Thailand's army accused Cambodia of launching attacks in multiple areas early Tuesday, but Cambodia said there was no firing in any location. The Thai army then reported exchanges of gunfire into Wednesday morning but said there was no use of heavy artillery.
&ldquo;Such act of aggression constitutes once again a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement by Cambodian forces and their apparent lack of good faith,&rdquo; said Thailand's Foreign Ministry in a statement Wednesday morning.
By Wednesday afternoon, however, both sides appeared to have reaffirmed their commitment to a ceasefire, with representatives appearing smiling in a photo with a Chinese vice minister Sun Weidong at a meeting in Shanghai.
&ldquo;Cambodia and Thailand reiterated to China their commitment to the ceasefire consensus and expressed appreciation for China's positive role in de-escalating the situation,&rdquo; a statement from China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
China said the informal meeting was its &ldquo;latest diplomatic effort&rdquo; and it was playing a &ldquo;constructive role in resolving their border dispute," according to the same statement.
Violating the ceasefire The fighting Tuesday night occurred in Phu Makhuea, a mountain in a disputed area next to Thaikand's Sisaket province.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting prime minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, agreed on Monday to an &ldquo;unconditional&rdquo; halt in fighting, which has killed at least 41 people.
The meeting was hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as annual chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. He called the ceasefire a &ldquo;vital first step towards de-escalation and the restoration of peace and security.&rdquo; The ceasefire was brokered with US pressure and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington applauded the ceasefire declaration.
&ldquo;President (Donald) Trump and I are committed to an immediate cessation of violence and expect the governments of Cambodia and Thailand to fully honour their commitments to end this conflict,&rdquo; Rubio said in a statement.
Hun Manet said Tuesday that Trump had called to offer congratulations for the peace move. He posted on social media that Trump pledged the US would join the monitoring process along with Malaysia to ensure the ceasefire is implemented.
The Thai government separately said it has complained to Malaysia, the US and China about Cambodia's alleged breach of the ceasefire agreement previously.
By Wednesday, there were signs of calm along the border, with some of the more than 260,000 people displaced by the fighting returning to their homes.
Cambodia and Thailand have clashed in the past over their 800-kilometre border.
The fighting began Thursday after a land mine explosion along the border wounded five Thai soldiers. Tensions had been growing since May when a Cambodian soldier was killed in a confrontation that created a diplomatic rift and roiled Thailand's domestic politics.
Residents face limbo While some residents near the border have started returning home, many remain behind in evacuation shelters, uncertain of their fate.
Vendor Kanchana Sukjit, 33, said she fled home near the Ta Muen Thom temple with a few belongings and her small white-coloured dog Nam Khaeng, which means ice in Thai. The temple had been one of the main flashpoints in the conflict over the past week.
It was the first time she had to flee home like this and she was worried as she waited for clearer instructions about what happens next.
&ldquo;I'm stressed when I read the news, like when reports said they were going to fire (a long-range rocket), because my home is right next to a military camp. I was quite stressed that day because I was afraid that my home would get caught in a crossfire,&rdquo; she said.

Attaching a post by the Tourism Authority of Thailand, it said that the places mentioned "are not recommended" for travelling.
The tourism authority said that "several attractions" in Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Sisaket, Buriram, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi and Trat provinces are not recommended for visiting.&nbsp;

MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in a statement on Saturday said that the Indian mission in Cambodia is working closely with authorities to crack down on cyber slavery. Of the 250 Indians rescued, 75 were repatriated in the last three months.
"We have seen media reports on Indian nationals stuck in Cambodia. Our Embassy in Cambodia has been promptly responding to complaints from Indian nationals who were lured with employment opportunities to that country but were forced to undertake illegal cyber work," it said on Satuday.
"Collaborating closely with Cambodian authorities, it has rescued and repatriated about 250 Indians, of which 75 in just the last three months," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was quoted as saying in the statement.
Several advisories have also been issued by the ministry and the Embassy of India in Cambodia to "our nationals about such scams", the statement said.
The MEA said that it issued the statement in response to media queries.
"We remain committed to helping all those Indian nationals in Cambodia who seek our support. We are also working with Cambodian authorities and with agencies in India to crack down on those responsible for these fraudulent schemes," Jaiswal said.&nbsp;

Rescuers scoured the charred ruins of a Cambodian hotel and casino complex Friday as the death toll from a fire that forced people to jump from windows rose to 25.
Hundreds of people are believed to have been inside the Grand Diamond City venue, located in the town of Poipet within sight of the Thai border, when the blaze broke out late Wednesday night.
"The death toll now is around 25," said Sek Sokhom, director of the information department for the province of Banteay Meanchey, adding that some of the bodies recovered were found in stairways.
Photos and video from the scene showed people huddling on windowsills to escape the flames, with one rescuer telling AFP he saw people desperately jumping from the roof as the blaze inched closer.
Earlier, a Cambodian police officer told AFP they believed "there are many more bodies still trapped inside" as rescuers began entering the gutted complex.
Hundreds of Cambodian soldiers and police officers, along with volunteers from Thailand, are taking part in the search.

Jakkapong Ruengdech, a team leader with Thai rescue group the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, told AFP they needed to establish if there was still intense smoke or fire inside.
Another rescuer from the group, who asked not to be named, described the building as "unstable" and said the search would have to proceed cautiously.

The stingray was snagged by a local fisherman south of Stung Treng in northeastern Cambodia. The fisherman alerted a nearby team of scientists from the Wonders of the Mekong project, which has publicized its conservation work in communities along the river.
The scientists arrived within hours of getting a post-midnight call with the news, and were amazed at what they saw.
&ldquo;Yeah, when you see a fish this size, especially in freshwater, it is hard to comprehend, so I think all of our team was stunned,&rdquo; Wonders of the Mekong leader Zeb Hogan said in an online interview from the University of Nevada in Reno. The university is partnering with the Cambodian Fisheries Administration and USAID, the U.S. government's international development agency.
Freshwater fish are defined as those that spend their entire lives in freshwater, as opposed to giant marine species such as bluefin tuna and marlin, or fish that migrate between fresh and saltwater like the huge beluga sturgeon.
The stingray's catch was not just about setting a new record, he said.
&ldquo;The fact that the fish can still get this big is a hopeful sign for the Mekong River, &rdquo; Hogan said, noting that the waterway faces many environmental challenges.
The Mekong River runs through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. It is home to several species of giant freshwater fish but environmental pressures are rising. In particular, scientists fear a major program of dam building in recent years may be seriously disrupting spawning grounds.
&ldquo;Big fish globally are endangered. They're high-value species. They take a long time to mature. So if they're fished before they mature, they don't have a chance to reproduce,&rdquo; Hogan said. &ldquo;A lot of these big fish are migratory, so they need large areas to survive. They're impacted by things like habitat fragmentation from dams, obviously impacted by overfishing. So about 70% of giant freshwater fish globally are threatened with extinction, and all of the Mekong species.&rdquo; The team that rushed to the site inserted a tagging device near the tail of the mighty fish before releasing it. The device will send tracking information for the next year, providing unprecedented data on giant stingray behavior in Cambodia.
&ldquo;The giant stingray is a very poorly understood fish. Its name, even its scientific name, has changed several times in the last 20 years,&rdquo; Hogan said. &ldquo;It's found throughout Southeast Asia, but we have almost no information about it. We don't know about its life history. We don't know about its ecology, about its migration patters.&rdquo; Researchers say it's the fourth giant stingray reported in the same area in the past two months, all of them females. They think this may be a spawning hotspot for the species.
