By documenting hundreds of facial expressions in cats, researchers have discovered that they may not be as aloof as commonly believed.

A recent study conducted at the University of California in Los Angeles has revealed that cats can exhibit up to 276 distinct facial expressions, with some of them overlapping with expressions observed in humans.
While humans have approximately 44 distinct facial movements, the total number of expressions in humans is not precisely quantified, making direct comparisons with cats challenging.
Interestingly, chimpanzees possess roughly 357 unique expressions, indicating a significant contrast with both humans and cats.
The research team also speculated that some of the facial expressions shared between cats and humans may have been acquired by cats over their 10,000-year history of cohabitation with humans. Approximately 45.7% of the coded expressions conveyed friendliness, whereas 37% exhibited aggressiveness.

Police said 135 dogs and and 45 cats were removed; two of the dogs were dead when they were taken from the home and about eight animals were taken for emergency care

Some 180 dogs and cats were removed from a New Jersey home by a hazmat team after officials reported the animals were being kept in &ldquo;horrible and inhumane conditions,&rdquo; authorities say.
Brick Township police said officers entered the home Friday night and found stacks of animal crates containing dogs and cats, but because of the conditions &ldquo;the officers were forced to exit and requested that a hazmat team respond.&rdquo; Two arrests were made, officials said.
Police said rescuers in hazmat gear took about 10 hours to remove the animals. Police said 135 dogs and and 45 cats were removed; two of the dogs were dead when they were taken from the home and about eight animals were taken for emergency care, police added.

&ldquo;The home was full of animal waste and the animals were living in horrible and inhumane conditions," police said in a statement, adding the home was &ldquo;subsequently condemned&rdquo; by the township's building and code department.
The animals were taken to a number of shelters with dozens of agencies and groups aiding with the rescue, placement of the animals and support services, police said.
Two arrests on animal cruelty accusations were made and a child endangerment charge is also pending since a 16-year-old also was living in the residence, police said

According to the study conducted by scientists from the Universit&eacute; Paris, cats are fully aware when they are being addressed to by their owners but they choose to ignore them.&nbsp;
To conduct this research, the study authors recruited 16 housecats, all owned by French veterinary students. It was observed that when the cats heard a recording of their owner calling their name, the majority of them showed an increase in engagement like turning their ears towards the speakers, moving around with great enthusiasm and displaying dilated pupils.&nbsp;
On the other hand, the intensity of cats' behaviour decreased when they heard the voice of a stranger calling them.&nbsp;
The researchers wrote in the study that cats are very well capable of creating and fostering attachment bonds with humans.&nbsp;

This shows that the most likely route of disease transmission is from human to pet, rather than the other way round. Another critical factor is that there are similarities in the ACE2 of cats and humans.
According to a PNAS study, at very high risk are primates such as chimpanzee rhesus macaque. At high risk are species such as blue-eyed black lemur. Cats were found to have medium risk, while dogs had a low risk.
What about your pet cat?
Thus far, pet cats have not been a known source of human infection. There have been only the occasional cases of cats becoming ill from their owners, and they have only been mildly ill.
In a 2020 study in Wuhan, almost 15% of cats had antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 virus, suggesting they either were infected by people or other cats.
So, It would be prudent to keep some distance from your pet if you are ill with Covid, so as not to accidentally infect them.

A controversial research program that led scientists to kill thousands of cats over decades has been terminated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced that it is putting an end to its Agricultural Research Services division's experiments conducted since 1982 that involved infecting cats with toxoplasmosis. The disease is usually caused by eating undercooked contaminated meat. Once the cats were infected and the parasite harvested, the felines were put down. The agency announced that "toxoplasmosis research has been redirected and the use of cats as part of any research protocol in any ARS laboratory has been discontinued and will not be reinstated." The 14 remaining uninfected cats will be put up for adoption by agency employees.
