Sleeping for an extra hour every night can help you lose weight, study finds.

According to a new study, adding an hour or so of sleep every night could help people reduce their daily calorie intake by 270 calories. The study was published in the journal Jama Internal Medicine.

Researchers from the University of Chicago carried out a clinical trial with 80 adults to examine how sleep interacts with obesity and found that getting more sleep could lead to a weight loss of approximately 11kg over a period of three years. The research did not ask the volunteers to restrict their diets or change their exercise routines.
As per the findings, people who typically slept for less than 6.5 hours a night shed an average of 270 calories from their daily intake when they got an extra 1.2 hours of sleep. The team also found that cutting usage of devices such as mobile phones and laptops before bedtime helped people sleep better and for a longer period.
