Russian researchers reported tumour size reduction and slowed tumour progression in the range of 60% to 80%, depending on cancer type, along with improved survival rates.

Officials said the initial use of the vaccine would be for colorectal cancer. They also pointed to advanced progress in vaccines for glioblastoma and specific melanomas, including ocular melanoma.
The announcement was made during the 10th Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, held from September 3&ndash;6 under the theme &ldquo;The Far East: Cooperation for Peace and Prosperity.&rdquo; The forum hosted more than 8,400 participants from over 75 countries, with over 100 thematic sessions across seven tracks.

New Delhi, Aug 21 (PTI): A significant portion of cancer medications remains outside the remit of the current pricing controls, a Parliamentary panel has observed. They have recommended that the scope of the Drugs Prices Control Order needs to be expanded to include a broader range of cancer drugs.
In the 163rd report presented by the Committee on Petitions, Rajya Sabha, headed by Narain Dass Gupta, it was emphasized that comprehensive market evaluations should be regularly conducted to monitor current drug prices and availability trends.
The panel acknowledged the progress made in recent years towards improving the regulatory framework for cancer drug pricing and enhancing affordability. However, they noted that a significant number of these drugs remain outside the current price control mechanisms.
With the introduction of the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM) 2022, the number of anti-cancer medications under price control increased from 40 in 2011 to 63 in 2022. Yet, many oncology drugs are not governed by the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013, keeping them exempt from any statutory price limits, it noted.
This exclusion leads to prohibitively high pricing, limiting access for many patients. The report suggests the creation of a robust oversight mechanism to periodically review regulatory effectiveness and identify gaps.
Implementing these recommendations could greatly reduce the financial strain on cancer patients and their families. The Committee further advocated for consistent monitoring and maintaining the quality of available generic medicines. There is hesitance among medical professionals to prescribe these due to their lack of WHO-GMP certification.
Although there are provisions for rapid access to new cancer treatments, issues such as regulatory delays, limited domestic R&amp;D, and pricing barriers hinder equitable access. Enhancing domestic research infrastructure, prioritizing value-based approvals, and supporting local development of novel oncology therapies are recommended measures.
The panel urged the government to foster research within the private sector and encourage pharmaceutical companies to invest in advanced oncology research. A lack of coordination between private medical institutions and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare regarding clinical trial approvals was noted, suggesting collaboration to optimally benefit patients.
The Committee called for the swift adoption of effective field technologies, like Magna-visualisers, and the national expansion of gallbladder cancer risk mapping, particularly in high-risk and underserved regions.
Investment in regional prevention strategies and health literacy programs, especially in high-incidence areas like the Northeast, should be significantly increased, the report stated.
Institutions such as the India Cancer Research Consortium should be mandated to release annual performance and progress reports to showcase the translation of research into clinical practice. Systems to track patient outcomes and evaluate treatment guideline cost-effectiveness should be developed to support evidence-based policy making.
The Committee emphasized the need for system-wide improvements to ensure effectiveness, equity, and responsiveness in cancer treatment outcomes in India. Recommendations included regular audits and structured training workshops to enforce adherence to SOPs across diagnostic and research labs.
Recognizing the National Program for Palliative Care's rollout, the Committee recommended its wider dissemination to reach more patients. Outcomes of palliative care should be tracked with robust indicators to assess the impact on patients' quality of life.
These measures aim to create a data-driven, patient-centered, and outcome-focused cancer care ecosystem. Enhanced use of data from the National Cancer Registry Programme to formulate state-specific policies and establish a Clinical Trial Outcome Registry for informed decisions, transparency, and accountability was also suggested.
Continued cooperation between central and state governments, public-private partnerships, and community involvement is crucial for maintaining momentum and ensuring equitable cancer care.
According to AIIMS, Jhajjar, initiatives like population-based screening for common cancers and Day Care Centre openings are positives of the NPCDCS program, the panel noted.
To improve robustness, district-level facilities for early cancer diagnostics should be enhanced, and the Cancer Registry Programme and NPCDCS should be integrated for data-driven cancer service planning and implementation.
A focus on cancer awareness and behavior change activities is required to combat the stigma associated with the disease. Radiotherapy and Day Care Centres should be decentralized phase-wise for better cancer detection and early management, the Committee concluded.

A new study in The Lancet warns that climate change may increase arsenic levels in rice, elevating cancer risks in Asia by 2050.

Climate change could be resulting in higher levels of arsenic in rice, potentially increasing lifetime cancer and health risks for people in Asian countries by 2050, according to a new study published in The Lancet Planetary Health journal.
Researchers from Columbia University, US, explained that an increase in temperatures above 2 degrees Celsius and rising levels of carbon dioxide could be causing changes in soil chemistry, favouring arsenic, which gets more easily absorbed into a rice grain.
Contaminated soil and irrigated water while growing rice are known to increase inorganic arsenic in rice.
An increased exposure to arsenic is known to heighten the risk of cancers of the lung, bladder and skin, among others. Rice can also absorb additional arsenic from water used for cooking.
"Our results suggest that this increase in arsenic levels could significantly elevate the incidence of heart disease, diabetes, and other non-cancer health effects," author Lewis Ziska, associate professor of environmental health sciences, Columbia University, said.
"As rice is a dietary staple in many parts of the world, these changes could lead to a substantial rise in the global burden of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and other arsenic-related health issues," Ziska said.
Studies have revealed rice consumption to be a major health threat to people in South and Southeast Asian countries, including India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam, where rice is the staple food.
The combined effects of rising CO2 and temperatures on arsenic accumulation in rice have not been studied in detail until now, the team said.
In this study, the researchers measured the effects of rising temperatures and carbon dioxide on 28 rice strains over 10 years in the field. Using models, inorganic arsenic doses and health risks for seven Asian countries -- Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Vietnam -- were estimated.
"We found that temperature and CO2 act synergistically to increase arsenic concentrations in rice, compounding dietary arsenic exposures for rice consumers and leading to projected cancer cases in the tens of millions among populations of Asian countries in 2050," according to the study.
Projected average cases of bladder and lung cancer in 2050 were found to increase in proportion with exposure to arsenic, with the highest risk projections (44 per cent) seen for rising temperatures and carbon dioxide levels.
China was projected to see 1.34 crore cases of cancer attributable to arsenic in rice in 2050 -- the highest among the seven countries studied.
"Emerging evidence also suggests that arsenic exposure may be linked to diabetes, adverse pregnancy outcomes, neurodevelopmental issues, and immune system effects," Ziska said.
The authors suggested measures to reduce arsenic exposure, including breeding plants to minimise arsenic uptake and improved soil management in rice paddies, along with public health initiatives.

The Tata Institute in Mumbai has made a groundbreaking discovery to prevent cancer recurrence. Their ten years of research has formulated a tablet designed to thwart cancer re-occurrence in patients while notably mitigating the adverse effects associated with treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy.
<h3>The research found that dying cancer cells release chromatin particles</h3>
Speaking with NDTV, senior cancer surgeon at Tata Memorial Hospital, Dr Rajendra Badve explained how the research was done on rats. Rats were injected with cancerous cells leading to formation of tumours in their body. The rats were then treated with radiation therapy, surgery and cherotherapy. The research found that dying cancer cells release chromatin particles which travel to healthy blood cells making them cancerous.
To prevent this, the scientists provided pro-oxidant tablets consisting of resveratrol and copper (R+Cu) to the rats. The R+Cu tablets generate oxygen radicals, which destroy these chromatin particles.&nbsp;
When taken orally, the R+Cu tablets help in preventing the spread of these chromatin particles and reduces chemotherapy toxicity.
Dubbed as the 'magic of R+Cu', the tablets are expected to reduce the side effects of cancer treatment by about 50% and is effective in preventing cancer recurrence by around 30%. It is promising in treating pancreas, lungs, and oral cavity cancers.
<h3>Approval pending from the FSSAI</h3>
The tablet is presently pending approval from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). After being approved, they are expected to be available in stores around June or July at just Rs 100. Trials on humans is also under trial and will take approximately five more years to be complete.

India&rsquo;s first oral suspension of the chemotherapy drug has been developed by the Tata Memorial Hospital.
The drug named PREVAL has been developed with a collaboration with Advanced Centre for Training Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC).
This seminal development is meant to revolutionise cancer treatment, specifically hematologic malignancies such as Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, and give a more precise and child-friendly alternative to traditional tablets.
Mercaptopurine is a medication used in the treatment of a specific type of cancer, particularly Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. The medication belongs to the class of drugs known as antimetabolites, which is majorly responsible to interfere with the growth and division of cancer cells.
How to use PREVALL?
PREVALL can used by mixing 10mg &nbsp;of the medicine with 100 ml liquid. It also comes with a syringe and a Press In Bottle Adapter for precise dosing based on a patient&rsquo;s weight or body surface area.
The Indian Express reported that Dr Girish Chinnaswamy, head of paediatric oncology department at the hospital, emphasised the importance of optimal care for children with curable cancers.&nbsp;
&ldquo;The formulations like PREVALL contribute to dose optimisation, enhancing adherence, and maximising drug efficacy. PREVALL&rsquo;s launch is a major advancement, offering a more accurate and kid-friendly alternative to tablets. Previously, crushing tablets or alternate dosing was common for children," he said.&nbsp;

The researchers acknowledge that further research is necessary to comprehensively comprehend the reasons behind this rise in cancer cases. Nevertheless, they emphasize the significance of enhancing both the detection and prevention of cancer in younger adults.
The study's results indicate that North America, Australasia, and Western Europe are the regions experiencing the highest rates of early-onset diseases. However, a deeper investigation is required to pinpoint the precise underlying causes of this phenomenon.

A breakthrough discovery has come to light as scientists at the Helmholts Munich research centre used a transparent mouse to detect minuscule cancerous tumours.&nbsp;
For this, researchers rendered a dead mouse and turned it transparent. This research was led by Professor Ali Ert&uuml;rk. Now, for this technique, they have used chemical substances to highlight specific tissues, enabling them to conduct scans with detail and precision.&nbsp;
Professor Ert&uuml;rk told BBC that this technique is important because cancer drugs have to be used in mice before they are tested on humans.&nbsp;
Prof Ert&uuml;rk further said, "MRI and PET scans would show you only big tumours. Ours show tumours at the single cell, which they absolutely can't. Current drugs extend life by a few years and then the cancer comes back. This is because the development process never included eliminating those tiny tumours, which were never visible."

The issue has already been examined in the department in consultation with Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the statement said. "WHO country office in India confirmed to FSSAI that no such advisory has been issued by WHO to Government of India ever," it added.

The department said that this kind of false information being circulated on social media and on WhatsApp should not be given any credence whatsoever. The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying and FSSAI are taking all possible steps to help supply of safe and good quality milk to the consumers across the country, the statement said.
Milk production in the country has increased from 146.3 million tonnes in 2014-15 to 221.06 million tonnes (66.56 crore litres per day) in 2021-22 with the annual Growth Rate of 6.1 per cent.
The department had also conducted a study on demand of milk and milk product in India during 2019. As per the study, the total consumption at the all India level in 2019 was 162.4 million metric tonnes (44.50 Crore Kg per day) for milk and milk products.
Thus, milk production in the country is sufficient to meet the domestic demand, the department added. The quality of milk and milk products sold in market is governed by standards laid down and enforced by the FSSAI.
