Parties wrap up intense Ludhiana West bypoll campaigns, vital for Punjab politics ahead of 2024 elections.

Parties conclude intense campaigning in Ludhiana West bypoll, key for Punjab ahead of 2024 elections.

Campaigning for the bypoll to the Ludhiana West assembly segment in Punjab came to an end on Tuesday evening with the major parties - AAP, Congress, BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal - making last-ditch efforts to mobilise support for their respective candidates.
Hours before the campaigning ended at 6 pm, political leaders intensified canvassing to woo voters of the urban constituency of Punjab's industrial hub.
The Ludhiana West assembly seat fell vacant following the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January.
Polling will be held from 7 am till 6 pm on June 19 and the counting will be held on June 23.
There are a total of 14 candidates in the fray for the by-election. A total of 1.74 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise, 84,825 of them women and 10 of third gender.
There will be a total of 194 polling stations for the bypoll and 100 percent live webcasting of polling stations, officials said.
The ruling AAP has fielded Rajya Sabha member Sanjeev Arora for the bypoll.
Arora (61) is a Ludhiana-based industrialist and is also known for his social welfare work. He runs the Krishna Pran Breast Cancer Charitable Trust. Arora has been a member of the Rajya Sabha since 2022.
The AAP took out a roadshow during the day in support of Arora. It was led by the party's Punjab in-charge and former deputy chief minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia. Punjab AAP president Aman Arora and Sanjeev Arora were also part of it.
Sisodia urged voters to vote for the party candidate in the bypoll. "AAP is committed to transforming Ludhiana West into a model constituency. By voting for Sanjeev Arora, you will ensure progress and clean governance for your constituency." The opposition party Congress has placed its bet on former minister and Punjab Congress working president Bharat Bhushan Ashu (51).
Ashu had remained MLA twice from this seat in 2012 and 2017. He was defeated by Gogi by a margin of 7,512 votes in the 2022 Punjab assembly polls. Ashu had remained food and civil supplies minister in the previous Congress regime.
The BJP has field party's senior leader Jiwan Gupta. He is a member of the core committee of Punjab BJP. He had earlier remained the party's state general secretary.
The SAD named Parupkar Singh Ghuman as its candidate for the bypoll. Ghuman is a lawyer and the former president of Ludhiana bar association.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, along with AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal aggressively campaigned in favour of party nominee Arora.
They urged voters to vote for Arora with Kejriwal announcing that the AAP candidate will be made the cabinet minister if he is elected in the bypoll.
Mann described the election as a battle between "humility" and "arrogance" while highlighting that Arora represents "simplicity" while the Congress nominee is known for "arrogance." During canvassing, Mann said the bypoll is a clear choice between "pyaar (love) and 'hankaar' (arrogance)." Kejriwal lauded Arora for his philanthropic efforts, mentioning his role in raising Rs 16 crore for a child struggling with a rare disease in Delhi, and assured the public that with Arora's election, Ludhiana West would witness "unparalleled development." The Ludhiana West bypoll is seen as a litmus test for Mann and the ruling party's national leadership which has been aggressively campaigning to retain this seat.
In November last year, the AAP had won three out of four assembly bypolls.
Prior to that the party had party faced a drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls in which it could win only three of 13 parliamentary constituencies.
Punjab Congress leaders including party's general secretary in-charge Punjab and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, former Chief Minister and MP Charanjit Singh Channi, Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Amritsar MP Gurjit Singh Aujla, MLAs Rana Gurjit Singh, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Pargat Singh and Aruna Chaudhary campaigned for Ashu.
While Ashu reminded voters of the previous record of development in the constituency, he said that his electoral fight was not against Arora, but Kejriwal, who was allegedly fighting for his own backdoor entry to Rajya Sabha from Punjab.
Prestige is at stake for the BJP in the bypoll as well. Leaders including Union Ministers Hardeep Singh Puri, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, BJP leader Tarun Chugh, former union minister Anurag Thakur and Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar canvassed for Gupta.
Delhi Chief Minister Gupta during the poll campaign alleged that Bhagwant Mann is just a "mukhota" (mask) as the Punjab government is being run by the leaders of the AAP who have been "rejected" by people of the national capital.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, BJP's Ravneet Singh Bittu had led from the Ludhiana West assembly segment, which is part of the Ludhiana parliamentary seat. However, he lost to Congress nominee Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.
The Ludhiana West bypoll is also going to be a test of the leadership of Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, which is looking to resurrect itself after a series of crushing electoral losses.
Badal, who was elected again as party president in April after he resigned following being declared 'tankhaiya' (guilty of religious misconduct) by the Akal Takht last year, led his party's poll campaign for the party nominee Parupkar Singh Ghuman.
Badal was camping in Ludhiana for poll campaigning and meeting party workers, asking them to put in their best efforts to register victory in the bypoll.
Three rebel leaders - Sohan Singh Thandal, Anil Joshi and Sikander Singh Maluka - recently returned to the party fold with Badal saying the party was witnessing a steady comeback of leaders who left the party for various reasons in the past.
In the 2022 assembly polls, SAD candidate Maheshinder Singh Grewal had lost his security deposit from the Ludhiana West seat.

With the war against drugs &ldquo;Yudh Nashian Virudh&rdquo; waged on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to eradicate drug menace from state entered 41st day, Punjab Police on Thursday arrested 84 drug smugglers and recovered 2.5 kg heroin, 86 kg poppy husk, and ₹70400 drug money from their possession. With this, the number of total drug smugglers arrested has reached to 5621 in just 41 days.
The operation was conducted on the directions of Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav simultaneously in all 28 Police districts of the state.
Notably, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann has asked the Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendent of Police to make Punjab drug free state. The Punjab government has also constituted a 5-member Cabinet Sub Committee led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema to monitor the war against drugs. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;
Divulging details, Special DGP Law and Order Arpit Shukla informed that over 200 Police teams, comprising over 1200 police personnel, under the supervision of 86 gazetted officers have conducted raids at as many as 452 locations across the state leading to the registration of 49 first information reports (FIRs) across the state. Police teams have also checked as many as 482 suspicious persons during the day long operation, he added.
The Special DGP said that with the state government has enforced a three-pronged strategy&mdash; Enforcement, Deaddiction and Prevention (EDP)&mdash; to eradicate drugs from the state, the Punjab Police as part of &lsquo;De-addiction&rsquo; has convinced two persons to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment.
Meanwhile, Punjab Police has also carried out search operation at different jails in six districts&mdash; Bathinda, Mansa, Barnala, Patiala, Sangrur and SAS Nagar&mdash; to check any illegal activities in the jail. &ldquo;Our Police teams have thoroughly searched every nook and corner including barracks, kitchen and toilets in the jail complex,&rdquo; said Special DGP Arpit Shukla.

&ldquo;This is a decisive crusade against drugs and we all pledge that we will eliminate the curse of drugs from state&rdquo; said the Chief Minister while addressing the gathering here in a march past aimed at creating awareness against the menace of drugs.
The Chief Minister said that enough is enough and now the state government will not sit idly and watch the smugglers bloom at the cost of the dead bodies and pyres of the drug victims. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the state government has already snapped the supply line of drugs and big fishes involved in this heinous crime have been put behind the bars.
He said that for the first time the property of the drug smugglers acquired illegally are being destroyed/ confiscated by the state government so that it acts as a deterrent for others.
The Chief Minister said that the drug problem has become serious in the state as due to the lackluster performance of the previous regimes it has now entered our veins.
However, Bhagwant Singh Mann said that they are fortunate to have got the guidance of National Convener of the Aam Aadmi Party Arvind Kejriwal, who apart from revolutionizing several sectors, also has the credit of eradicating several maladies from Delhi.
He envisioned that under the continuous guidance of former Delhi Chief Minister, Punjab will soon be free from this menace of drugs.&nbsp;
The Chief Minister said that war against drugs has to be transformed into a mass movement as it is not only the work of Police but entire civil society too. He said that it is heartening that people are coming forward to take part in this campaign and anti-drug resolutions are being passed in several villages.
Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the state government has issued a Whatsapp helpline number 9779100200 for seeking the support of the people in this war.
The Chief Minister asked the people to share any information pertaining to the drug smugglers operative in their area or city on this Whatsapp number. He said that the identity of the caller will be kept secret and will not be disclosed to anyone.
Bhagwant Singh Mann said that fulsome support and cooperation of the people is imperative in this ambitious war against drugs due to which people should support this move in a big way.
The Chief Minister said that Punjab Police has a glorious legacy of serving the country by making countless sacrifices. He said that apart from discharging its core duty of maintaining law and order, the Punjab Police has always safeguarded the interests of the country and its people.
Bhagwant Singh Mann said that now the Punjab Police is playing a vanguard role in wiping out the menace of drugs from the state.
The Chief Minister said that the need of the hour is that the common man plays a proactive role in the war against drugs.
He said that now the time has come when everyone should rise against the scourge of drugs by decimating a handful of smugglers who are ruining the generations of the state for minting money.
Bhagwant Singh Mann urged every resident to be a soldier in this war against drugs so that Punjab is made completely drug free.

Reflecting on his extensive career, Damodaran remembers serving under nine different prime ministers, contributing to various rural sanitation programs that transformed numerous villages into examples of cleanliness and hygiene.
"My journey started when Rajiv Gandhi was Prime Minister. Since then, I've worked under nine prime ministers, participating in different rural sanitation programs to make villages cleaner," he added.
Looking forward, Damodaran aims for a cleaner, greener Tiruchirappalli. He advocates for initiatives like building a Ring Road to ease traffic and constructing flyovers at strategic spots in the city.
The Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award, was bestowed upon Damodaran for his significant contributions to social work, particularly in promoting sanitation in villages and slums across South India.

He said he can do much more for Himachal if people "anukul" (favourable) to him are in power here and asked them to break the convention of voting out incumbent governments to ensure the state's development.
"Congress by nature is an enemy of development. It is the BJP that can take Himachal to new heights of development. Therefore, it is necessary for the BJP government to retain power... It is a straight calculation.
"A BJP government should be formed in Himachal so that it can benefit from Delhi (the central government). It will bring double benefits," he told people at a rally in Sujanpur in Hamirpur district.

A storyteller, Gadkari had at the book launch narrated an old incident where he had taken up the cause of building a road to a village in Maharashtra and had told the concerned official that if he stood by him it was fine but even otherwise it was fine with him.
"... I am not bothered about the consequences but I will do this job. If possible stand by me else I am not bothered," he had said at the book launch referring to his conversation with the concerned official.

A 9-year-old boy who was camping at an Iowa state park with his parents and 6-year-old sister survived a shooting that killed the rest of his family.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety identified the victims as Tyler Schmidt, 42; his 42-year-old wife, Sarah Schmidt; and their 6-year-old daughter, Lula Schmidt, all of Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Their bodies were found in their tent early Friday at the Maquoketa Caves State Park Campground, about 180 miles (290 kilometers) east of Des Moines.
Authorities said the suspected gunman, 23-year-old Anthony Sherwin, was found dead Friday in a wooded area of the park with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Mitch Mortvedt, assistant director of the Department of Public Safety’s division of criminal investigation, told The Associated Press on Saturday that the motive for the attack was still unknown.
“We don’t know what led up to this, what precipitated it,” he said, adding that so far, “the investigation has not revealed any early interaction between the Schmidt family and him.”
Adam Morehouse, Sarah Schmidt's brother, said the family had no connection to Sherwin and he believed it was a “completely random act.”
Cedar Falls Mayor Rob Green, who said he is a neighbor of the Schmidts, posted on Facebook on Friday that the couple's 9-year-old son, Arlo, “survived the attack, and is safe.”
The post did not say whether Arlo was in the tent or even at the campsite when the shootings happened, and the mayor told the AP he didn't have those details.
Morehouse confirmed Arlo was on the family's camping trip, but said he did not know exactly where the boy was at the time of the shooting or know specifics about how it unfolded.
“He is with family and he is OK, but I have not had any interaction with him,” Morehouse said Saturday. “As far as I know, he was uninjured physically.”

A 9-year-old boy who was camping at an Iowa state park with his parents and 6-year-old sister survived a shooting that killed the rest of his family.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety identified the victims as Tyler Schmidt, 42; his 42-year-old wife, Sarah Schmidt; and their 6-year-old daughter, Lula Schmidt, all of Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Their bodies were found in their tent early Friday at the Maquoketa Caves State Park Campground, about 180 miles (290 kilometers) east of Des Moines.
Authorities said the suspected gunman, 23-year-old Anthony Sherwin, was found dead Friday in a wooded area of the park with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Mitch Mortvedt, assistant director of the Department of Public Safety&rsquo;s division of criminal investigation, told The Associated Press on Saturday that the motive for the attack was still unknown.
&ldquo;We don&rsquo;t know what led up to this, what precipitated it,&rdquo; he said, adding that so far, &ldquo;the investigation has not revealed any early interaction between the Schmidt family and him.&rdquo;
Adam Morehouse, Sarah Schmidt's brother, said the family had no connection to Sherwin and he believed it was a &ldquo;completely random act.&rdquo;
Cedar Falls Mayor Rob Green, who said he is a neighbor of the Schmidts, posted on Facebook on Friday that the couple's 9-year-old son, Arlo, &ldquo;survived the attack, and is safe.&rdquo;
The post did not say whether Arlo was in the tent or even at the campsite when the shootings happened, and the mayor told the AP he didn't have those details.
Morehouse confirmed Arlo was on the family's camping trip, but said he did not know exactly where the boy was at the time of the shooting or know specifics about how it unfolded.
&ldquo;He is with family and he is OK, but I have not had any interaction with him,&rdquo; Morehouse said Saturday. &ldquo;As far as I know, he was uninjured physically.&rdquo;
By Saturday evening, more than $75,000 had flowed into a GoFundMe page created for Arlo.
