in handy," he said. Gota exuded confidence about securing the support of the youth in the region.
"BJP nominee Mahesh Kashyap is a communal person and does not take all religions together, while the Congress's candidate Kawasi Lakhma is inactive. Both parties have ignored their dedicated workers and leaders while giving tickets,&rdquo; he said.
Eleven Lok Sabha seats in Chhattisgarh will go to polls in three phases on April 19, April 26 and May 7, and the counting of votes will take place on June 4. Bastar will be the only seat to go to polls in the first phase. The ruling BJP has fielded Kashyap, a fresh face who had been an active member of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, and the Congress has given the ticket to Lakhma, an MLA who has served as a minister in the previous Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress government.

Three more bodies of Naxalites were recovered on Wednesday morning in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district where a fierce encounter took place between security personnel and Naxalites the previous day, police said.
With this, the number of Naxalites killed in the gun battle on Tuesday has risen to 13, they said.
Following the major anti-insurgency operation ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, the police on Tuesday found the bodies of 10 Naxalites, including a woman.
During the search operation still underway in the area, the bodies of three more Naxalites were recovered on Wednesday morning from a dense forest where the encounter took place, a senior police official said.
"The identity of the dead Naxalites was yet to be ascertained but prima facie, it appears that they belonged to the PLGA (People's Liberation Guerrilla Army) company no. 2 of Maoists," the official said.
On Tuesday, a gunfight broke out between security forces and Naxalites at around 6 am in the forest between Lendra and Korcholi villages under the Gangaloor police station area, where a joint team of security personnel was out on an anti-Naxal operation.
The intermittent firing lasted for a long time and the security forces continued search operations in the area.
A light machine gun (LMG), a .303 rifle, a 12-bore gun, a large number of barrel grenade launchers and shells, and other arms and ammunition were also seized from the spot, police earlier said.
Bijapur district comes under the Bastar Lok Sabha constituency, which will go to polls in the first phase of the general elections on April 19.&nbsp;

Female Nurse Injured by Bullet

But on the New Year's day, as her pain didn't subside, her family took her to a hospital where an X-ray showed a bullet in her arm.&nbsp;

In a bizarre incident, a woman nurse from Chhattisgarh, who had a wounded in her arm, initially believed that it was just a minor injury from some crackers. However, hours after she first noticed the wound, an X-ray showed that a bullet was lodged in one of her arms. Reports said that on the New Years eve, the nurse named Jay Laxmi went out for a walk with her husband and suddenly something struck her shoulder. The couple initially thought the strike on her arm may be because of a splinter from the New Year fireworks and she received first aid at her home in Kodagaon. But on the New Year's day, when she couldn't bear the pain from the wound as it didn't subside during the night, her family took her to a hospital. The doctor conducted an X-ray, and the report shocked her and her attendants. The X-ray showed a bullet was lodged in her arm. The doctor explained that the bullet had been fired from a very far distance, which is why it had not caused significant harm. The woman is now recovering at the hospital and the police are investigating the incident.

&nbsp;A District Reserve Guard (DRG) jawan was injured when a pressure improvised explosive device (IED) planted by Naxalites exploded in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district on Tuesday morning, police said.
The incident took place near Saletong village under Kistaram police station area.
A new camp of the state police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was set up in Saletong, a Naxal stronghold, on Tuesday to facilitate road construction and other development works.
Before setting up of the camp, joint teams of security personnel carried out demining operation in the vicinity to trace IEDs planted by Naxalites.
During that, DRG jawan Joga came in contact with a pressure IED, triggering the blast, the official said. Soon after this, the injured jawan was shifted to a hospital for treatment.
Search operation is currently underway in the area, the official said.
